How to Test If Redarc Liberty Brake Controller Is Working

Updated 02/03/2026 | Published 07/22/2024

Question:

Questions about the redarc liberty controller. Havent tried it with the camper yet. When I step on the brake pedal the light wont come on. If I push the knob, the light comes on blue, then fades out. Is this normal? Also, when I use a tester at the rear of the truck the brake power light doesnt light up.

Hey Larry.

The Redarc Liberty # RED24FR Won't light up with the brake pedal if no trailer is hooked up, or if you are sitting still. It's a proportional controller so it needs to detect movement. You really need to hook up your camper to verify everything is working right.

Hey Larry, did you get a chance to hook up your camper and see if the Redarc Liberty controller worked as expected once you were moving? Your update could make it easier for others testing their setup for the first time.

@SamuelC I installed it, and tested it one time. It seemed to have to put it on max to slow the rig. Could be the wiring. I will have to look at it in the spring.

@Larry That's odd. Have you had the trailer since new? If its a brand new trailer, or you recently put new brakes on and didn't break them in, then that would be to be expected. They don't perform well unless you break them in, and the manufacturer does not do this when building the trailer. If they're older brakes that aren't self-adjust, make sure the shoes are adjusted correctly, they need to be adjusted every year.
