Simple Removal for Full Bed Access

B&W Companion Simple Removal

With the Companion from B&W, you get a heavy-duty fifth-wheel trailer hitch that mounts in your truck bed by connecting directly to a custom underbed mounting kit (sold separately) with the included components. No modifications are required to your truck or trailer. And no additional parts are required for the system to work. When you're done towing, the entire hitch can be removed for complete bed access.

Quiet, Secure Ride

The 1" thick jaw on the Companion is precision machined to provide a tight, sturdy connection. And unlike slide-bar models, the rounded 2-piece jaw on this fifth-wheel trailer hitch inhibits rattle and movement by securely wrapping around your trailer's king pin, resulting in easier hookup and a safer, quieter ride.

B&W Companion Bushings

In addition to the sturdy jaw, the Companion has durable polyurethane bushings built in to provide a smoother, more comfortable towing experience. These bushings sit on top of the pivot arms that support the fifth-wheel head. Because the head is resting on a padded area, it is able to pivot without clanking. The ability of the head to pivot - both front to back and side to side - along with the trailer also helps to limit the chucking that may occur with a more static hitch.

Non-Binding Latch Handle

The dual jaw on the Companion is operated by a simple-to-use cam-action handle. This handle allows you to quickly and easily release the jaws on the hitch, even if you are on uneven terrain. If any binding does occur between your truck and trailer, the jaws may remain closed after you move the handle to the open position. But because the handle is unlatched, there is nothing keeping the jaws closed except for the binding pressure. Therefore, simply driving your truck forward will be enough to force the jaws to open.

The cam-action handle is held in the closed position with the included pin and clip. For extra security, you can replace the pin with a sturdy padlock. The shackle on the lock you choose should have a diameter of 5/16", height of 3", and a width of 2-1/4".

Assembly of the B&W Companion

To install the Companion, first bolt the included RV post to the Companion's base. This post is what inserts into the hole in your truck bed. The RV post attaches to the base in 1 of 2 ways to allow for improved cab clearance and proper positioning over your truck's axle.

The next step is to set up the Companion's pivot arms. The arms are what allow the hitch to be adjusted front to back as well as up and down for optimal positioning. As a result, this hitch can accommodate the height of your trailer and also help to give you the cab clearance needed to execute turns while towing.

Companion 3500 Base Diagram

To adjust either the height of the hitch or the fore/aft positioning, just attach the hitch's pivot arms in the desired location on the base. The above diagram gives an indication of where to mount the arms so that you get the height and the cab clearance that you need.

The hitch head installs on top of the pivot arms. When you have the head in position, simply secure it to the arms with the included pins.

Build quality was great and it looks perfect. My only issue is they should supply hard washers and better quality lock washers. 2 of them bent so bad I had to remove them and file the heads to get the huge burrs off to tru to seat another one. If you supply high strength bolts you need to supply a higher grade lock washer it it just tears up the power coat .

I haven’t pull the 5th wheeler yet, but the B&W Companion is a super heavy duty hitch and it looks like it will handle the job. The installation of the hitch went well. The instructions were pretty straight forward. No problems.

Ordered the companion hitch to use with the turnover hitch that I also purchased from etrailer. Shipped quickly and was easy to install and adjust for my setup. Item arrived in perfect condition.

Love the companion. Its easy to assemble and install. It's so nice do be able to have the full bed of my truck by just removing the hitch when not pulling my camper!!

This part of the installation is easy. There are two main pieces. Fasten runners on the bottom of each of the two legs that sit in the bed grooves. Attach the large square pin that goes in the hole in the bed to the main base(there are several bolting patterns depending on where you want the 5th wheel assembly to sit in the bed) and set it in place. Item is heavy even without the upper part (5th wheel plate assembly). Best done by two people. 5th wheel plate assembly also heavy, but can be handled by one person. The directions are clear, easy to understand. Very nice clean setup.

Received my companion hitch in two days. Free delivery. Couldn’t believe how fast it shipped. I installed it myself in 3 hours. The hitch is rock solid and built heavy. I can’t wait to hook on to my camper and try it out. It is very easy to install. A second person would be useful to set base.

This is my third B&W companion 5th wheel hitch. The first two were the old version. I like the updates they have made too the unit making it stronger and the narrower base. My only complaint is with UPS shipping which tore up the shipping box and dumped it on my driveway without even notifying me, luckily the hitch wasn't damaged and nothing missing.

I love my B&W filth wheel, I do commercial hauling from factories to dealerships all over the U.S. and I travel 4000 plus miles each week. My B&W filth wheel has never let me down and the double locking jaw is awesome. I get a lot of good comments on my filth wheel and I just tell it like it is, I love it and wouldn’t want any other.

We received our new BW Companion hitch on time. Noticed that our BW Turnover Ball hitch already installed in truck required a shorter socket post one week out from our trip. With a quick discussion with the great people at etrailer as well as BW, we had the new socket post shipped and installed prior to leaving town. Easy install - All worked as designed. So glad to have responsive parties involved here to help us out. Thanks!

Great hitch! I like the jaws completely closing on the king pin. There is no jarring back and forth while on the highway. Connecting and disconnecting is a breeze. I love having extra adjustments. (Adjust up and down forward and back). It can be time consuming though finding the sweet spot. Solid construction so it makes it heavy! I do take this in and out of my truck myself and take to the building on my wheel barrow.

I would like to say that I was not looking forward to putting this hitch on my truck. I heard nothing but nightmares and horror stories, but it couldn't be farther from the truth. I had a friend come over to help (glad I did cause that turnoverball hitch would have been a bear to hold up by yourself. It was ten times easier than I would have imagined. Just follow the instructions and it's a piece of cake. We had the turnover all hitch on in less than 2 hours. Unfortunately I had a rusted brake line that I had to repair before completing the job. Haven't used it yet but can't wait to hitch it up and hit the road. Thanks for making this hitch so easy to install. I'm glad it's American made and extremely heavy duty.

I recently bought the gooseneck and fifth wheel b&w hitches to install on my 2008 f 250. I could not be more happy with the products and customer service that etrailer provides. I also bought The Pollack t connector that was also easy to use. The install was done at home and easy to understand. Thanks again.

Nice hitch, well made, good adjustment options. It's heavy around 200 lbs so tough to manuever even with the head detached. Get a hoist and the B&W lift attachment. I just got my lift adapter. Its how I manage to report an approximate weight. Tows well. Doesnt like to hook up at much of an angle. Back up camera alignment markers help but have to lower tailgate to finish hook up. Would like to add different cutout tailgate but few offer a camera install option. Future purchase. Good hitch.

Molly Just wanted to send you some pictures of my 1991 Ford F250 with my new BW fifth wheel trailer hitch that I recently purchased from the trailer The service from etrailer was excellent I will recommend you to anyone who asks

- BWRVK3500-5W
by:

So let me start off by saying, This is not a “light” hitch that handles easy in and out of the truck. However, I don’t buy my hitches for the ease of removal, I buy it for the safety of my family and investments while on the road. Any other things like ease of use and removability are bonuses. It is also not to hard to get it in and out of the truck. Very easy to separate the coupler from base and the base from truck. This hitch in my opinion is the best you can get! Because it is pulled down tight to the bed of your truck, it eliminates the chucking and jarring of conventional hitches. The tolerances are tight! In a good way! Super easy to hitch up and unhook on different types of terrain. Solid connection between truck and trailer. The coupler has a shock absorber that is on the roll axis(tipping left or right) which is amazing!! It allows some give but keeps it solid! This is especially important when towing through unexpected crosswinds. B and W really makes a great product! I would use nothing less! I also think the 20k is being very modest. Which is awesome that b and w doesn’t just throw the highest number they can legally display like some other hitches that claim 24k and 25k I wouldn’t trust a 12k trailer on! If you want the best and most reliable 5ver hitch, this is it. Spend the extra for the peace of mind and comfort.

- BWRVK3500-5W
by:

Quiet and secure. Nice- The gooseneck hole is the only visible feature in the bed when pulled out. Three problems- 1) WAY TOO HEAVY. Two men and a boy required to lift in and out. 2) Receiver tube protrudes bottom making it inconvenient to slide, store. 3) Top plate fits so snug, and king pin has zero vertical play in latch so it's difficult to judge when your trailer has raised to correct height to unhitch. Just saw a friend's ALUMINUM gooseneck hitch that weighs 1/4 of this. So jealous.

I spoke with Jamie to make sure I ordered the correct 5th wheel hitch for my truck and she went above and beyond. Ordered 11-July (Monday morning) and was delivered 14-July (Wednesday afternoon). I couldn't have asked for a better experience. Haven't installed the hitch yet so only time will tell on that.

Since your Ford F-250 is a 6-3/4-foot short bed and your Grand Design Reflection 29RS 5th wheel does not have a tapered nose for increased turning clearance you will need a slider hitch to be able to safely make tight turns, or you can install a Sidewinder pivoting pin box and still use a fixed (non-sliding hitch). However, the excellent B&W Companion 20K hitch # BWRVK3500-5W, which mounts using the gooseneck install kit # BWGNRK1313-5W, is not compatible with any type of pivoting pin box. You are correct that B&W makes a serious product. Their 5th wheel hitches are produced...

  • Latch Pin Will Not Engage In Socket Post Of B and W Companion Hitch
In order to pin or unpin the latch pin of the B&W Companion 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch part # BWRVK3500-5W the plastic bed liner would need to cut out the complete circumference around the hitch. If the bed liner is not cut out then the latch pin will not engage properly. If you do have the bed liner completely cut out around the hitch then it is a good idea to make sure the foot pads are in the correct orientation. Each pad attaches to the base through the slot at the end of the base...

  • Recommended Under-Bed 5th Wheel Rail Kit for 2015 Chevy Silverado 3500
If you are looking for the B&W installation rails that work with the B&W Companion 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch # BWRVK3500-5W, you will just need part # BWGNRK1012-5W. This is an underbed kit that allows for full bed access and also doubles as a gooseneck hitch when the 5th-wheel hitch is removed. Once installed, this will provide a single hole in the center of the bed that will act as the mounting point for the B&W Companion. If you are looking for more of a puck-style system, I recommend...

  • Recommendation To Reduce 5th Wheel Trailer Sway
If you are not pulling the trailer level, I recommend making that adjustment. This may mean adjusting your king pin on your 33 foot Rockwood Ultra Lite Camper or adjusting the height on your Companion 5th wheel hitch # BWRVK3500-5W. It would definitely be worth moving the angle closer to your cab because that will put a little more weigh over your axle in your 2016 Ford F-350. Having the tongue too high can cause the trailer to move and sway, but you may also want to consider using rear...

  • Will B&W Companion Fit a 2011 Ram 3500 with a Plastic Duraline Bed Liner
We have talked to B&W before and they recommend either removing the plastic bed liner or cutting out the bed liner where the Companion Fifth Wheel Trailer Hitch # BWRVK3500-5W will rest so the hitch has the best surface to set on. Also the weight of a coupled trailer could damage the bed liner and it is possible that the bed liner would prevent the hitch from dropping down far enough to secure in the gooseneck ball hole.
