Easy Hookup with Long, Self-Aligning Arms

Blue Ox Alpha 2 Self-Aligning Arms

The Alpha 2's convenient, self-centering arms help to make hookup a snap. Older and more economical tow bars have rigid arms that are essentially locked in place so you have to drive your towed vehicle into the exact position necessary for hookup. But with the Alpha 2, you can connect from the approximate towing position quickly and easily. Once you have connected the tow bar to your vehicle's base plates, simply drive your RV forward until the tow bar arms fully extend and lock in place. Before hitting the road, be sure to check that the arms are properly latched to avoid damage to your towing setup.

The Alpha 2's arms are also longer than the arms on the average tow bar. As a result, they provide an improved turning radius, making it easy to maneuver around obstacles and execute sharp turns.

Non-Binding for Simple Disconnect

Blue Ox Alpha 2 Non-Binding Tow Arms

Being unable to unhook your car because of a bind in the tow bar is really frustrating. And the tight spots and uneven terrain at some campsites can put your tow bar into a bind, even if you're careful.

Fortunately, Blue Ox has defeated the age-old problem of binding by creating a tow bar that is just as easy to release as it is to hook up. Simply press down the handles on the tow bar arms until the internal latch disengages. By releasing some of the static pressure from the tow bar, you can move the arms just enough to make disconnecting your car a snap, even if it's not perfectly lined up with your RV.

Sturdy, Dependable Triple-Lug Connection

Blue Ox Alpha 2 Triple-Lug Connection

The Blue Ox base plates on your vehicle are equipped with two tabs each that connect to the brackets on the ends of these tow bar arms. The triple-lug design of the Alpha 2 tow bar creates a tight, stable connection by surrounding both base plate lugs. The result is a sturdy, reinforced connection that is strong and rigid for a safe, dependable towing experience.

Hooking up the Alpha 2 to your base plates is as simple as it is secure. Just line up the triple-lug end of the tow bar arm with the base plate so that the center lug is positioned between the two tabs of the base plate. Then insert the 1/2" keeper pin through all of the lugs and secure it with the included quick pin.

Heavy-Duty, Vinyl-Coated Safety Cables Included

Blue Ox Alpha 2 Safety Cables

The vinyl-coated safety cables, which have a 6,500-lb weight rating, provide added protection should the tow bar ever disconnect during towing. Steel hooks connect each cable to your towed vehicle's base plates and to your motorhome's trailer hitch.

Simple Storage

Blue Ox Alpha 2 Easy Storage

The Alpha 2 can be easily stored on your RV when it's not in use. Once the arms are disconnected from the base plate, just fold them together so they are side by side. Then swing the arms toward your RV, sliding the integrated pin into the bracket located on the shank of the tow bar to secure it in place. Finally, push the arms down so they are parallel with your RV's bumper.

Guide to Flat Towing

Flat towing your vehicle is much more convenient than using a trailer or a tow dolly. These other options take up much more storage space, leaving you less room both at home and at the campsite. In addition, securing your vehicle to a trailer or tow dolly can be a hassle and more time consuming than hooking up with a tow bar.

There are 5 basic components needed when flat towing a vehicle: a tow bar, a base plate kit, a safety cable set, tow bar wiring, and a supplemental braking system.

Towing Basics

The tow bar links your towed car to your motorhome. It attaches to the custom-fit base plates that install on the frame of your towed car. Safety cables ensure that your towed car does not separate from your motorhome in the event that your tow bar becomes detached. Tow bar wiring allows your towed vehicle's signal lights to sync up with your motorhome's tail lights, which is required by law in most states. Finally, the supplemental braking system - also required in most states - brakes your towed car when the brakes in your motorhome are activated, preventing wear on the motorhome and decreasing braking distance for your entire setup.

Best choice for a tow bar. Safe, reliable, easy to use. If you're thinking about touring in a motorhome without a tow vehicle you might want to think again. We believe the Blue Ox is the best investment we've made in our RV setup. Can't imagine not having our CR-v with us. The Blue Ox makes it super easy to connect and disconnect the towed vehicle. I also like that it doesn't alter the appearance of the tow vehicle when disconnected.

Works great towing our 2017 Jeep Cherokee behind the MH.
Would definitely recommend this tow bar.

by:

Tow bar is phenomenal. It takes about 7 minutes to install it, the safety cables, ambilocal chord, and brake safety cable. Add 3 more minutes for light and brake inspection in the jeep being towed. 10 minutes and you are ready to depart. The combination of the tow bar and vacuum braking system are incredible.

2004 VW New Beetle tow frame mounting is a very difficult job as the front bumper skin is mounted with four hidden torx bolts at the fender and bumper skin joint. The instructions say the frame can be mounted by leaving that seam connected and lifting the bumper skin but it is likely that damage will occur. So remove the skin. Reinstalling requires replacing the torx bolts and threaded plates with large sheet metal screws and clip nuts that can be purchased at a parts store. Also, be sure to check that the pins will insert after the frame is bolted on. I had clearance issues on the drivers side and had to remove the frame to trim the radiator support with great care as the A/C condenser has a tube within the area of trimming. Also, the braces below the frame fit poorly and require shimming and wiring harness and power steering cooler adjustment. It’s best to install brace to car frame bolts with the tow frame off using the provided nuts on wire rods. Leave loose and tighten when installing frame. The job took three days in my home garage with minimal tools. In retrospect I should have found a Jeep to tow but I owned the Beetle. Good luck.

I have a crippled right arm and depend mainly on my left arm. I have found the Blue Ox tow bar is easy and fairly quick to hook up even with only one arm. It’s self alignment after being attached is a big plus allowing me to hook up and be on the road in 10-15 minutes and it’s very rugged.

We love the Blue Ox Alpha 2 Non-Binding Tow Bar - Motorhome Mount - 2" Hitch - 6,500 lbs. It's easy to use. I'd recommend it to anyone.

by:

After 1 year, the tow bar is still working perfectly, no issues or concerns. We are confident towing our Honda Pilot behind our Class C motorhome and the time it takes to hook/unhook is under 5 minutes. Great product!

by:

This product has been tremendous. The ability to quickly disconnect the vehicle when necessary and in any orientation has been a plus for me. The non-binding feature of the tow bar really works.

by:

Delivered as expected with good packaging (some times heavy items rip out of box ) but etrailer packed the tow bar so it would stay put in packaging.

by:

Works great, easy hook up. Wouldn't want anything but Blue Ox. Your shipping was quick and great videos.
Very happy

by:

My Blue Ox Tow bar and Break Buddy System perform as advertised. I tow my Buick Enclave behind my 30’ class C with confidence.

by:

Best tow bar you can get. BlueOx never disappoints and etrailer had a great price.

by:

My Roadmaster Falcon II finally failed for good after one rebuild decided to go with Blue Ox and I could not be more pleased with the quality and what I believe to be a superior design. etrailer has always performed beyond my expectations and I will be sure to return for any future needs.

by:

Blue Ox is the best product for flat towing a vehicle

by:

Spent over $3k for parts and was missing 4 whiz nuts to complete installation. When I contracted etrailer for support, it seemed Blue Ox wanted to question my integrity over the missing $5 in whiz nuts after I spent over $3k. Had to buy my own nuts to complete install.

Used on a Toyota Tacoma. Worked great. I have sold that truck but kept the tow bar for another vehicle.

We have traveled a several thousand miles with this Blue Ox tow bar towing our Jeep behind our motorhome. This Year we moved from Pennsylvania to North Carolina and the Blue Ox came in handy towing behind the UHaul truck we rented.

Great setup but difficult to install in a 2004 VW New Beetle. Used a brake booster stud to grab the pedal pull cable clamp.

  • How Much Tongue Weight Does a Tow Bar Apply to Motorhome Hitch
Correct, when flat towing a vehicle 4-wheels-down the only actual weight on the hitch will be that of a portion of the tow bar's weight. Some of the tow bar weight will be on the vehicle's front end so only a portion will be on the hitch side. Most of the better motor-home-mounted tow bars like the Blue Ox Alpha # BX7380 weigh about 40-lbs so say half of this will be seen by the hitch as tongue weight.

You are going to go with a new tow bar since there isn't a Blue Ox base plate to Roadmaster tow bar adapter that is compatible with the Tracker that you have. It sounds like your tow bar's vertical storage bracket (on the shank) may have a bit of extra powder coated finish that is making the first-time use of the Alpha # BX7380 a little bit tough. You should be fine to give the stud a gentle tap with a rubber or wood mallet to coax it into place in the slot. This should only be necessary once for the initial installation. • Is Blue Ox Alpha Tow Bar Non-Binding?
It's difficult to quantify the degree of truth in terms of the Blue Ox Alpha Tow Bar # BX7380 being a non-binding tow bar. What I can tell you is that we have not heard about issues with binding, and it is important that you are both in a straight line and on a level surface to make it easier to disconnect; facing downhill and trying to disconnect the Alpha or the (now discontinued) Aladdin tow bar will make the process a difficult one, as you seem to know already.

  • Can Tow Bar Be Used to Tow Vehicle With Another Vehicle Instead of an RV
You can indeed, as long as the vehicle you're towing with has the proper tow rating and you can keep the tow bar within 3 inches +/- of level. You might need to use a high/low adapter to get the tow bar within 3 inches of level, take a look at the FAQ article I've linked for you, which will explain it further. You'll also need the proper trailer connector on the tow vehicle to accommodate whatever tow lighting set-up you have on the dinghy.
