Recommended Replacement Trailer Brake Assemblies For 10 x 2-1/4 Inch Brake Assemblies

I need to replace my 10x 2 1/4inch Dexter trailer brake shoes. How can I tell what weight the axle is rated for? Assuming it is rated for 3.5K I was looking at part code 23-27. Does that kit include shoes? Thank you

There are many ways to find out the axle you have on your trailer. The first way is to check the diameter. A 3500 lb axle has a 2-3/8 inch diameter compared to a 1-3/4 inch diameter on a 2000 lb axle or a 3 inch diameter on a 4400, 5200 or 6000 lb axle. Another way to tell is by the bearing size and the seal. Yet another way to narrow it down is by the brake assembly. When you gave the 10 inch assembly, I can narrow it down to a 3500 lb axle or a 4400 lb axle, but you would need to cross-reference one of the other methods to confirm.
The brake assemblies includes the brake magnet, the shoes, the springs, and the adjuster. It is all moving parts plus the backing plate. For the right hand side, you would want # 23-27. For the left hand side, you want # 23-26. These will trade out your old assembly for new ones.
If you want to upgrade to the self adjusting brake assemblies, the cost is minimal and I recommend the Electric Trailer Brake Assembly - Self-Adjusting - 10" - Right Hand - 3,500 lbs, # AKEBRK-35R-SA and # AKEBRK-35L-SA for the Left Hand Side. These brakes do not require routine adjustment, the brake shoes are always properly aligned. As a result you get optimum performance without having to take the time to continually perform this type of maintenance.
