The best way to ensure long reliable service from your trailer tires is to always ensure they are 1)operated within their specified weight capacity, 2) within their speed rating and 3) at their required psi pressure noted on the sidewall. Not observing any of the above rules will cause the tire to build up excessive heat, which is the real reason trailer tires will fail. Ply rating is a helpful indicator but the three factors noted above are more important when selecting tires.

A large radial tire such as the ST235/75R17.5 Provider # P35175, for example, offers a high 6005-lb load rating at its specified pressure of 127-psi and can be operated up to 62-mph. For your tandem axle trailer that weighs 17K such tires would provide a substantial safety margin in weight capacity.

Please feel free to tell me your current tire size and Load Range rating, both of which will be noted on the tire sidewall, and I will be glad to offer recommendations in your size.
