According to my contact at Tekonsha, the # 3040-P is the correct brake controller wiring harness for a 2005 Toyota Tacoma IF the vehicle is equipped with the factory 7-way trailer connector. The # 3040-P is compatible with all Tekonsha brake controllers that have either the socket in the rear of the controller for the harness or those that have the wires that extend from the rear of the controller that terminate in a connector.
If your Tacoma doesn't nave a factory installed 7-way, then it isn't prewired for a brake controller and you'd need to use our Brake Controller Installation Kit # ETBC7 to install the controller. The kit includes everything needed to install the controller, including the adapter that will convert an existing 4-pole trailer connector to a 7-way. If your truck doesn't have a functional 4-pole, you can install one using part # 118496.
I've linked you to some installation videos that deal with either scenario, one using the 3040-P and the other using the ETBC7 Kit. I've also linked to the instructions for the ETBC7 Kit and an install video for the 118496 if needed.
