Video Transcript for Detailed Breakdown of the Curt 7-Way RV-Style Trailer Connector

Speaker 1: Today we're taking a look at the Curt Seven Way RV Style Trailer Connector for the trailer end. This seven way RV style trailer end connector would hard wire to your trailer's wiring and then plug in to the seven way on your vehicle.Has a really nice easy grip design, allows for simple plug in and disconnect. It's made from a durable molded plastic construction. Your trailer wiring hard wires to each terminal located inside the connector. To gain access to those, you need to undo this screw right here. That allows the unit to pull apart, and then you can connect each wire to each corresponding terminal. Now the unit does feature corrosion resistant terminals to withstand the elements.

Once you have everything connected, you would reassemble the unit together and then located right here, you would tighten this screw, which creates a tight seal around the wiring and also functions as a strain relief bracket, reducing the amount of stress placed on each connection terminal. That's going to do it for today's look at Curt Seven Way RV Style Trailer Connector for the trailer end.

I chose this connector because it had the capability to seal the wire leaving the connector. Some of the other designs I've seen did not offer this feature and being this was installed on a trailer used in Michigan...in the winter time...lots of salt spray, I wanted to protect the inside of the connector from corrosion. While the connector is well made and robust, I think the seal leaves a little to be desired. You can see from the pictures that I modified the wire exit using silicone sealant. I used black electrical tape around the body of the connector to seal the area where the screw is located. I haven't taken the connector apart since installing it (Summer 2019) but so far, the lights work consistently on the trailer. I did notice some light corrosion on the blades of the connector which is shown in one of the pictures. I think this is easily removed by inserting and removing the connector a few times when getting ready to use the trailer.

Nice sturdy connector and worked perfect. Easy to grip and unplug. Heres a photo of the plug during assembly. Just unscrew it to take apart the plug, add your wires, then put back together. Simple.

by:

Took a little while to install but easy to do. The first time I wired it wrong but that is on me. Everything works like it should.

Perfect plug

This is the only 7 pin trailer connector out there I have found that doesn't have the connection end loosen or pull out from being plugged and unplugged from the tow vehicle. Most have the end plug portion only held in place by a small set screw in a flimsy and brittle plastic housing. This connector has two halves that clamp shut around the plug end and hold it 360 degrees. I have switched two of my trailers to this connector, and I expect much more life out of it.

by:

Most connectors for the trailer end hold the inner plastic piece and outer body together with just a small set screw, causing it to crack after little use plugging and unplugging tight connections.

This is the only plug I have found that holds up well with regular use. It uses two halves of the outer shell to clamp the inner piece. I will never buy a different plug as long as these are made. I have switched two of my trailers to these and they have both been on for 2 years or so. Previously I would be lucky to use another style of plug 1 year before a failure.

We have been struggling to find the right plug for our camper. We are new at this. Finally I stumbled across this website, put in the exact information on my camper title and all these parts pop up. I ordered the plug it said I needed and all the bells and whistles turned on. We are so happy! Now off to camp! Thank you

by:

Set screw is not good. It would also have help to have some instructions and an easy to see wiring diagram. I took apart a molded connector to figure it all out. Diagrams on the web are all different! Up and down and view directions are not well explained. Anyway it is installed and works.

  • What Gauge Wire Should be Used for 12 Volt Accessory Circuit of 7-Way
You'll want to use 10 gauge wire like part # 10-1-1 (sold by the foot) for the power and ground circuit of a 7-way accessory circuit. I attached a diagram that shows how 7-ways normally are wired for you to check out as well. The center pin could definitely be used as a power circuit like you need but normally it's the 1:00 position circuit that's used for that and then the ground is in the 7:00 position.

  • Comparing the Wesbar LED and Incandescent Agriculture Trailer Light Kits
The price difference between The Wesbar LED Light kit # 54003-041 and the Wesbar Incandescent Light Kit # W002676 is due to the cost of producing LED lights versus incandescent light bulbs. LED light are quite a bit more expensive to make than incandescent lights. That being said, LED lights will last longer and use less power than their incandescent counter parts, so I do suggest going with the LED option. It should be noted that both the LED # 54003-041 and Incandescent # W002676 will...

  • Wiring In a Curt 7-Way Trailer Plug In Place Of a Wesbar 4-Way Trailer Connector
To wire in the Curt 7-Way RV-Style Trailer Connector # C58145 you will need to match the wiring with their function and not rely on color. I have included an image that shows where the wiring goes on the connector below. Your Wesbar connector will have the white wire for a ground connector, the brown wires are the tail & running lights, the green will be your right turn and stop and the yellow will be the left turn and stop.

  • Intermittent Trailer Brakes
Hello Nathan, Thank you for your purchase from etrailer of the Draw-Tite Brake Controller # TK63VR. For intermittent brake controller operation like yours, the ground is certainly the first thing I'd look at. If you hardwired the controller, make sure the ground to the negative battery terminal is solid and not potentially loose. The other thing that may be happening is an issue with the 7-way connectors. Often, corrosion or dirt may be the cause of a short in a trailer connector. Check...

  • Powered Side Mount Trailer Jack that Can Power From a 7-Way
For a powered trailer jack that attaches to the side of the trailer frame the Fulton XLT part # F141401 would work really well. Then to power it from a 7-way you'd just need to wire the jack to a 7-way plug like the Curt 7-Way part # C58145 which you could plug in as needed.

  • Do Trailer Side 7-Way Plugs Have Metal Tabs in Middle
Trailer side 7-ways (attached to the trailer) have a single metal tab in the middle of them, and there isn't an option for one with double tabs. A vehicle-side 7-way (which is attached to the vehicle) does have two metal tabs in the middle, which accept the trailer-side 7-way's tab. For a replacement, you can use just a plug or you can use a 7-way with the wires attached, which is a plug and lead. - Plug Only: Curt 7-Way RV-Style Trailer Connector - Trailer End # C58145 - Plug and Lead:...
