Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

A good alternative to 20.5 x 8-10 tires

by:

Rims are great but sadly tires wore super fast

by:

I received the tires within a few days after ordering. They were well packed. Unfortunately, one of the tires was mis-coded as a 5-4.5 wheel, when it was actually a 4-4 wheel with a 5-4.5 sticker. Customer service responded very quickly to ship a replacement, and schedule a UPS pickup. Excellent service.

by:

I haven't had them put on yet but they look great and I received them in record time. I think I will be ordering from etrailer again.

by:

Got exactly what I wanted.
Arrived when
it was supposed to and in great condition.

by:

Tires have been great and look great at a great price.

by:

The bolt holes were partially blocked by galvanizing material. I had to use a round file to clean them out. That's the only reason I didn't give 5 stars.

  • How To Measure A Trailer Spindle To Find Replacement Hubs And Bearings
To make sure you find the right replacement hubs you can do a couple of things. First check out the bearing and see if you can find the numbers for the bearings either etched or stamped on the side of the bearing. If you can not find the numbers you will need to measure the spindle. I have attached a drawing that shows where you need to measure the spindle to find the right replacements. The drawing also shows where to measure for a seal as well. You will also need to measure the inside...

  • Recommended Tire for a 20-Foot Pontoon Boat Trailer Traveling Down the Highway
Sorry to hear your tire heated up and came apart. Special trailer tires are typically rated to operate at a maximum speed of 65 mph and should always be inflated to their maximum air pressure stated on the tire. I would certainly go with a radial tire over bias because radials run cooler and flexes more giving it better contact with the road. I included a link to all the radial tires we currently offer and if you provide me your tire size I would be more than happy to make a recommendation. Take...

  • Spare Tire Recommendation for a Dual Jet Ski Trailer with 205 x 65 x 10 Load Range E Tires
My recommendation is to stay with the load range that your trailers axle is rated for and that matches the tires on your trailer. In this case a load range E trailer tire, like item # AM3H490, is rated for 1,650 lbs, which would be good for a single axle trailer with a 3,000 to 3,300 lb axle. If the Axle on your trailer is rated lower, 2,200 pounds or less then going with a load range C tire for a spare would be just fine, but having a load range E tire on the opposite side could cause...

  • What Size Hub Fits a 10" Wheel w/ a 5 on 4-1/2" Bolt Pattern?
The Kenda 205/65-10 Bias Trailer Tire with 10" Galvanized Wheel item # AM3H490 will work with a hub up to 8" in diameter like the Easy Grease Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly for 2K Axles item # AKHD-545-2-EZ-2K. The best way to determine the max wheel size would be to know the weight capacity of your axle. If you have a 2,000 lbs axle with a 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern then the recommended wheel size is between 8" and 12". If you have a 3,500 lb axle with a 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern then the...

The tires in your size that we offer have varying pressure ratings depending on their load capacity. Trailer tires will indicate their required inflation pressure on the sidewall of the tire. This is usually stated as a...

  • Do You Carry a 6 Inch Wheel? Do You Have Something Smaller in Size that the Kenda 215/60-8 Tire?
Hello Ray, I do have an option for you that results in a smaller overall setup. Not because the wheel is smaller, but because the tire itself is. The smallest wheel we carry is an 8". I did a search for a 6" option, and the only thing that came up in my search was a wheelbarrow. So unfortunately, that's not going to help us here. • Does Hub Size Matter For Kenda 205/65-10 Tire & Wheel
Hi Steve, Yes, the hub size does matter for trailer tires and wheels like the Kenda 205/65-10 Bias Trailer Tire with 10" Galvanized Wheel # AM3H490. You'll need to ensure your hub is designed for the specific wheel size, though if you're replacing the tire and wheel with one that is the same size you have now, there won't be an issue.

  • Does Hub Face Diameter Matter?
Hello Steve, good question. I am assuming you are referring to the diameter of the "face" of the hub. The short answer is, yes, hub diameter does matter. It does matter in the sense that you want to be sure the face of the hub is large enough to support your wheel size. Then on the other side, if a hub has too large of a face, it may not work with some smaller wheel sizes. For example, the Easy Grease Trailer Idler Hub # AKIHUB-545-2-G-EZ-2K has a smaller face that is designed to work...

However, I do recommend double checking the bolt pattern on your wheel just to make 100% sure it's good.
