Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Very happy with etrailer. Pricing was great and free shipping! My wheels/tires arrived very well packed and in good condition. Product met all expectations for what I needed on my small boat trailer. I actually was able to purchase a better quality tire for less money than the big online site where I usually do most of my online shopping. I will purchase from this site again.

1 year later review. After a year's travel on my racing sailboat trailer, the Kenda 4.80/4.00-8 tires and rims are performing to expectations. I live on the Texas Gulf coast, so I need galvanized rims. These are performing well. No rusting thru, no corrosion, no flaking. The tires are also performing very well. I frequently travel to racing venues well over 1000 miles away - Iowa, Kansas, N. Dakota, Oklahoma, Florida, Mississippi, Louissiana, and all over Texas. The tires show very little wear, ride smooth, and track well. FYI, I make a habit of taking every trailer tire - even these tiny 4.80/4.00-8 size - to be balanced at a tire shop before they ever touch the road. My local guy only charges $5 a tire, and to me, it is money well spent.

It's a tire and wheel. Exactly as advertised and extremely efficient service. Delivered to NJ is 2 days. Boat trailer is rolling again

Service and delivery was exceptional. I was very surprised that my order showed up yesterday. 2 day delivery is excellent service.

by:

Purchased in January, with Covid-19, etc. didn't mount them on my boat trailer until April and in July took my first long trip. Trailer performed perfectly with the new tires/rims. Rims are of high quality galvanized steel. Lking forward to great service and long life.

- AM30050
by:

Be informed, the pilot hole is not 2.5" as described in both the written description and the video. It is more like 2 13/16". Even though I have bolts and not lug nuts the wheel worked out for me (I did not return it). I informed customer service and they confirmed the measurement but, as of the time I wrote this review the description has not been changed. Otherwise, it is a great product for the price. Overall service, delivery time, and assistance with the pilot hole issue was great. I only rated 4 stars instead of 5 because the description was wrong.

- AM30050
by:

We've now ordered multiple times. Why? We can get the same tire on galvanized rims for less money than with painted rims locally. We launch boats into salt water, and the rims get in the water a bit. Further, the roads in winter get calcium chloride and salt-- so galvanized rims last much longer there, too. etrailer makes it all easy and I got great help on the phone.

- AM30050

Great tires, good price and the delivery was on time.

What I needed,Thanks Fast Shipping.

by:

Well….thanks for asking. I actually bought two tires, and they’ve held up well, but I had to take one of them to have the tire remounted on the wheel, as it had gotten unseated and wouldn’t hold air. Other than that, they’ve been fine.

- AM30050
by:

The wheels arrived in good condition and in a timely manner. I unboxed them and put them on and they bolted right up and they look terrific. They look so nice I painted the trailer to match. Looks like a new one now . What a Deal!

- AM30050
by:

I recently ordered new galvanized wheels with tires for my small boat trailer. They arrived in four days, fit perfectly and were one third the cost compared to a local marine supply dealer. Also, the tires were a better load rating than my old ones. Excellent service as always.

- AM30050
by:

These wheels replaced non-galvanized rims and are expected to provide even more reliable service at no extra cost- C range tires included. Thank you Etrailer.

The # AM30050 Kenda 4.80/4.00-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" Galvanized Wheel has a wheel capacity of 910lbs. The tire capacity has a maximum load of 745 lbs at 90 psi as you stated. You are correct in assuming that this can only carry 745 lbs, but that is just for the individual tire. Since you would have at least 2 on your trailer, the pair would be capable of holding 1,490 lbs since the weight of the trailer will be distributed between the two tires. • Can Camper Trailer Weight Capacity Be Increased By Changing Tire Load Range Rating
Thank you for the photo of your camper trailer. When it comes to a trailer's weight carrying capacity the lowest-rated part of the trailer - either the frame, axle, hubs, wheels or tires - will determine if more capacity can be added. If the tires were the lowest-rated component then changing them to another size or simply to a higher load range in the same size could give you more capacity/safety margin. But if the tires are not the "weakest link" then upgrading them does not add capacity...
