Recommended Tire for a 20-Foot Pontoon Boat Trailer Traveling Down the Highway

Updated 05/19/2025 | Published 05/20/2015

Question:

I have a single axle trailer for a 20-foot pontoon boat and I live in NC and want to trailer my pontoon to up state NY. I had a bad experience with a tire from tractor supply that heated up and came completly apart on the highway doing 65 - 70 mph. I need to but some good tires on my trailer and any info would be a great help. What is the best speed to drive with this type of tire. Thanks.

Sorry to hear your tire heated up and came apart.

Special trailer tires are typically rated to operate at a maximum speed of 65 mph and should always be inflated to their maximum air pressure stated on the tire.

I would certainly go with a radial tire over bias because radials run cooler and flexes more giving it better contact with the road.

I included a link to all the radial tires we currently offer and if you provide me your tire size I would be more than happy to make a recommendation.

Take a look at the informative articles too.

I have a dual axle galvanized pontoon trailer for a 20' pontoon. The tires on it are size 5 30-12 load range D. I believe they are bias tires. I had a tire blowout on the freeway. I want to get a better tire and wish for your expertise. What would you recommend? thanks Bruce

@Bruce Sorry to hear about your tire blowing out on the freeway - trailer issues on the side of the highway are never fun. I recommend picking up the Kenda Karrier S-Trail ST145/R12 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range E # AM10140 to replace your 5.30-12 tires. These have a similar size, but a slight increase in weight capacity, and an 81 mph speed rating so you can travel confidently on the highway.
