How is Length of 7-Way Connector Lead Determined for Wiring Up Trailer
Updated 09/15/2015 | Published 09/14/2015 >
Question:
Is there a rule of thumb on what length to allow when cutting your Hopkins Wiring H20046, 8 foot 7 pin molded connector. Obviously one would hitch up the trailer , run it to both the female port of the tow vehicle and to the trailers female connector port. then turn like your would jackknife and get the maximum distance. Does it just sag between the 2 ports or do you run it along the tongue ball coupler for some support? Seems like just sagging would invite pop out from one of the ports.

The method you described would be a great way to determine what length to cut the # H20046. That way you would end up with enough wire that it wouldn't come unplugged when making a tight turn. Securing the wire up and out of the way is a smart option as well so that the weight of the cable would not want to pull it out of the connector and so that it doesn't get caught on anything.
