Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Installation - 2015 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

Speaker 1: Today on our 2015 Mercedes ML Series, we're going to be installing the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Class III 2-1/2" trailer hitch receiver, part number 76141. This is what our hitch is going to look like when it's installed. The crossbar's going to be mostly hidden behind the bumper, so you're only going to be able to see the receiving tube and safety chain sticking out the back. It doesn't detract from the looks of the vehicle. This is going to be a Class III 2" by 2" receiver. It's going to be able to handle just about anything you need, whether it's for a ball mount to tow your trailer, bike racks, cargo carriers or any of your other favorite accessories.

A hitch pinning clip's not included but you can pick one up here at etrailer.com using part number PC3. It also supports the use of a J pin, which is a pin that goes through your hole that you normally would use 5/8" and has a smaller hole here for the other end of the J. It presses against whatever item you have in your receiver, making it an anti-rattle device. It features loop style safety chain hooks with a nice wide opening, so it should be able to accommodate just about any style chain, even these large ones here.It features a 700 pound tongue weight, which is the force going down on top of your receiver and a 7,000 pound gross towing capacity, which is the amount that it can pull behind it. It also supports the use of a weight distribution system.

You can find out more on how weight distribution system operates and effects the handling of your vehicle here at etrailer.com. And while using a weight distribution system, the tongue weight and gross trailer capacities are going to remain the same. And now I've got some measurements to help you when deciding on accessories. From the ground to the top inside edge of the receiving tube, it's going to measure about 13-1/2". This is important when deciding if you need a raised or lowered shank.

And from the center of the hitch pin hole to the edge of the bumper, it's going to measure about 6". And this is important when deciding if you need an extension and whether or not any of your folding accessories will operate without contacting the bumper. There are multiple options for ML Class Mercedes. If you have the Bluetec model, you'll have an additional DEF tank located in the passenger rear section that you'll have to lower down so you can install your hitch. However, ours isn't a Bluetec here, so we don't have to worry about it. If you need some additional information on how to lower your DEF and work around that, please refer to one of our other videos here at etrailer.com, such as the 2013 ML Class installation.

We'll begin our installation under the rear bumper by removing the four bumper support bolts. We'll remove these with a 10mm socket. And now we're going to need to remove the brackets completely. If you look up above each bracket, you'll see that there's two nuts on the outer plastic brackets and there's one on your center plastic bracket. You'll use a 10mm socket and ratchet to get up in there and take those off. After all your nuts are off, just slide the brackets off their studs and slip them down. Repeat that for both plastic brackets on each side and your center bracket. And now we'll set our brackets and hardware aside because we won't be reinstalling them. Next we'll need to lower our exhaust. Before we lower it, we're going to want to put in some support straps to make sure that our exhaust doesn't fall too far to where it may cause some damage. To lower the exhaust, you'll need to remove its hangers. There's one located on your passenger's side and on your driver's side. Spray it with some lubrication to make it easier to come off and then just use a pry bar or you could use an exhaust hanger removal tool. And make sure you do that to both sides. We'll then have to lower down our heat shield here. To get your heat shield off, you'll need to remove your rubber hanger completely. Next we'll need to lower down our heat shield. There will be six small nuts and two torx head bolts. To remove the torx head bolts, you can use an E10 socket or an 8mm socket. Your small nuts here will be removed with an 8mm socket. Now all the bolts have been removed, just work the heat shield around and drop it off the bottom. We'll now need to remove both of our lower bumper bolts. You'll use a 16mm socket and there'll be two bolts on each side. Remove all four bolts. Next we'll trim our heat shield following down along the rearmost portion of the heat shield. You'll see one of the bolt hole locations where our torx bolt heads were. We'll be trimming all of this off, just follow right along there. Then you can use a pair of tin snips or a grind wheel to cut through your heat shield. After you get it cut off, it's not a bad idea to take a file and just clean up those edges so they're not so sharp, so you don't cut yourself going back together. We can now reinstall our heat shield back up over our exhaust. We can now take the small nuts that we removed from our heat shield and reinstall them. We will not be reinstalling the two rearmost torx bolts. Before putting hitch into place, it's a good idea to take a putty knife and clean off all the sealant that runs between your bolts here, so you can more easily get your hitch up and get your nuts started. Now we've got an extra set of hands to help us lift our hitch into place. And then I'll slide our hitch up down to the studs where our bumper nuts came off. And once you've got your hitch slid onto your lower bumper studs, take the nuts that you removed earlier, that came with the vehicle and thread them on. Once you get one started on each side, you can begin to tighten them down and get the rest on. You'll be replacing a total of four nuts. Now this is a really tight fit getting this up over these studs and getting the studs started. It is important that you cleaned off that material behind it. If you're still having trouble getting a nut started, you can use a pair of vice grips to help squeeze it against your bumper there to bring that stud out a little further to get a nut on. One you get one on each side, slowly start drawing them down and that'll pull it in, make it a lot easier from there. Now we can secure our supporting plate in the back. We'll slide it up just up against our hitch here and it's going to be behind our rear axle.Slide the carriage bolts provided in the kit though the lower holes in your hitch. Then we'll slide our conical tooth washer with the teeth facing towards the head of the carriage bolt and a nut. And we'll do the same on our other bolt. Take the long hex head bolts provided in the kit and slide a conical tooth washer on with the teeth facing away from the head of the bolt. And slide it through your backing plate all the way through your rear axle. Do the same on the other upper hole. You may have to pull down slightly to get them to go through. Then on the other side, we can take our plate, slide it up on the end of the two bolts we just pushed through. Then take a conical tooth washer with the teeth facing towards your axle, slide it on the end of your bolt followed by a nut. And then do the same on your other bolt. Now go back and tighten down all your hardware here using a 19mm socket. You may also need a 19mm wrench to tighten your upper bolts, to hold those while you tighten them down.Using the torx head bolts removed previously, reinstall them through the lower portion of your hitch into the existing weld nuts. Then you can go back and tighten those down with an 8mm socket. Repeat this on the other side. Now go back and torque all of your hardware for the specifications in your instructions. Torque these using a 16mm socket. Now that our hitch is all torqued down, we're ready to put our exhaust back up, so we'll take our hangers, use a little bit a spray lube on them and they just slip right back on over the ends there. Kind of work them back and forth while pushing inward. And do the same up here at the other end. Now repeat that on the other side. Now you can remove the strap that you put in place earlier. Now take the cable ties provided in your kit, go through the opening on your bumper tab, go around your hitch and secure it to your hitch. This'll help minimize any noise or vibration that can occur, since the bolts are no longer attached. And do the same thing on the other side and in the other hole that you have along your bumper here. And that completes our installation of Draw-Tite Max-Frame Class III 2" trailer hitch receiver on our Mercedes ML Series.

Great product. And very fast shipping. However the packaging was torn and the hitch was exposed during transport cause minor scuffs and scratches. Overall a great product and cosmetic damage does not bother me! 607343

We generally recommend using a high quality spray paint as a rust prevention measure on those scratches.

Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • Trailer Hitch Availability for 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class
  • If your 2016 Mercedes-Benz is a GLE 350 (and does NOT have the Active Curve System) then Curt does offer a hitch fit in a 2-inch Class III type, part # C13294. Draw-Tite also offers a 2-inch hitch for this vehicle, part # 76141. Both hitches are no-drill installs with included hardware, but both are fairly involved. I have linked the instructions for both hitches for your review. These also indicate the tools required. If your 2016 is not a GLE 350 please let me know the specific version...

  • Best Towing Setup for 2018 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class
  • To start your towing prep I recommend Draw-Tite's Class III hitch # 76141 for your GLE350 that does NOT have the Active Curve System. This will bolt on using the included hardware and you can figure on a little more than an hour to complete the install. An install video for an M-Class is linked for reference. For a ball mount and hitch ball I recommend the multi-fit kit # 989900 which has 2 hitch balls and 2 ball mounts for towing flexibility. For a basic 4-pole trailer harness use ZCI...

  • Towing Capacity of 2013 Mercedes-Benz ML350
  • I took a look at the online owner's manual for your 2013 Mercedes-Benz ML350 and found that the vehicle has a 529 pound tongue weight capacity and a 6,613 pound towing weight capacity. I highly recommend verifying this information in your copy of the owner's manual, as its possible you have a slightly different model. If you do not yet have a trailer hitch installed, I recommend the Draw-Tite Class III Max Frame Receiver Hitch # 76141 (as long as you do not have the Active Curve System)....

The Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver Class III - 2", # 76141, is a great hitch for your application that requires no drilling. There are some installation tips to be aware of however, the exhaust will need to be temporarily lowered and the heat shield must be modified or trimmed. Removal of bumper fascia brackets is required and the fascia will be secured to hitch body. The ZCI Circuit Protected Vehicle...

  • What is Active Curve System on 2018 Mercedes GLE350
  • The Active Curve System on a 2018 Mercedes GLE350 has to do with your suspension; it basically stabilizes your ride but does not have anything to do with your headlights. This is an option with this vehicle so you would likely know if you have it but I recommend a quick call to your Mercedes dealer with your VIN to find out for sure. If you do NOT have the Active Curve Suspension then you would be able to install the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver # 76141 on your '18 Mercedes GLE.
