First you will want a new 6-way like the Hopkins 6-Way Molded Connector, # H20036. Installing the 6-way plug will be made easier by using a junction box such as # 38656. This box mounts to the trailer frame and serves as a connection point between the trailer's original wiring and the new 6-way. Also you will want some Deka jacketed 2 wire, 10 gauge, brake wire # 10-2-1 to run the brake output circuit from the junction box to the brake assemblies as well as some Deka 16-gauge bonded 4-wire cable, part # 16-4B-1. You will need to put ring terminals on all wires; you can use an item like # 44-5356A or a complete wiring kit such as # HM51020. I have included a video which shows how to install the junction box.
There are two different ways to wire a 6-way trailer connector and the main difference is the location of the brake control wire and the 12 volt power wire. I have attached a photo that shows how you should wire your 6-way socket to make it compatible with the Hopkins 6-way trailer connector.
I have also attached an article on trailer wiring that you should find helpful.
