Do Axle U-Bolt Nuts Require Welding
Published 05/06/2015 >
Question:
Im about to begin installing the replacement springs on my tandem axle trailer, and noticed that the nuts on the axle u-bolts have been spot welded on. Cutting them off is no problem, but since this trailer was built by a reputable manufacturer, Im confused by the spot welding. As a long time hot rodder, Ive never seen that done or heard of it ever being done. I thought that the nuts would not back off and if by chance you were worried about it, just put some Permatex #1 on the threads for good measure. In your opinion, should I spot weld those nuts once I get it installed? I think its a dumb idea but want to check with an expert. Thanks.

Expert Reply:
Spot welding the axle nuts on a trailer would be overkill. Most u-bolt nuts are just fine with the nyloc nuts that are used on them, or you could use Loc Tite like part # LT37643.
