Can you give me the dimension inside the u shape section?... the distance between the two holes. if that makes sense.

Yes the inside with of the CE Smith Light Duty, Vertical Bunk Bracket # CE10605G is 1-3/4 inches. It is designed for 2x4 boards or 2x6 boards. A 2x4 or 2x6 does not actually have a 2 inch width. It is 1-3/4 inches. So I am not sure why they even call them 2x4s or 6s.
