Recommended Trailer Hitch And Bike Carrier For Forest River R Pod

Question:

We have a 2015 Toyota FJ Cruiser and just bought a Forest River r pod 179. We need to carry two bikes with the camper and then still get the bikes to the trail after arriving at campsite. Any suggestions?

Expert Reply:

I recommend first installing a trailer hitch on the back of your Rpod, and then a hitch mounted bike carrier.

The trailer hitch I recommend is the Curt Adjustable Width Trailer Hitch, part # 13703. This will work with RVs that have a frame width between 22 and 72 inches. The hitch can be bolted on or welded on.

The bike carrier I recommend is the Let's Go Aero VeeMe V2 2-Bike Rack, part # VME-V2. This rack is RV rated and has a weight capacity of 50-lbs per bike. This rack weight just 12-1/2 lbs.

Question:

We are concerned about weight on the back of the r pod and thought a tongue mounted rack that holds a bicycle rack would be good. Then switch the bicycle rack to FJ to get to trail. Any thoughts on that idea?

Expert Reply:

If your ball mount is long enough you may be interested in one of the bike racks like the Advantage SportsRack V-Rack 2 Bike Rack, part # HE1011.

Another option you may be able to work with is the Stromberg Carlson Bike Bunk Trailer, part # CC-275. This clamps to the A-frame on the front of your R-pod.

For a bike rack you may be interested in a rack like the Rola TX-102, part # 59400. I have attached a link to the hitch mounted hanging bikes we offer you can check out.
