Question:
I had a 2014 gmc denali with a bandw 5th wheel hitch in it. When i traded for my new 2016 gmc denali, i removed the hitch . Well it turns out the 5th wheel prep package is different. Is there an adapter or do i need to buy a new hitch ?

The factory tow package for most trucks have changed to the puck system for new models like yours. That offers the convenience of not having an aftermarket underbed rail system, but it does make most hitches incompatible. So, there is an adapter, but not an ideal option for your vehicle unless you have a specific pin box on your trailer.
For your B&W hitch, you can get a new base with the puck system for a non-sliding hitch, like what you have, but that is not recommended for the 6-1/2 foot bed unless you use a sidewinder or have a revolution pin box on your trailer. A non-sliding hitch without that change in pivot point will not allow you enough clearance to make turns without a very strong possibility of damaging your truck and/or trailer. If you have the sidewinder or the revolution, then I recommend using the Replacement Base for B&W Companion OEM 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch for Chevy/GMC, # BWRVB3700, with your current hitch head.
If you do not have a sidewinder or revolution pin box, I strongly recommend getting a slider hitch. For your 2016 GMC Sierra 2500 6-1/2 foot bed with factory rail kit, I recommend the Curt A20 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ R20 Slider - Dual Jaw - 20,000 lbs, # C16541, along with the Adapter Rails for Curt 5th Wheel Hitch w/ Slider - Chevy/GMC Towing Prep Package, # C16023. These rails are not universal fit and currently Curt is the only company making sliding hitches compatible with your vehicle. The good news is they are great hitches.
For your bed, you may also want to consider the Hopkins Endurance 5th Wheel/Gooseneck 90-Degree Wiring Harness with 7-Pole Plug, # 41157. This connects to your factory wiring and gives you a 7-way trailer connection in the bed of your truck for easy connection with a 5th wheel trailer. It will keep your bumper 7-way functional and give you that extra connection point.
I've attached a couple videos for your convenience.
