I spoke with my contact at Roadmaster and he said in order to avoid damage to the transmission you must disconnect the drive shaft or install a lube pump on you 1992 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4x4 when towing with the RoadMaster Tow Dolly with Electric Brakes, part # RM-2050-1.

You can also flat tow your Jeep Cherokee. If you would like to go with this option you will need Roadmaster XL Base Plate Kit # 1418-1. I attached installation instructions for this product for you to check out.

When flat towing a vehicle, there are 5 main components that are needed including the base plate kit I already recommended.

When choosing a tow bar, you will need one that is compatible with EZ base plates. I recommend the Roadmaster Stowmaster Tow Bar, # RM-501. I have included a link to the installation details and a link to a video review for you to view.

You will also need safety cables. I recommend Roadmaster Safety Cables, # RM-643. These are coiled so they will not drag on the ground.

The next component you will need to flat tow your vehicle is lighting. There are several lighting methods depending on your needs and how often you will be towing the vehicle. I recommend # RM-2120. It is the easiest to set up and you wont have to tap into your towed vehicle's electrical system. I have included a link to our series of FAQ articles on flat towing, some of which cover choosing the best lighting for your needs.

And finally, most states now require a supplemental braking system on the vehicle being towed. The easiest to install and use is the Roadmaster Even Brake Portable Proportional Braking System, # RM-9400. This unit activates the brakes on the vehicle being towed in proportion to how much the RV is braking. This is the safest type of braking action and it reduces wear and tear on the RV and towed vehicle brakes.

You will also want to check the vehicle owners manual for additional information on flat towing the vehicle.
