Recommendations for Preventing Exhaust From Melting Tarp Covering Cargo in Cargo Carrier

Question:
Hello, I have a Hitch Hauler with a tarp covering the Cargo. The heat from the exhaust melted the tarp not sure if this is because of the melting point of the tarp are I need to extend and or raise my hitch haul. I have a factory installed hitch on a GMC Terrain hitch says 3500 lbs tow weight. Which puts it in the Class II range. So it has a tongue weight of about 300 to 350. That puts a straight shank that fits a 1.25inch receiver directly in line with the exhaust. The shank does have a 2inch adapter My question could I either extend, raise and extend, some type of exhaust deflection panels on the hitch hauler. I am trying NOT to cut the 300 to 350 lbs capacity by 50

Exhaust melting cargo on a cargo carrier isn't a super common problem, but we are aware that it does happen on occasion. Especially if the cargo carrier is at the same height as the exhaust, relatively close to it, and/or the material in the carrier is susceptible to melting.
Other factors to consider are the size of the engine, climate, and road conditions. Engines are basically big air pumps. The bigger the motor the more hot air is pumped out of it. Hotter climates will also allow things to get to a melting temperature easier. Steep hills will cause the engine to work harder and create hotter exhaust as well.
To prevent from having to use an adapter that can reduce your weight capacity by 50 percent, I recommend a turn down for the exhaust. I attached a link to a page that has all of the ones we carry. You will want to measure your current tailpipe to ensure you pick out the correct fitting one.
