Looks like a good heavy winch.
Want to
use it to make a winch jack.

Good product made in America.

by:

I haven't installed it yet but, it looks like a good product. The gentleman I spoke with also was great.

by:

Great service/great price

!

by:

Very well made in the USA, heavy steel, smooth action. The only improvement I would make is an attachment on the spool for a cable.

by:

Justm arrived, I haven't used it yet, but I'm sure it will be fine. Dealing with etrailer is always a pleasure.

by:

Excellent product and delivery time was very good. I have ordered many items from E-Trailer and they have all arived in a good time and are as depicted. I have confidence in my business with them:)

by:

Once winch is mounted and we have a chance to use this we will leave a review of the product.

Staff= professional and knowledgeable.

Excellent shipping.

by:

I bought the winch to replace one with a hand crank and a much less forgiving gear ratio. I was able to operate this one with my cordless drill and a socket. Works great.

by:

I ended up purchasing two of these Dutton's. I have a smaller Alumucraft Boat so I used these two winches to raise my boat out of the water at my dock. It was by far cheaper than a sling lift kit. Unfortunately I have very shallow water at winter pool and this worked perfect to get the boat up out of the water. Great Service, Great Product, easy to use, what else can I say.

by:

To start with the winch is missing the nut for the handle. It was shipped in the original box and was beat up pretty bad. Also was promised on 13th from your sales person. No to happy at the moment.

by:

I used this winch to move some large machinery. It worked very well and securely managed the loads. The hand crank is easy to turn, but it takes a lot of turns to move the load a significant distance. I ended up removing the handle and driving the gear with a cordless drill to speed it up. If I were to buy this again, I would get the one designed to be used with a hand drill. The cable is a bit hard to tie on to the spool since it is not easy to flex a 1/4-inch cable to a tight radius. Eventually I got it on though, and am pleased with the result. etrailer was quick with shipment, so I'm pleased with their service.

by:

I did some research on finding the right winch for use in our garage. While some were cheaper I was afraid of the reviews that said they were flimsy. This winch did not disappoint. It is solid, installs easily, and lifts loads as advertised.

Kudos to etrailer on the delivery ... I picked standard delivery and they upgraded my shipping. Not sure why ... but is showed up 2 days later. Thanks!

by:

I used this winch as a surface mount alternative to your typical winch on a post for pulling a Sea-Doo onto a hinged dock lift. The product has held up well. Due to the 40:1 gear ratio, I ended up using a battery operated drill to turn the worm gear instead of the hand crank. Works well.

by:

I purchased this winch to use for a boom crane on my 4'x8' trailer. The original was not worm drive and would unwind dangerously sometimes while lifting a heavy load. This doesn't do that. However the unit was too wide so I had to reduce the width of the drum and frame by 1 1/2". I am stating at this time I release etrailer from any liability if the unit fails.

by:

Great product -well built - decent price. Now taking the top off my Jeep is a 1 man 10 minute job , way better than other units that I looked at that cost more. Excellent work on E-Trailers end also

by:

I BUILT A LIFT IN MY GARAGE FOR MY JEEP HARD TOP WITH THOSE WINCH IT WORKS AWESOME AND IS THE STRONGEST PART OF THE WHOLE THING.

by:

We used this winch to create a hoist for my roof top box in a way that I can put it on and remove it from my car by myself. It's definitely overkill for the weight of that box, but it works perfectly and the cost was reasonable.

by:

Installation of DL winch. Worm gear necessary due to tight fit behind fairing. Also junction box done right. Not everyone carries these items. I found etrailer through an Internet search for the junction box.

  • Using Worm Gear Winch Versus Brake Winch for Hoisting Small Dinghy
If you are wanting to use a drill to ease operation of the winch, the Dutton-Lainson # DL11011 would be a much better choice. This winch is specifically designed so that the handle is easily removable for use with a drill. Using the shaft directly connected to the drill chuck is not recommended, but the input shaft has a hexagonal cross-section, that can be used with a 5/8 inch socket or driver attached to a drill. Keep in mind that the 1500 lb capacity for the jack is based on having...

  • Brake Winch Recommendation that Does not Make Ratcheting Sound
The only brake winch style that would not make the ratcheting sound you are referring to is a worm gear winch. For a similarly rated winch to the # DL14934 that you referenced you would want the Dutton-Lainson Worm Gear Hand Winch # DL10950. I attached a review video for this winch plus an FAQ on winches for you to check out.

  • What Is Your Smallest Size Worm Gear Winch?
The Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch # DL10950 you found is our smallest worm drive winch as we mostly deal with heavier components. You will likely need to visit a sporting goods supply store for one that will work on a volley ball system.

  • Recommended Dutton-Lainson Hand Crank with Loop Drive
There unfortunately not a loop drive attachment for the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch # DL10950. You'd instead need to use the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch # DL10956 which has the same 1,500 lb capacity, a worm gear, and a loop drive which will let you use a Shepard hook or power drill.

  • Recommended Winch for Raising and Lowering a Draw Bridge
I have attached the review video of the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch part # DL10950 to this answer page for you. The video can be found in the middle of the page under the "Featured Help Information" heading. As mentioned, the above worm gear winch does not have freewheel feature therefore so long as you are under the 1,500 lb weight capacity it will work perfectly for you. If you don't already have a cable I recommend using the Hand Winch Cable with Safety Hook part # DL24100.

  • Recommended Hand Winch for Lifting Kayak to Ceiling
We do have some brake winches that have no minimum load requirements, but they won't have enough spool capacity for 50 feet of 1/4 inch rope. I do have a worm gear winch that would work for you, part # DL11001. The winch has a 49 foot drum capacity for cable up to 9/32 of an inch. Since that's a tad larger than a 1/4 inch, your 50 feet of rope would fit. In lieu of the handle, you could use a heavy duty variable speed drill with a 5/8 inch socket. This would make raising an lowering the...

  • Hand Winch Recommendation for Raising and Lowering a Draw Bridge
The Dutton Lainson Worm Gear Winch part # DL10950 that you referenced would do an excellent job. This is the only style of hand winch we offer that is safe to use to suspend items in the air. This winch also does not have a free wheel option, so under no circumstances would it ever come crashing down. I attached a review video for this product for you to check out as well.

  • How Does Worm Gear Winch Brake Work
There are a few ways brake winches operate but the worm gear winches like the part # DL10950 that you referenced have the most effective brake since the handle turns a worm gear which rides on a sprocket that is attached to the drum. Basically if the handle isn't moving there's no way for the drum turn. This is the simplest and most effective brake for a winch.

  • Winch Recommendations for Lifting Canoes and Kayaks to Storage Position
For lifting and storing your canoes and kayaks, you will want to use either a worm gear or a brake winch. Worm gear and Brake winches, see links, prevent runaway loads, and do not have a free spool mode. The pulling winch you selected would not be the best choice for your application, because it could potentially release the load if not operated safely. I would recommend a worm gear winch for ease of operation. The Dutton-Lainson Worm Gear Hand Winch, # DL10950, or # DL10954, would be...

For a winch that uses a 3/16" cable we have the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch - Worm Gear - 1,500 lbs # DL10950 but the drum on that winch can only hold 81 ft of cable.

  • Recommended Hand Winch for Light Loads
The best option we can offer for light loads is a worm gear winch since there are no minimum load requirements. For this, I recommend the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch part # DL10950 and Hand Winch Cable with Safety Hook part # DL24100. The load will be held in place whenever the handle is released.

  • Recommended Brake Winch for Use on Ramped Utility Trailer for Loading 3000-lb Tractor
The best type of winch for your application is a brake winch, which automatically stops the drum's rotation when you stop cranking. This will be the safest type for your trailer and also will be easier to crank. A wheeled vehicle like a car or tractor is considered a rolling load in the winch world and this places less stress on the winch than a non-wheeled item. The degree of incline on your ramps has an effect on winch capacity. On level ground a winch can pull a rolling load 10 times...

  • Does the Dutton Lainson Worm Gear Winch Crank In and Out
The Dutton-Lainson Worm Gear Hand Winch # DL10950 that you referenced cranks one way to to reel in the cable and the other way to let it out. To deal with the high angle your cable comes in at you could angle how you mount the # DL10950 so that the handle clears. You might have to come up with a custom mount for the winch so that everything clears.

  • Recommended Hand Winch for Hoisting 110 Lb Chandelier
To raise and lower a chandelier, I would recommend using an automatic brake winch like the Pro Series # PSKR10000301. The winch has a 1000 lb capacity, which would be plenty for a 110 lb chandelier. The drum of the winch can store up to 50 feet of 7/32 inch cable, which is sold separately as part # FWC7500100. A worm gear winch like the Dutton-Lainson # DL10950 would also work, but due to its 30:1 gear ratio, you would be cranking forever.
