Product Expert Lindsey S's Opinion

Why would I buy this?

  • Rotating latches let you really fine-tune the tension on the bars for good weight distribution
  • Quieter ride than systems with steel brackets or cams - no scraping or loud popping
  • Extended height shank is great for towing with a lifted truck

Why wouldn't I buy this?

  • The chain setup just won't give you enough tension for good sway control
  • Included wrench can be a pain to use
  • You'll have to buy a hitch ball separately
Shank fits 2" hitches and offers up to a 13" rise and a 7" drop. System uses optimal points of tension to help prevent sway while it balances your trailer's load for a more level ride. Clamp-on brackets require no drilling. Lowest Prices for the best weight distribution from Blue Ox. Create a stable ride for your tow vehicle and trailer with a weight distribution hitch. Adding spring bars to your towing system applies leverage, which transfers the load that is pushing down on the rear of your vehicle to all the axles on both your tow vehicle and your trailer, resulting in an even distribution of weight throughout. The result is a smooth, level ride, as well as the ability to tow the maximum capacity of your hitch.

Selecting a Weight Distribution System

The tongue weight rating is the most important factor in determining which size weight distribution system you should use. If the bars of the system you choose are rated too high for your setup, they will create a rigid ride, which can result in a bouncing trailer. If, on the other hand, the bars are not rated high enough, the system will be unable to properly distribute the weight, rendering it virtually useless.

To determine the proper weight rating for a weight distribution system, you must first determine your trailer's tongue weight. Then add to that the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. These two measurements make up the tongue weight rating for a weight distribution system.

Unique Features of Blue Ox SwayPro

Blue Ox SwayPro Spring Bars

Unlike other weight distribution systems, the SwayPro has automatically locking brackets throughout. Both spring bars insert, slotted side up, into the head assembly and then lock securely in place. Removal is just as easy - simply lift the locking pins on the trunnions and slide the bars out. Blue Ox spring bars are interchangeable with each other. If you buy a new trailer or tow vehicle and you need to increase or decrease your capacity, you can simply buy new spring bars instead of purchasing a whole new system.

Blue Ox SwayPro Rotating Latch Brackets

Other systems have lift brackets that require you to apply a good amount of leverage to get them to snap up, which can be difficult and frustrating. With the SwayPro, all you have to do is insert the lift chain into the bracket slot and rotate the bracket with the included wrench until the lock pin engages.

Another feature of the SwayPro is the easy-to-use head. The required pitch is already built into the head, so the only adjustment that may be needed is the placement of the head on the shank. Move the head up or down along the weight distribution shank to achieve the proper height. No additional, fine-tune adjustment is needed, which means no hard-to-access washers or difficult-to-use thumbscrew.

Built-In Tension Stops Sway

Blue Ox SwayPro System with Built-In Sway Control Hooked Up

The SwayPro offers four points of built-in sway control. Within the head assembly, the trunnions are designed to hold the spring bars securely in position, placing just enough tension on them to cause them to constantly force your trailer in line. At the other end of this weight distribution system, the rotating brackets ensure that the lift chains are pulled as taut as possible. In addition, the basic design of the brackets keeps much of the length of the lift chains wrapped up inside of the brackets. Typically, only a couple of links hang down from each bracket. So each chain is held more stable than in traditional weight distribution systems, where more than twice as many links are exposed. This tight, stable design limits the movement of the spring bars so that they can exert more force on your trailer to effectively keep it from shifting side to side. Furthermore, unlike many friction-style sway controls, the SwayPro allows you to back up your trailer without having to remove or disengage the system.

Video Transcript for Blue Ox Weight Distribution - WD With Sway Control - BXW1506 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Blue Ox SwayPro weight distribution system with built in sway control. This system has it's own weight capacity of 1,000 pounds, to 1,500 pounds, and a gross towing weight capacity of 15,000 pounds. A weight distribution system is going to help evenly distribute weight over the axles of the tow vehicle and the trailer which is going to offer stability and control. Ultimately a system like this is going to help create a level ride for both the tow vehicle and the trailer. The unit is going to feature built-in sway control, which helps prevent trailer sway. It's built-in so it's not something separate that you have to add on. When it comes to the bars right here, and in relation to the built-in sway control, constant tension is in the trunnions which is going to help force the trailer inline at all times, preventing sway.

Then we're going to have the rotating lift brackets that ensure that the chains are tight and secure to keep the spring bars from moving. Now one of the things that I want to mention as well is unlike many friction style sway controls, the SwayPro allows you to backup your trailer without having to remove or disengage the system. We're going to have the spring steel bars, these are going to flex for a controlled, softer, smoother, and quieter ride. They automatically lock in place and easily remove from the head assembly. To remove it all you have to do is lift up on the pin, and then the bar can slide right out, so it's really nice and easy to do. When you're ready to install and lock it in place just place it in, rotate it until that pin goes into the lock position, so very quick and easy to get those attached, and to get those removed. Now a really neat feature about the SwayPro that I want to be careful to mention is that if you ever get a new or different trailer, you don't have to worry about buying a completely new weight distribution system.

With this system, all you have to do is purchase new spring bars that are going to be appropriately rated for your trailer, all the other components of this system can stay in place, all you have to do is get new bars and then that's all there is to it. Now these bars are marked with a dot system, on the shank end to identify the weight rating, so these bars are going to have 4 dots on them, which means that these are rated for up to 1,500 pounds. Another neat thing about the Blue Ox SwayPro is that you don't have to worry about any pins or clips, the unit is going to feature self locking devices throughout the system. On the back of the head assembly where the bars go in, on each side there's going to a Zerk fitting, a grease Zerk fitting, which allows for easy maintenance, that way you can just attach your grease gun, pump in the grease that's needed, and that's all there is to it. All the grease stays contained inside the head assembly, so no grease gets on the bars, which means that there's no mess to cleanup, and you don't have to worry about grease getting on your hands or on your clothes, so it's all contained in the head assembly. Now the unit is going to come with these unique rotating latch lift brackets, these connect the spring bars to the trailer, by using the chains. What I want to go over real quick is just how they work.

Really nice easy to use design, we're going to have this right here, this is the lock pin, and so to get the bracket into a position to connect the chain you pull the lock pin, and then you rotate this all the way down. What that does is it puts the lift bracket in a position where you can easily connect the chain, there's going to be a groove in here that safely holds the chain in place. So you install the chain, and then you would take the included tool right here, place it over, and then you would keep rotating this until that pin engages and locks the unit in place. It's really really easy to get the chains installed, and to get the unit rotated into the ready-to-use position. These are really nice, they're solid steel construction. To release the bracket all you have to do is pull out on that lock pin, and then rotate it down to disengage the chains.

These are a clamp on design which means that there's no drilling needed. They're also very low profile so that way they won't interfere with frame mounted accessories. When it comes to the head assembly of the unit, and making sure we have the right tilt, you don't have to worry about that because the required tilt and pitch is built into the head assembly, so no adjustment is needed, all you have to do is find the correct placement along the adjustable shank, to achieve the proper height for your setup. No additional fine tune adjustments are needed, which means that you don't have to worry anymore about messing with hard to access washers, thumbscrews, cams, or shim packs, so that's really nice design and feature of the Blue Ox SwayPro. Now the unit is made from a steel construction, it's going to have a power coated finish with a nice little hammered texture, it's going to last a long time, it's going to look great for a long time, and it's going to do a good job at resisting rust and corrosion. The system is going to come with everything that you see here on the table as well as a detailed set of installation instructions, and an owners manual. Jut to go over some of the components real quick about everything I have laid out here. These screws or bolts are designed for the clamp-on installation of the lift bracket, so there's a threaded portion right here that goes through, you tighten those down. It's going to come with 2 different sets, you can use the shorter set for thicker or wider trailer frames, and then you can use the longer set for thinner or more narrow trailer frames, and it's going to have the jam nuts that you would tighten down to make sure that those set screws don't come back off. You're also going to get a reducer sleeve, that goes in this area right here, so the diameter of this hole for your hitch ball; now a hitch ball is sold separately, the diameter right here is going to be an 1 1/4". You can use the reducer sleeve to reduce that opening from 1 1/4" down to 1", so just keep those measurements in mind when choosing the correct hitch ball for this system. It's going to come with everything you see on the table, it's also going to include your hitch pin and clip to get the unit secured inside of your trailer hitch. Now when it comes to the tongue weight rating, we're looking at 1,000 pounds to 1,500 pounds. Gross towing weight rating is 15,000 pounds. The unit is designed to fit inside of a 2" by 2" trailer hitch receiver that is rated for use with weight distribution systems. When positioning the lift brackets, these are going to be positioned about 29" back from the hitch ball along the trailer frame. Now the lift brackets will fit trailer frame width up to 2 1/2", and are only going to take up about 4" along the trailer frame. I want to talk about the shank on this system real quick. This unit features an 11 hole design which allows for a lot of adjustment if needed. You have 11 holes to choice from when getting the head assembly attached to the shank which is a . That's quite a bit when it comes to weight distribution systems, so it's going to allow for full adjustment with this unit. These holes are going to be separated on center by about 1 1/4". I want to take some measurements of the shank length, measuring from the center of the hitch pinhole, to the very front of the shank, That's going to be 11". From the center of the hitch pinhole, to the center of the adjustment holes, that's going to be 10 inches. Then from the center of the hitch pinhole to the back of this upright bar, that's going to give us a measurement of right on 9". Again, 11 hole design, allows for a lot of adjustment. With the unit in the rise position, if we have the head assembly at the highest setting, it's going to give us a maximum rise of 13", that's measuring from the inside top edge of the receiver tube of the hitch, or the top of the shank right here, to the top of the ball platform. If we flip the shank over into the drop position, and move the head assembly at the lowest setting, it's going to give us a maximum drop of 7 1/2". Again from the inside top edge of the receiver tube of the hitch, or the top of the shank, to the top of that ball platform. Then the holes again are separated on center by 1 1/4", 11 hole design, a lot of adjustment is there is needed. The product is made right here in the USA, and it's going to be covered with a limited lifetime warranty. That's going to do it for today's look at the Blue Ox SwayPro weight distribution system, with the built-in sway control.

After purchasing/pulling my my 32’ weekend warrior with the supplied sway control, I was terrified by the amount of sway I was experiencing after fully loading with the toys. This Blue Ox tamed the beast 99%. Be mindful on how you distribute your load weight when overstuffing your toy hauler and you’ll have zero issues. Great product!! 716511

Very easy to use and adjust. Worlds of improvement over older style that I used to have. I use it without the tension bars as well almost every day for multiple trailers. 715642

This weight distribution system is a replacement for my original system which failed after 8 years of hauling a variety of travel trailers. I spent some time researching the type I wanted and the Blue Ox SwayPro was highly recommended by a fellow airstreamer. I was impressed with its simplicity and no additional sway control being required. The website is excellent, you just put in your vehicle details and the appropriate systems are displayed. The BXW 1506 is for 1500 lbs maximum tongue weight and comes with the eleven hole, 2” receiver hitch mount. I needed to mount with the long portion pointing down, this gave me about 4” of ground clearance. (Ideal for ripping permafrost but not state park campgrounds). The support from customer service was outstanding and the appropriate part BXW4001 was selected and shipped very quickly. The hitch was installed using the enclosed instructions and after viewing videos on the etrailer website. It looks good and seems to be doing what it is intended to do. I have a short camping trip in a few days so this will test the system. Thank you etrailer for your swift knowledgeable service. 613050

I decided to give a SwayPro hitch a try when I purchased a new TT (37' TT). The previous two Equalizer hitchs (24' TT and 33' TT) I had owned worked fine, but I hated having to stop and get out to tighten/loosen the anti-sway device when having to maneuver around and they were noisy. I installed the SwayPro myself, it was very easy to do. The instructions are clear, and the online videos very helpful. I waited to make this review until after making a couple of trips with the trailer. The trailer is very locked in behind the vehicle and that sucking over as a large vehicle goes past was non-existent, was very surprised and happy. I expected a little of this since this trailer is taller and longer than my last ones. Love being able to remove the equalizer bars and store in the trailer compartment without worrying about getting grease everywhere. Super easy to get hooked up and ready to go. I spent a few dollars more getting the SwayPro. Every extra dollar was worth every penny, this is a great hitch design with many advantages, wish this had been my first equalizer type hitch. 567629

I purchased the Blue Ox Sway Pro (15,000 lbs GTW) clamp on to pull my 14K tilt bed PJ T6 trailer. The trailer is a 6 inch C channel frame trailer. I worked with Troy who was very helpful and assured me that I would get the Blue Ox in time for a trip within the next 4 days. The shipping was very fast and I received it in just 2 days. However, I did not understand the clamp on set up is only for box framed trailers. Therefore the clamp on lift brackets would not work correctly. I did not see this information anywhere on the site regarding which trailer frame type is right for the various setups (box or C channel). I called Etrailer after finding this out and was told I could purchase the bolt on lift brackets separately but I would basically eat the ones I had. So my weight distribution hitch would now cost me NOT HAPPY. Be sure to ask about the type of lift bracket attachment for your trailer frame type. 438432

I purchased this hitch system to pull a 10,500 pound V-nose enclosed 8.5'x28' - 8' high trailer. I had to purchase the 1500 pound tongue weight system and because of the cargo that's loaded. I had to cut off 3 inches of the bottom of the receiver, because it hung down to low. I pull all of this with the 2016 ford F150 Max trailer package which sits lower than a heavy duties, that's where I attribute having to cut off 3 inches because it was scraping into the ground as I drove. Other than that issue this hitch system all but removes every bit of sway up to approximately a 45 mile an hour side wind. It is so simple to back up with the system as well, not having to remove the bars is awesome. If you are trailering anything with the F1 50 you should also purchase a spring package for the rear leaves to help with the tongue load is well. Now that we worked The bugs out it is a great system and will continue to use this on all trailers until something better comes along, I could not recommend this enough !!!! 421202

Easy to install. I was very curious as to how this would work as both a weight distributing hitch and sway control all in one. I was very surprised. I have used it on 3 trips on a 4 lane highway at highway speeds and with being passed and passing tractor trailers, it performed extremely well. I would recommend to anyone wanting a weight distributing hitch and sway control in one unit. 350658

I just received this yesterday, and will be using it this weekend to tow a 34 1/2' Toy Hauler home from Virginia. It is extremely heavy/well made and the powder coating looks like it was applied very well. Should be a great W.D. hitch system that will last for many years 310976

We have a 24' travel trailer pulled by a Suburban. This hitch levels everything out and makes handling much easier. Very little sway, only during windy storms and the suburban is much easier to drive. This hitch is also easy to set up (we were lucky to have a local store install it) and very well built. Etrailer delivered it fast, no damage and had the best price by far. 524533

I have had the Blue Ox 2,000 lbs WD hitch for a little over 1 year. My previous WD hitch was under capacity based on the tongue weight of my 37 ft travel trailer. This hitch has greatly improved the pulling stability of my trailer over the previous set-up. It has exceeded my expectations. 451573

Review from a similar Blue Ox SwayPro in Weight Distribution

Finally got around to installing the Blue Ox Sway Pro hitch with bolt on chain latches. The process was straight forward after viewing youtube vids, taking time to be sure all my measurements were correct. With the bolt on chain latches you do not get many chances to get it right. I could not use clamp on as my V-nose RV did not have room above the frame to clear the clamp on latch.. drilling was a pain as clearances on my frame were tight and I had to go around a electrical junction box on the inside of the frame.. but once on, it was a breeze to set up. The overall quality of the hitch was great and I don't miss having to set the angle of the hitch head (it's fixed) making the only adjustments necessary was hitch height and chain length. I initially set mine up using 9 links on the chain, but once I got out on the road, I noted the RV was riding nose low so I went up to 10 links on the chain. Now the truck and RV are level, the truck rides and handles as I expected. I have not had the rig out on a long haul, so I can't comment about the sway control of the hitch.Truck is a 2013 Ford F150 ecoboost, max tow 3.73 gears, rv is a 6600lb (empty) V-nose 25ft toy hauler. I like the chain latch set up. Easy to use especially on a V-nose trailer. The concept of sway control with the short length chain is feasible and after this week trip (with some interstate time), I will report back if it doesn't work as advertised. All in all I am happy with the hitch and of course happy with the eTrailer purchasing process. 102170

A year later and we have used this hitch many, many times and couldnt be happier with the purschase. Hook up is a breeze. Have had the chance on several occasions to get on the Interstate with the big trucks and wind and the sway control works. I am very pleased with the hitch. Thanks Blue Ox and eTrailer!

This weight distribution system is the best. It is easy to install and if you need to put it on a different trailer that has a different weight you just have to buy new distribution bars. 78458

Review from a similar Blue Ox SwayPro in Weight Distribution

Bought the Sway Pro to replace a hitch that had separate sway control. The Blue Ox works better on the road as trucks pass us and I really like backing up without loosening the sway friction. This Blue Ox WDH does not come with a ball. Had to have U-Haul tighten the 50mm nut on the 2 5/16” ball. Odd torque value for the hitch bolts too? Etrailer matched the prices and delivered in TWO days! 447330

Review from a similar Blue Ox SwayPro in Weight Distribution

Have used the SwayPro for 1 year now and overall very satisfied. I tow a 23' Airstream which weighs about 5500 lbs. The receiver hitch mount that comes with the SwayPro was unable to get the ball low enough as instructed in the Install Instructions so I gave Blue Ox a call and they immediately shipped out the one I needed and I shipped them the original. The BO SwayPro is fairly easy to operated and is quiet. I will say that it does not eliminate sway, I have tried several different adjustments but anytime I drive above 65mph, especially in headwinds or gusty conditions, sway is possible. The sway is manageable by slowing and never gets too bad but it will make you grip the steering wheel tighter. I was not surprised by this, just had a hard time shelling out the $2500 needed for the non-swaying hitches. 407456

Comments
The Blue Ox is performing fine, it does not eliminate sway but as long as I drive 65 mph or less, sway is rarely an issue. As you go over 65 sway can happen with adverse winds, semis passing, or poor road conditions. One other nuisance, is when I attempt to disconnect the chain on the right side, the chain sometimes gets wedged in the metal channel that you rotate and will not release. Usually I have to spray the area with a lubricant and then rotate the whole “chain engaging device” back and forth and the chain will become unstuck so that I can get the bar off. All else is fine, sometimes I do wish I had bought the Pro Pride but that seems a bit too complicated, heavy and expensive.

Review from a similar Blue Ox SwayPro in Weight Distribution

Well built product-solid product! My friend highly recommended this Blue Ox Sway Bar. I seen it on his truck when he came to our camp. I didn't have one. I'll be using this sway bar real soon. USA made...I hope? No Blue Ox Bull - from China. Keep on working hard, Ron 67772

  • Best Weight Distribution With Sway Control for Trailer With 1,100 lbs Total Tongue Weight
The BlueOx SwayPro # BXW1506 is a good system but I recommend the Reese Strait-Line # RP66130 over it. While both systems will be less noisy than the Equal-i-zer you referred to, the Strait-Line has the advantage because of its sway control system. The SwayPro uses a 4-point sway control system like the Equal-i-zer but the Strait-Line uses a dual cam system to prevent sway. This system's spring bars are suspended by this cam system (see accompanying photo) which ensures that the Strait-Line...

  • Recommended Weight Distribution System for a 2014 Airstream International
In order to choose the correct weight distribution system for your 2014 Airstream International and your 2016 Ford F-250 we will need to find your total tongue weight (TTW). Total tongue weight is calculated by adding the loaded ready to tow tongue weight of the trailer to any cargo stored behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. As long as your total tongue weight does not exceed 1,000 lbs then I recommend using the Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution w/ Sway Control part # BXW1006....

  • Will the 7-Hole Blue Ox Weight Distribution Shank Fit my 2017 Ford F-250
When measuring for the correct weight distribution shank, you need to measure from the ground to the top of the inside edge on your truck's trailer hitch receiver, not the bottom. With that being said I can assume that the above distance on your truck is around 20-1/2". Therefore, you need a weight distribution shank with a rise of 3/4". The 7-hole shank included with the Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution w/ Sway Control part # BXW1000 has up to an 8" rise so there won't be any issues....

  • Correctly Rated Weight Distribution System for Travel Trailer with 8,600 lb GVWR
The correct weight distribution system for you is going to be the Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution w/ Sway Control # BXW1506 which is rated for total tongue weights (TTW) between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. The reason for this is the ideal system would be one in which your TTW would fall somewhere in the middle of the weight distribution system's tongue weight capacity and TTW is the tongue weight of your fully loaded and ready to go trailer plus the weight of any cargo behind the rear...

  • Suspension Enhancement for 2018 Ram 1500 to Reduce Rear Squat
The Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System # TDR1500DQ referenced in your question will do a really nice job of reducing that rear squat you're getting on your Ram 1500 when hooked up to the Coachman Trailer. Jounce-style springs like this will provide a bit more support than an air spring system so this will be your best option. I have attached an installation video on the 2017 Ram 1500 that you can use for reference. You will not need any additional spacers when installing the...

This will provide you with a tongue weight capacity range of 1,000 to 1,500 pounds, so even when you are on the low end of your potential tongue weights, the system will still work nicely and be within its operating range. This particular kit includes 2 spring bars, lift chains and the necessary hardware. I have attached a short video demonstration...

  • Blue Ox Weight Distribution for an 8,700 Pound Travel Trailer
To choose a weight distribution system you will need to go by the total tongue weight of the set up. This is calculated by taking the tongue weight of the trailer, when loaded and ready to tow, and adding to that the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. Trailer tongue weight alone is usually 10 to 15 percent of the gross trailer weight. So on a trailer that weighs 8,700 pounds that would be a tongue weight of 870 to 1,305 pounds. Based on this a 1,000 pound...

If this is the case then you can use it to pull your trailer with a gross trailer weight of 7,000 lbs however, the system will not perform as well as one more accurately rated for the weight of the trailer.
