Recommended Weight Distribution System For 7,600-lb Travel Trailer

Updated 02/24/2017 | Published 02/23/2017

Question:

Hello, I am in process of buying a travel trailer and want to pull it using an equalizer hitch. What size do you recommend? Based on what Ive researched, I believe I should purchase the one rated for 1200 lbs. tongue weight. For info: The trailer unloaded weight is 6577 lb. Max GWR is 7600 lb. Tongue weight is listed as 989 lb. I will pull it with a F150. My understanding is not only should I consider the trailer tongue weight but I should also consider the weight that I may load into the truck behind the rear axle. Is this correct? Is the system rated for 1200 lb too much? Im afraid if I get the 1000 lb. system, I may be too close to the max. limit. Regards,

The best way to determine what system will work for you is to know what your total tongue weight is. The total tongue weight is the tongue weight of your fully-loaded-ready-to-tow trailer added to the weight of any cargo you place behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. You will then want to find a system where your total tongue weight falls near the middle of the tongue weight range for the system. Getting a system that is too small will be useless, but getting a system that is too big will result in a stiff, uncomfortable experience.

Based on the numbers you said, I recommend the 1,200-b system part # EQ37121ET will be a good system for you. The system has a tongue weight capacity between 800 and 1,200 lbs. This system has 4-point sway control that helps when traveling in high winds and large passing trucks.

Since the system does not come with a shank I recommend an adjustable shank like part # EQ90-02-4300. I have also attached a link to a helpful article that explains weight distribution you can check out.
