Greasing or Oiling the Slide Rail and Rollers on the Curt Q5 Fifth Wheel Trailer Hitch with Roller

Updated 03/31/2010 | Published 03/29/2010

Question:

It seems that my Q5 slider is very difficult to start and finish sliding. I would think that it should slide back and forth rather freely, but doesnt. Does this require oil or lubricant for this part of the hitch.

The first thing you should do is check that the head assembly is still square in the slider support frame. Loosen the bolts holding the head to the support frame with the slider locked in towing position and re-torque the bolts to the manufacturers specifications. This will square the head up and allow it to slide more easily.

If the slider is very hard to slide Curt recommends application of a silicone spray lubricant or a graphite spray lubricant to the guide rods to facilitate easier movement. Grease and oil are not recommended because it will attract road grime and will impede the movement of the head eventually.

The fifth-wheel should slide fairly easily but is not designed to be moved by hand. The hitch should be secured to the trailer and then the slide can be moved to the towing or maneuvering position by unlocking the slide and moving the vehicle. The slide will lock automatically once it is moved fully into position.
