Question:

I have a Shorelandr 2-jetski trailer. It currently has no trailer brakes, and I would like to add trailer brakes. The total maximum expected weight of the 2 jetskis, gear, and trailer will not exceed 2000 lbs. The trailer currently has 13inch wheels. What parts would I need to add trailer brakes to it? Thank you!

Since your Shorlandr 2-Jetski Trailer will be used around and most likely backed into water, I recommend going with hydraulic disc brakes because they lack electrical parts.

First, if the axle on your trailer does not already have brake mounting flanges, these must be attached behind the existing hub assembly on each side. Most axles have these, but if it does not, you will need to either replace the axle with one that has brake flanges already welded into place or purchase flanges separately and have them welded to the axle by a qualified welder. I have attached a link that takes you to our selection of brake mounting flanges.

Next you will need to add the disc brake hubs and rotors. The correct system for your trailer will depend on both the axle rating and bolt pattern of your wheels. The Kodiac Disc Brake Kit - 8 inches Rotor/Hub # K2HR2D is for 2,000 pound axles and has a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern. I have attached an article that will help you determine the bolt pattern of your wheels.

You will then need a brake line kit to run brake fluid from your surge brake actuator to the trailer brakes. The kits are selected based on the amount of axles on your trailer. For your single-axle trailer, I recommend the Kodiac Hydraulic Brake Line Kit - 18 inches # 18SI-BLKIT.

The last thing you will need is a hydraulic disc brake actuator. You will just want to make sure to choose one the meets or exceeds your gross trailer weight and matches the size of the hitch ball on your tow vehicle. The Zinc-Plated Brake Actuator # 099-175-20 has a 7,500 pound capacity with a 2 inch ball coupler. This will bolt onto your trailer tongue and has an integrated electric reverse lockout that lets you back up without activating the trailer brakes.
