Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Dependable rims and tires! Great purchase! Thanks!

by:

Real, honest-to-goodness Load Range C, as advertised. Steel wheel was made in South Korea and seems to have a very generous galvanizing coating. We'll see how it holds up over the years, but it looks good so far! Rapid delivery, which was free, also appreciated.

These wheels/tires will go on my 35-year old 4x8 utility trailer which gets a lot of use.

by:

Great tire and rims. Never had to add air no rust and no weather cracks and price was right. sales person was great on rushing me a third one for my spare. Thank you

by:

Purchased as a spare for a light boat trailer. Arrived in good condition. I have not needed to use it yet.

by:

Very happy with etrailer. Pricing was great and free shipping! My wheels/tires arrived very well packed and in good condition. Product met all expectations for what I needed on my small boat trailer. I actually was able to purchase a better quality tire for less money than the big online site where I usually do most of my online shopping. I will purchase from this site again.

by:

by:

I just received my new tires and rims for my boat trailer.
Everything went seamless. From the ordering process to the delivery!
Great value and excellent service!
Thank you very much!!

by:

Bought this for a spare for my trailer. It will be fine as a spare.

by:

I got a FREE boat, motor and trailer from my son-in-law. After cleaning years of grime and junk off of them, the boat and motor were in good shape but the trailer needed lots of work. I scraped it and painted it but the wheels and tires were too rusty and weather checked to be safe. I ordered three galvanized wheels with Kenda 4.80/4.00-8 tires mounted on them from etrailer.com. They look great and really dress up the whole rig. Shipping was lightning fast and the price was great! I will be ordering from them again in the future!

Still looking and working perfectly!

by:

Service, product information and delivery were all first class. Staff was eager to please and answered technical questions about the product knowledgeably. I especially liked the packaging for the wheels, with hand-holes to carry the box easily. Very good price and free delivery too. Will order again from etrailer!

by:

Another perfect transaction with etrailer. Looked at etrailer site and supporting information, ordered trailer tires and wheels, they arrived, and we put them on with ease. Everything was easy and correct.

1 year later review.

After a year's
travel on my racing sailboat trailer, the Kenda 4.80/4.00-8 tires and rims are performing to expectations.
I live on the Texas Gulf coast, so I need galvanized rims. These are performing well. No rusting thru, no corrosion, no flaking.
The tires are also performing very well. I frequently travel to racing venues well over 1000 miles away - Iowa, Kansas, N. Dakota, Oklahoma, Florida, Mississippi, Louissiana, and all over Texas. The tires show very little wear, ride smooth, and track well.
FYI, I make a habit of taking every trailer tire - even these tiny 4.80/4.00-8 size - to be balanced at a tire shop before they ever touch the road. My local guy only charges $5 a tire, and to me, it is money well spent.

by:

A year later these tires and wheels are still holding up great. I have them on a small boat trailer and they handle the freeway and windy bumpy back-roads equally well. Would buy again.

by:

Great product and serice! Thank you.

by:

Really pleased with tires and wheels. In the middle of moving to our retirement home... One little trailer full at a time. It's about a 700 mile round trip, and I have well over 5,000 miles on the tires. My trips have me traveling on everything from interstate highways to gravel roads; I've had no problems on any of them. In general, etrailer.com has been my go-to place to get parts for my trailers.

Work Great

by:

Be informed, the pilot hole is not 2.5" as described in both the written description and the video. It is more like 2 13/16". Even though I have bolts and not lug nuts the wheel worked out for me (I did not return it). I informed customer service and they confirmed the measurement but, as of the time I wrote this review the description has not been changed. Otherwise, it is a great product for the price. Overall service, delivery time, and assistance with the pilot hole issue was great. I only rated 4 stars instead of 5 because the description was wrong.

by:

good solid trailer jack. easy to assemble and bolt to trailer. Also purchased 2 Kenda tires and 8" galvanized wheels #AM30050. They arrived mounted on rim and fully inflated!!

by:

Perfect replacement, great turn around time, great price. Who could ask for more

  • Does 4.80/4.00-8 Trailer Tire Need to be at Max PSI for Lightweight Trailer
It's not uncommon for trailer users to deflate the tires for lightweight trailers, but when we've spoken with our trailer tire manufacturers, like Kenda with their 4.80/4.00-8 Bias Trailer Tire # AM30050, they've said to stick with the psi rating on the sidewall of the tire. Some tire manufacturers have charts that show what to put the psi rating at when hauling different loads so if your manufacturer has something like that feel free to follow it, otherwise it's best to go with the rating...

The # AM30050 Kenda 4.80/4.00-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" Galvanized Wheel has a wheel capacity of 910lbs. The tire capacity has a maximum load of 745 lbs at 90 psi as you stated. You are correct in assuming that this can only carry 745 lbs, but that is just for the individual tire. Since you would have at least 2 on your trailer, the pair would be capable of holding 1,490 lbs since the weight of the trailer will be distributed between the two tires. • Can Camper Trailer Weight Capacity Be Increased By Changing Tire Load Range Rating
Thank you for the photo of your camper trailer. When it comes to a trailer's weight carrying capacity the lowest-rated part of the trailer - either the frame, axle, hubs, wheels or tires - will determine if more capacity can be added. If the tires were the lowest-rated component then changing them to another size or simply to a higher load range in the same size could give you more capacity/safety margin. But if the tires are not the "weakest link" then upgrading them does not add capacity...
