This soft top was a nightmare to put together and install. The directions were a joke. The canvass tolerance to the frame was ridiculous. It was so tight that it was near impossible to fit the windows and zip them in. The back window I could not zip the sides in and still cannot because it is so tight. The side panels were near impossible to stretch and push the flat holders into the slots. It took myself and my wife 5 hours to build and install this thing and I managed to sprain my wrist trying to stretch canvass to fit. I have installed other soft tops on previous trucks and this one was the worst.
The outlander cover is undoubtably one of the best available options for a soft topper without getting too close to a hardshell price point. The one we got was used and did not have all the hardware for the bulkhead rail but a quick trip to get some small screws fixed that. The rear "hatch" is obnoxious to open and close too frequently; but for keeping items out of the elements on long trips and only really getting in the bed to load and unload at destinations, the flap isn't enough of a burden to be a deal breaker. We used some J hooks to store it vertically in the garage when not in use to avoid premature wear just driving locally, but I have seen reviews online where other jeep owners have used their full time, one for 7 years and the wear is in line with the expectation for a high-quality soft top.
All indications so far are that this canvas topper will be exactly what I need. It was definitely difficult to install. The zippers/velcro closures could be designed better, but once I finally got them on, it works. Very solid construction. 2 things still need to be tested on my truck: driving in wet weather, and unzipping the windows/folding up the topper to open the bed of the truck. I'll try to update after I've experienced those.
The topper appears to be very good quality. It was harder to assemble than I’d anticipated, after watching the install videos. (It would have been nice if they showed more detail on steps like dealing with rails that are wider than the bed box). The canvas fit very tightly, which is not a bad thing, but it made zipping the side panels in tricky. This is definitely a two person job to install. I took the truck through the car wash a few days after the install, and only saw a small amount of water come in through the tailgate seal. That was impressive for a soft top. I’m very happy with the appearance.
I am very happy with the Outlander. I was a bit nervous about going with a soft top vs a fiberglass camper shell, but I couldn't be happier. Here are my thoughts:
Pros:
-Great fit, fits just like a factory Jeep soft top in my opinion.
-Price, a third the cost of a hard topper
-No LEAKS!! I took this on a trip up to Mount Rushmore and drove through several storms and everything stayed dry. I was a little worried about leaks with a soft top with zippers, but the zippers are well protected
-Quality, this feels just like a quality Jeep soft top in my opinion
-Versatility, the zip-away side panels are really nice. You can reach into your bed from the sides which isn't common with soft tops.
Cons:
-Tight install. If you can let the fabric lay out in the sun or warm up for a bit before installation, it may go smoother. The fit was tight, but I expected that and prefer a tight fit versus a loose fit because everything will loosen up over time
-Rear door, when you close the rear door, it is held in place with a friction fit. The fit was very tight, but once you get it in there, you are not worried about it coming out at all.
