Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

  • What Tire Pressure Is Recommended On 4.80/4.00-8 Load Range C Trailer Tire For Highway Speeds
The tires should be inflated to 90 psi on the highway as well as other roads, regardless of load size. The problem is that under inflating a trailer tire will lead to degradation of the tire. On trailer tires, the side walls are thicker than on car tires so they can handle more vertical load. An under inflated tire side wall will heat up more often and quicker and will lead to early wear and possible failure of the tire. The best thing to do is to follow the rating on the tires and inflate...

  • What is the Difference Between Load Range B and C Trailer Tires
Load range B trailer tires are going to have a lower capacity than C load range tires. Basically that, psi rating, and the ply rating are the only differences. A higher load range tire would last a little longer than lower load ranges of the same size but it will not increase the capacity of the trailer. If you go with tire # AM10004 it is rated for 745 pounds at 90 psi. And tire # AM10002 is rated for 590 pounds at 60 psi. Both tires will fit 8 inch x 3-3/4 inch wheels. I have included...

  • How to Decipher Trailer Tire Size Numebers
The size 400/480 and 4.00/4.80are the same tire size. The 400/4.00 designation referrers to an older tire size that is no longer available and the 480/4.80 size will replace the older model sized. Therefore, a tire like the Kenda Bias Trailer Tire, # AM10004, will fit both 4.00 and 4.80 size tires. On your current tires, the 4.80 number represents the section width of the tire, or the width across the tread. The second number is the wheel diameter size. You have a wheel that has a 8...

  • Availability of Tires That Fit 8" x 3-3/4" Wheels
We do have tires that will fit the Steel Trailer Wheel - 8" x 3-3/4" Rim - 4 on 4 - White # AM20001. You can use either a 4.80/4.00-8 tire or 5.70-8 tire. If you're replacing tires on your trailer I recommend choosing one that matches the size of your current tire. The Kenda K353 Bias Trailer Tire - 5.70-8 # AM10013 and the Kenda K371 Bias Trailer Tire - 4.80/4.00-8 - Load Range C # AM10004 will both work with this wheel. The # AM10013 is a load range D tire with a maximum capacity of...

  • What is the Difference Between 4.80/4.00-8 and 5.70-8 Trailer Tires for a Boat Trailer
Both the 4.80/4.00-8 and 5.70-8 tires sizes will fit the same wheel size, 8 x 3-3/4 inch. The 5.70 is taller by 2 inches and wider by 1.2 inches. If you have more than 1 inch of space between the tire and a fender and more than 1.2 inches between the side of the tire and the trailer then you can use the larger size such as # AM10010 rated for 715 pounds at 50 psi. If you do not have the space then stick with the same size you have, 4.80/4.00-8 using # AM10002 rated for 590 pounds at 60...

  • Lug Nut Torque Rating for a 5-Lug Trailer Wheel
The correct torque for installing lug nuts on your 5 X 8 trailer's 5-lug wheels will depend on the size of the lugs. For a 1/2-inch lug the torque spec ranges from 75- to 85-ft-lbs. For a 9/16-inch lug the torque spec ranges from 135- to 145-ft-lbs. Please refer to the linked chart. You will want to avoid using an impact wrench or any other tool that cannot provide measured force. Use a torque wrench for accurate results. You should re-torque them at 10 miles, 25 miles, and 50 miles, and...

  • Recommended Replacement 4.80/4.00-8 Boat Trailer Tires
Generally speaking, a radial tire is going to have a few improved differences when compared to a bias tire like what you currently have on your trailer. A radial tire will flex more than a bias tire, giving it better ground contact, traction and stability. They will also run a bit cooler, especially when the tire is under a heavy load. One advantage a bias tire does have over a radial is a stiffer sidewall, a feature that is useful for off road applications. The 4.80/4.00-8 trailer tires...

  • Tires With Higher Speed Rating for Motorcycle Trailer With 4.80/4.00-8 Tires
Hi Hector; to get that higher speed rating you will need to move up to a 12" tire. The only potential issue is the loss of clearance when compared to your current tires. If you have a 4 on 4 bolt pattern you can use the # AM35351DX and for 5 on 4-1/2 the # AM31199DX. This tire has a speed rating of M for 81 mph. Compared to a tire like the # AM10004 you looked at the diameter will be 5.2" larger and the width will be 1" wider. This means you will lose 2.6" of clearance on top and 0.5"...

  • Will Smaller Tire Fit In Place of 4.80/4.00-8 Tire
A smaller 3.5-8 tire will not be able to fit in place of a 4.80/4.00-8 tire such as the Kenda Loadstar K371 Bias Trailer Tire - 4.80/4.00-8 - Load Range B # AM10002 (590 lb capacity) or Load Range C # AM10004 (745 lb capacity). The reason is the smaller section width, because 4.80/4.00-8 tires fit 8" x 3-3/4" rims such as Steel Trailer Wheel # AM20008 (Galvanized) or # AM20006 (White) and a 3.5-8 tire is not wide enough to fit. I have added links to video reviews of each of the tires...

  • Replacement 4.8/4.00-8 Tire Recommendation for Small Sailboat Trailer
Hey Patrick, thanks for reaching out! I recommend picking up the Kenda K371 Bias Trailer Tire # AM10004 and using the Americana High Pressure Rubber Snap-In Valve Stem # AM20907 for your wheels. This tire has a 65 mph speed rating and can be inflated up to 90 psi which is why you'll need the high pressure valve stem. As for the bearings, we have the # L44649, but we don't have the LM11749. To replace the seals and dust caps though I'll need you to take some measurements of the seals (inner...

  • Looking For 4.80/4.00-8 Tires And Wheels For A Towable Log Splitter
Hello Kris. We do offer some of the 4.8-8 tires with wheels. Everything we have uses the 4 on 4 or 5 on 4-1/2" bolt patterns which are standard for trailers. It sounds like your log splitter uses a different kind of wheel though, and we do not offer anything in an 8" other than the sizes we mentioned above. We can provide just the tires, like the Kenda K371 Bias Trailer Tire # AM10004, but I am afraid we do not have a wheel for you. I feel like your best bet for that will be to contact...

You are correct and I do have a tire for you. However, you don't want to use the Kenda Loadstar K371 Bias Trailer Tire - 4.80/4.00-8 item # AM10002 on the highway at 70 mph. Instead you will want the Kenda K371 Bias Trailer Tire - 4.80/4.00-8 - Load Range C item # AM10004. This tire is the same size but is a Load Range C tire. It is rated to be used on the highway but has a maximum speed of 65 mph when inflated to 90 PSI. This is our highest rated 4.80/4.00-8 tire. For a great tire and...

  • Larger Wheel and Tire Options To Improve Highway Speed Rating For Harbor Freight Trailer 4.8-8 Tires
The 4.8-8 tires on your Harbor Freight trailer are most likely like the Kenda # AM10004 tires with a 55mph speed rating. We do have the Kenda 4.80-12" # AM30540 tires which have a higher speed rating of 65mph. Do note the tires are much taller at 20.5" in diameter versus only 16" which you have now so you will have to modify the fenders to make everything fit. • Compatible 4.80 X 8 Trailer Tire That Can Handle Highway Speeds
For that size tire, 4.80 X 8, I recommend the Kenda tire, # AM10004. This tire has the Load C rating and fits the 8 inch x 3-3/4 inch rim. Using the heavier load range could extend the life of this tire. The Kenda tire is a bias tire that tend to run hotter than radial tires. The killer of all tires especially trailer tires is heat. Unfortunately, there are no radial tires in the 4.80 X 8 tire size. However, bias tires will usually have a stronger sidewall so they can handle more road...

  • What Hub Do I Need For A Trailer With 4.80-4.00-8 Tires
I can certainly point you in the right direction. Most 4.80-4.00-8 tires will use a hub with a 4 on 4, or 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern. Since your trailer is fairly small, I suspect it would be a 4 lug hub. Next we just need to confirm your trailers spindle/bearing sizes. Most smaller trailers like yours use a # L44643 (1" inner diameter) bearing or a # L44649 (1.063" inner diameter) bearing. You will simply need to pull one of the current hubs and confirm the bearing size. You can do this...

  • What are the Torque Ratings for the Lug Nuts on a 4.80-8 Trailer Tire and Wheel
You likely have 1/2 inch lug nuts on your trailer. For 1/2 inch lug nuts tighten them down to 75 to 85 foot pounds. If you have a different size let me know what it is and I can determine the appropriate torque specifications for you.

  • Can a 8 inch Trailer Rim and Tire get Replaced by a 10 inch Rim and Tire
When going to a larger trailer tire size the biggest concern will be that you have enough clearance above the tire for additional height. The height difference between the two sizes you have would be a little over 2 inches so you would have 1 inch less of clearance above the tire with the larger 10 inch rim. From the pictures you submitted I can see you have a 5 bolt pattern which would indicate that you have a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern so a rim and tire like part # AM3H490 would...

  • Torque Spec for 1/2-20 Lug Nuts on 14 Inch Aluminum Boat Trailer Wheels
For the 1/2 inch lug nut # 12CLN-L and the 14 inch aluminum wheels you will torque each lug nut to 75 to 85 foot pounds. No lubricant is required. However, since this is on a boat trailer and the hub studs are likely raw steel a little lube would help keep corrosion at bay. There isn't a specific product I would recommend since they all do about the same job. If you need a torque wrench we have # ALL944001 which is a basic torque wrench rated from 10 up to 150 foot pounds.

Yes, you can upgrade from 4.80-8 tires to 4.80-12 tires. The width of the tire and the bolt pattern will be the same so it can work. We don't have any load range D options in that combo. I recommend using the Kenda 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" White Wheel - 4 on 4 - Load Range C # AM30620. The clearances at the fenders are the biggest issue with an upgrade in size like this. The weight of your trailer does have an impact as well because the tire rating does sometimes cause...

The highest rated tire and wheel combo in this size with a 4 on 4 bolt pattern is # AM30040, also at 760 pounds at 90 psi.
