Question:
I have a 2015 Titan Trailer Coupler Model 10 that seems to lockup when backing on a frequent bases. A couple of times I flipped the light connection backwards and think it shut off the electronic controls to allow for backing. Most times the slightest upward backing sets the brakes and does not allow for backing.

The Titan Model 10 Actuator # T4750820 uses an electric reverse lockout that relies on the signal from the vehicle's reverse light circuit. That signal engages the lockout solenoid that prevents the actuator from compressing (and engaging the brakes) when you back up. If your vehicle's trailer connector has damage to its reverse light signal wire this would cause the brakes to remain engaged.
You can refer to the linked photo of a 7-way vehicle socket to note that the center pin is usually the one that carries the reverse light signal. You can test this pin and the wire leading to it with a tester like # PTW2993 to see if your reverse light signals are making it to the trailer connector and on to the actuator. Check for damage on that reverse circuit wire, such as worn or cracked insulation, and correct as needed.
Another common cause for a problem like this is corrosion on the contacts on the vehicle socket or on the trailer plug. Check for any signs of discoloration, even slight greenish or whitish film on the contacts, that could be interfering with the signal.
You can also test the lockout manually by applying 12V power to the trailer connector (on that same center pin) to see if this engages the lockout. If it does then you know the issue is on the vehicle side. If the lockout solenoid is bad we offer replacement # T4748800.
