Snow Tires Chains for a 2013 Highlander AWD When Towing a Tent Trailer

Published 01/13/2015

Question:

I have heard that highlanders have a FWD Bias and thus chains should be installed on the Front drive wheels when necessary, we live in california and I have a tent trailer we tow to go camping. Do I install these chains in the Rear when towing or leave in Front?

Be sure to consult the vehicle owners manual for any restrictions regarding the use of tire chains on your 2013 Toyota Highlander as well as reducing driving speeds are a must.

The basic rule is that snow tire chains should always go on the drive wheels. So with a FWD vehicle place the snow tire chains # PW1046 you referenced on the front tires. On an AWD you will install the snow tire chains on the front wheels but getting 2 sets for all the wheels will add steering and braking benefits. With that being said, when you are towing I would install the tire chains on the front tires.

It's always good to use rubber adjuster like # PW99 because they make it easy to fit and tighten the Glacier snow chains # PW1046.

If you let me know your exact tire size on your 2013 Toyota Highlander, I would be more than happy to recommend additional snow chains too. I did include a link showing the most common Toyota Highlander tire sizes. The most common tire sizes are 245/55-19 and 245/65-17.

Also note that being in California, it is required to be equipped with tire traction devices when entering a signed restricted area.

I have included a couple FAQ's and installation videos for you too.
