Question:
Im looking at installing an aux. trans. cooler on a 2010 GMC Canyon. I know that you install the cooler on the return side for heat displacement. My issue is when operating the vehicle in sub-zero temps like what we get in Michigan. Although cooling down the trans is great in summer if it cant get to operating temps in winter I imaging thats an issue too for shift points to be met. I have 3.7L with I think a 4L60 trans. I have a 6000 lb towing pkg, based on 3:73 axles and 4 WD. I tow a Flagstaff HW around 3000 lbs.

Not a problem! What you can do is when you install the transmission cooler # D13503 in your 2010 GMC Canyon you can also install a fluid control thermostat # D25791. The path of the fluid will go from the transmission, through the thermostat, through the factory cooler, then through the aftermarket cooler, back through the thermostat, and back to the transmission.
The thermostat will not allow fluid to go to the coolers until it warms up to over 180 degrees.
For the transmission cooler fitting # D13035 is recommended to avoid having to cut and flare lines.
