Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2015 Chevrolet Equinox - Draw-Tite

Today in our 2015 Chevrolet Equinox, we'll be having a look at, and installing, the Draw-Tite Class III Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number 76028. All right, here's what our hitch looks likes installed. As you see, it fits in nicely behind where the cover was in our fascia. When you're standing behind the vehicle, the majority of the hitch frame will be hidden behind your fascia. Now if you look over towards the side of our receiver, we'll see that we have two pin holes. The one closes to the front is our larger, 5/8" diameter hitch pin hole, to secure any hitch mounted accessories that we may have. The one closest to the rear of the vehicle is our J-Pin stabilization device hole.

J-Pin stabilization device is a separate device, which we have available on our website if you need one. What they do is, they take away some of that annoying shake, play, and rattle out of what's inserted in your receiver, if your hitch mounted accessory doesn't already have an anti-rattle device built in. Now, on the bottom of our receiver, welded on, are a rolled steel safety chain loops, which have a fairly decent size opening, which should make it easy for us to clip on any of our safety chains from our trailers. This hitch features a 675 pound max gross tongue weight rating, which is the amount forcing down, and a 4,500 pound max gross trailer weight rating, which is the amount we can pull. It does support a use of weight distribution, but those numbers don't change, they stay the same. You wanna make sure you consult with the owner's manual of your Equinox, and not exceed the capacity of the vehicle tow ratings when you're towing a trailer.

You don't wanna tow more than what the vehicle's rated for, or what the hitch is rated for. You don't wanna cause damage to either one. What I really like about this hitch, compared to other hitches for the Equinox out there, is how well it looks underneath the vehicle. It's a nice, clean look; almost looks like the factory hitch, so it blends in nicely with your vehicle. It also has the weight distribution rating, and the J-Pin hole, which gives us a lot of versatility when using our hitch for recreational usage. Now for a few measurements to better assist you in choosing any hitch mounted accessories that you may need, such as a ball mount, bike rack, or a cargo carrier.

You're looking at about 14 1/2" from the ground to the top of the 2" receiver opening, and about 6" from the hitch pin hole to the remotest part of the back bumper. Now that we've gone over some features, we'll show you how to get it installed. All right, the first thing we need to do before we install our hitch, is locate our rear fascia door. Okay, on the underside of our fascia we'll find a tab at each corner of our door, we squeeze the tab in with a pair of needle nose pliers so we can pull down on it. Then we can grab our door, pull back and down away from our vehicle, and it comes off. Okay, now we're on the driver's side of our vehicle, our passenger side of the vehicle will be the exact same, so we'll just repeat the same process that we do one side, on the other. We're gonna do what's called a reverse fish wire technique.

On the bottom of our frame rail, towards the end, near our bumper, we find a large oval access hole. So we'll take one of our fish wires, our bar or spacer block, stick it on the wire, thread on a carriage bolt, take the bolt inside our hole, followed by the block, pull the bolt on down, and we can remove our pull wire. Okay, now what we're gonna do is standard pull wire technique. On our rear bumper beam we'll find two round holes. So we'll take our pull wire and we'll insert it into that hole, like so, then we look at the other side of our bumper beam, over here, right above our exhaust tip, our pull wire will come out there, and that is where we'll place on our small block, and then our carriage bolt, and then pull it in through that hole. Now additionally, on each side of our frame rail, we'll find two well nuts that we will use to secure our hitch up with bolts, once you've raised it into position. Okay, now when we raise our hitch up, the bolts that we installed in our frame rail we will install with a conical tooth washer and a nut. The teeth of the washer will face straight up towards the hitch. Now, with an extra set of hands we'll raise the hitch in position, and secure it with our hardware. Okay, I have all of our hardware in place, we'll start to tighten it down using an 18 mm socket for the bolts. All right, now we'll torque all of our hardware to the amount specified in the instructions. And that completes our look at, and installation of, the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Class III Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number 76028, on our 2015 Chevrolet Equinox.

I received the product as expected and on time. The nice thing about ordering through etrailer is there is never any guessing on your order status. Prompt emails and follow ups always let you know when your product will be shipped and if anything is on back order. I have had to contact etrailer customer service (because of an error I made) and dealing with Amanda was fantastic. There was no deep accented male named "Becky" answering the call. Amanda was very polite, educated in product knowledge and answered every question without making me feel like it was the dumbest thing she's heard. Thank you etrailer, Paul 10785

I was very impressed with e-trailers willingness to exceed expectations. I placed my order late at night and within 7 hours I had received an email indicating my purchase had been shipped and the shipping method had been upgraded for free to cut the delivery time down a couple of days. The install was a little more difficult than what e-trailer had made it out to being. Not that it was any more complicated, but the wires they provide in order to fish the bolts through the bumper are inadequate and in my case would have been impossible to do. I ended up using my own fish tape to pull the bolts through. However once that was done, the install went extremely smooth. I am very happy with my purchase, and I would definitely recommend e-trailer to anyone looking to purchase from them. 125454

I installed the 76028 on a 2017 GMC terrain in 45 minutes with no problems.I cut out the access panel a little different than the instructions showed for a more hidden look. The ball mount locking pin and safety chains install with no problem with access panel cut as in the photo and give the hitch a clean hidden look.Would recommend this hitch for any one wanting to add a hitch to a GMC Terrain ,well built and easy to install! 439320

The quality of the hitch is very high and it's fit to my vehicle perfect with all installation holes a brackets lining up perfectly. I will stress the need to get an M12 tap and chase (re-tap) the weldnuts in the vehicle body. The vertical holes, because they do not hold dirt and water, required only brushing out. However, without tapping the horizon holes (2 on each side) the bolts were not going in. Temporary use coiled wires worked like a charm for installing blind bolts. Have a partner install nuts on the blind bolts while you steady the hitch. Installing at least bolt in the middle loose helps hold up the hitch. Start all bolts by hand before tightening any bolt/nut. Be sure to use a torque wrench...what your hand thinks is tight is a long way from the required bolt load. 141812

75681 seems to be a fine product. I really like the extra strength of the 75681. The only thing which I would suggest for consideration would be for the addition of 2 (two) more Pull Wires. The Pull Wires are a great idea and a real time and trouble saver. My installation required the use of the 2 (two) Carriage Bolts and the 2 (two) 1-1/2 x 2 (Small Blocks) for the Bumper Mounting Bracket. I did my installation on my driveway. A small hydraulic jack was very helpful in lifting the receiver socket towards the frame while installing the Bumper Mounting Bracket Hex Nuts and Conical Washers. The installation did require me more than 40 (forty) minutes. The online installation videotape was very informative and helpful. This was a very smooth project. Thank You! John M. Habak 95168

I received the ordered hitch for my car right on time, but the box had taken a real beating where the flanges that attach to the frame rails had broken through the box Since I am by myself I needed to review the video that eTrailer had on the internet.Very good but I noted that when it came time to attach the hitch to the car the demo shows two people making the install!. wow now what do I do to get the hitch into place without losing the bolts back up inside the frame at the four points that the bolts just hang in place. So, I figured out a way to balance the hitch on a floor jack( see picture) to slowly and careful to position the hitch up in position. Since I was nervous about losing the four free hanging carriage bolts back up inside the frame rail and bumper I left the pull wires on each of the carriage bolts and laced the wires through the hitch in each of the four location. When the hitch was up sufficient to pull the carriage bolts through the hitch four bolt location and then remove each pull wire as I was able to have sufficient bolt thread to attach the conical washers and Hex nuts before removing the floor jack and tighten ing the four carriage bolts to snug the hitch into the final position in order to install the two metric bolt on each outside of the existing weld nuts in the frame rail. All went well except the bolt in the lower position on the frame rail drivers side appears to have hit something in side the frame rail and was not able to be treaded completely into the tight position. When removing the m12x1.75 x 45 bolt the thread showed the roll over of the threads (see picture). Off to Ace's Hardware and a new bolt m12x1.75 x 30 to solve the problem. Over all the hitch fit just as designed and I am very pleased with the produce, and proved to myself that I could do the install by myself! Where there is a will there is a WAY ! 498736

Robert, thank you for your review. Over time grime can get into the weld nuts in your frame and harden over time. This will make it seem like the bolts supplied with your hitch are too large for your weld nuts. The good news is the weld nuts can be easily cleaned out. We do not recommend changing out the hardware. I have attached a link that will help you.

Provided bolts for the hitch to frame rail to the factory mounting points did not fit. Had to purchase the correct bolts adding additional cost to the hitch set up. Contacted etrailer and they said to try cleaning out the factory point that the bolts go into, after running a wire brush through I was able to tread a tap in and it was a completely different thread pitch than the provided bolts were. After getting the right bolts I was able to use the hitch and have been happy since. 561131

2017 Chevy Equinox trailer hitch - not only was the product well constructed, but the videos on installation take the guess work out of it. My hitch came with a damaged box and scratches on the paint. Concerned about rusting etrailer promptly sent another which arrived fast in good condition. The service on the phone was wonderful. The local U-Haul dealer was going to charge me $4$$ for the installation which included $1$$ for the wiring. My Equinox has the trailer wiring quick connect which took me 2 minutes to open and connect the harness. So my total with receiver and harness was $1$$. Compare that to the U-Haul $4$$ quote. It was a no brainer. I am telling many friends about trailer.com. Thank you for a great product and great service! 360922

Short of installing it's self my son-in-law and I installed this hitch for my 13 Chevy Equinox in just under an hour. The only tuff spot was the two bolts below the license plate on the frame. My compliments to Hidden Hitch and Chevy. Thank You etrailer.com for the ease of purchase and fast delivery. The item was well packed. 68341

What we did is use the fish wire and added a piece of wire to it. Then we fished the bolt and washer through the end of the tube and pulled the bolt through the drilled whole and then attached the nut, etc. I used needle nose pliers to grab the wire to pull through. Really wasnt that bad just caused a little head scratching. Hope this helped some.

Extremely well made. My only suggestion is based on install, this is for a car a decade old. Hit the install threads with a rust spray, get a wire brush in there (spark plug cleaners work well) Otherwise, install is a pain. Use a penetrating thread locker and not a setting one, due to the time to align and get all bolts seated it may inhibit setting all bolts. 576491

Chevrolet Equinox

From the time I placed my order to when I received my items, the whole process was pretty easy and quick. After watching the online video on how to install the hitch several times, the day finally came to install it. Had it not been for the snug fit, it definately makes the installation easier to have a second pair of hands! Luckily for me, since the hitch fit quite snuggly onto the frame of my Equinox, I was able to practically wedge it in place and it stayed up. I would say that the most difficult part of this installation was feeding the hardware fro the "front 2 bolts" through the bumper. On my first try on the driver side I lost the hardware 1/2 inside the bumper cavity. At first I paniced and decided to take a break. I proceeded to install the passenger side hardware and took my time and some extra jiggling to get the hardware to pass though. Luckily there was extra "feed" wire and I was able to use a magnet to retrieve the lost hardware. On my second attempt I was succesfull and was able to button up the install. Total install time was less than an hour!! Everything fit up nicely and worked like it should have. I'm impressed with how easy this was in install and how well the hitch fit the vehicle! Practically plug & play!! It really is as easy as it looked on the video! I was concerned at first because the box received a bit of damage from shipping but all the hardware was secured to the hitch and nothing was lost during shipping!! See attached pics. Once installed, this hitch isn't going ANYWHERE!! Very securely mounted and just a solid product! It practically becomes one with the vehicle. It will outlive the vehichle! 461505

2016 Chevrolet Equinox

I searched the internet to put a hitch on my 2016 Chevy Equinox and found an instructional video from eTrailer.com where they installed on my exact car. I decided to go with eTrailer.com because they answered all my questions and because of the video-I support businesses that go the extra mile with these videos. Shipping was quick and well tracked, however, the box was flimsy and the one end of the hitch had come out of the box side and the ball mount could have easily come out of that hole during shipping. If I were eTrailer.com I'd charge an extra couple of bucks for more sturdy boxes-people will still buy as eTrailer is a well-trusted brand and this would overcome a lot of the negative reviews you'll see on their site about this shipping issue in their own reviews :-) I installed the hitch by myself (definitely recommend help as two people holding it up to the frame makes attaching 100% easier) in about 45 minutes total (out of the box, read instructions, review video again and installation complete). All hardware went on with no issues. Great quality hitch! I also bought the lesser expensive wiring assembly because most recent equinox's come hitch ready with pre-wired assembly in the left side compartment-snap and done. Picked up a new trailer at Home Depot within days and drove 5 feet and the clacking was horrible. I had always had a welded hitch before buying a hitch that took a ball mount. I really thought something was wrong and when I searched the internet that night it turns out this is very common. However, all you need is some sort of hitch "silencing" device. The number of options will drive you mad but I went with the Roadmaster Quiet Hitch and it did the trick for much less than most of the other options. If I were eTrailer.com I'd have that as one of the RECOMMENDED add-ons and explanation why its super-worthy when customers are buying a hitch. Would have saved me the time and hassle of dealing with it later and the extra shipping charge for buying after the fact when I got free shipping for the other items the first time :-) All in all, I'm super, super happy with my hitch, wiring assembly, ball mount, ball mount locking pin and the hitch silencer. Wow delivered in 3 days and installed in a little over an hour. Had to grind down large spacers to fit into frame rather than enlarging the hole. Pull wires worked awesome. Install wasn't to bad it's a really good fit but work for 1 person but I won out in the end. Shipment arrived with tabs sticking out if the box no damage but some foam packing might help. Would recommend you guys anyway. 411611

The product arrived in two days. I liked the custom fit for my vehicle to facilitate installation. I installed the hitch by myself and the process took a total of four hours including the wiring, setup and cleanup. I installed the hitch in my driveway without a jack or jack stands. The included directions were clear and concise. I will be using the hitch to pull a small trailer for home project materials. Mulch, top soil, plants and maybe moving furniture for friends etc. Adding the hitch allows me to not have to ask a friend to use his vehicle and trailer when I have a need. This way I can operate on my own schedule since I retired in Oct. 2017. I would suggest that if one lives in an area where there is frequent snow and the roads are treated with rock salt to be diligent about cleaning out the pre-threaded holes where the hitch mounts. I actually had to run a tap through the threads. The wire brush method did not do the trick. Overall I look ahead to years of service from the hitch and am glad I bought it! Customer service was exceptional (Thanks Paula S) and I would recommend etrailer.com to my friends and family! 495864

Delivered in three days--Super! Everything packaged as ordered and, packed securely in shipping box. One of the larger holes--for the hitch pin--in the receiver was too small to get the hitch pin through: I had to ream it out a bit; debur the hole; then paint it. All else went perfectly. Thank you. 567269

Just finished up installing hitch #76028 on our 2014 Equinox. Will be towing a new Forest River Wolf Pup. Also have a Steadi-Flex weight distribution system ordered more on that later. As others have mentioned the packaging for shipping leaves something to be desired. The hitch arrived on time with the box badly broken, the hitch was scratched to bare metal in three places and one of the arms was bent. After straightening and painting it went on without a hitch. It took longer than anticipated due to having to first remove an old hitch, and that I am fussy. I took the opportunity to clean and paint the area where it mounts and to tap out all holes I think you should put a caution in your video about making your own tap that after each turn of the tap you should back up a quarter turn to clean out the threads, also DO NOT force the tap. Breaking the tap or the weldment loose makes for a LOT more work. The people I worked with to order were great and your website has a lot of good information. Will buy again and recomend to others 488175

To determine whether or not you will be able to pull your boat and boat trailer with your 2015 Chevrolet Equinox you will need to do a little bit of calculating. In an online version of the owners manual for your Equinox it says that the GCWR (Gross Combination Weight Rating) for a 4 cylinder is 5,787 lbs for a FWD and 5,952 lbs if it is AWD. I checked and the similar Curt # 13591 and etrailer.com # E98865 trailer hitches use M12x1.75x40 size bolts which means they are slightly shorter but not so much that it would affect anything. If you didn't already use some lubricant when you cleaned the weld nuts try spraying some WD40 in there and then letting it soak for a bit before cleaning...

  • Troubleshooting Trailer Hitch Bolts Not Fitting Weld Nuts on 2012 GMC Terrain
The Draw-Tite Class III Trailer Hitch Receiver # 76028 referenced in your question is confirmed to fit your 2012 GMC Terrain. Please just let me know if this is not the hitch model that you have. This particular hitch does include six M12x1.75x45 CL10.9 bolts for installation, so it appears that you received the correct size bolts. The issue you are experiencing is actually not terribly uncommon. The frame underneath your vehicle is constantly exposed to dirt and grind and this debris...

  • Towing Capacity of 2017 GMC Terrain with 4 Cylinder Engine
I took a look at the online owner's manual for your 2017 GMC Terrain. It states that the 2.4L L4 Engine model Terrain has a towing capacity of 1,500 pounds for trailers with brakes and 1,000 pounds for trailers without brakes. I do recommend verifying this in your copy of the owner's manual, as its possible that you have a slightly different model. If you do not yet have a trailer hitch installed on the vehicle, I recommend the Draw-Tite Class III Max Frame # 76028. This custom-fit,...

  • Installing Trailer Hitch on 2012 Chevy Equinox with Rusted Weld Nuts
Dirty and rusted weld nuts are actually not too uncommon, in fact we have a dedicated article on exactly this subject that I have attached. You will want start by cleaning them out with a spray lubricant (WD-40, etc) and a simple wire brush. You may need to do this a few times depending on how much grime and corrosion is built in. As for the nut that looks to be a bit stripped, your best option will be to use a screw tap like what you mentioned and see if you can then thread a bolt...

  • Why Would Trailer Hitch Install Hardware be Hard to Thread into Vehicle Weld Nut
For the hitches confirmed as a fit for your 2015 like the Draw Tite # 76028 the included bolts are size 1/2-13 x1.50 GR5 and M12x1.75x45 which is the same thread size as what you bought. Factory weld nuts notoriously get rust/dirt in them which prevents bolts from easily threading into them. Down below I attached a couple links that detail how to clean rusty or dirty weld nuts for you to check out as well.

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver for a 2017 GMC Terrain Denali
I recommend going with the Draw-Tite Max-Frame # 76028 because it has the highest weight capacities of 675 lbs Tongue Weight (TW) and 4,500 lbs Gross Trailer Weight (GTW). This hitch is confirmed to fit all models of the 2017 GMC Terrain and I have attached an installation video of this hitch installed on a 2016 Terrain with dual exhaust for you to check out. If you let me know what you will be using the hitch for I would be more than happy to make some more recommendations for you.

  • Troubleshooting Trailer Hitch Bolts Too Big for Weld Nuts on Vehicle
The Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver # 76028 that you referenced is confirmed to fit your 2014 Chevy Equinox. What you are experiencing is not too uncommon and it sounds like you may have already looked into the cause. On vehicles that have seen a few winters the weld nuts can get a bit of corrosion in them that prevents the included bolts on a trailer hitch from being able to thread. This can definitely make it look like the nuts are too small for the provided hardware. You...

  • Needing Trailer Wiring Harness for 2017 Chevrolet Equinox
The DrawTite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch, # 76028, for the 2017 Chevrolet Equinox does include the fish wires to install the bolts on the frame of your vehicle. For your wiring harness, there are two options. If you do not have the factory tow package, then you will need the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118494. The wiring harness is designed to plug into the existing wiring of the vehicle without cutting or splicing the original vehicle wiring. If you do have the factory tow package...

  • Draw-Tite vs. Curt Hitch on a 2013 GMC Terrain
In terms of quality both Draw-Tite and Curt make very reliable trailer hitches and honestly neither is going to wilt under the elements in the northeast U.S. When choosing a hitch what people generally look at is capacity and, like you asked, if modifications are going to be made to their vehicle. If I had a 2013 GMC Terrain, I would go with the Draw-Tite # 76028 over the Curt # 13591. The Draw-Tite has a higher tongue weight capacity and overall towing capacity than the Curt, If...

  • Trailer Hitch and Wiring Recommendation for 2017 GMC Terrain
For a hitch for your 2017 GMC Terrain I would recommend the Draw Tite part # 76028 which is a confirmed fit, with great towing capacities, and because it has the best price. For trailer wiring the Curt harness part # 56094 that you referenced is a confirmed fit, but I would rather see you use the Tekonsha part # 118494 as it has circuit protection built into it that the Curt does not. If you wanted to do some towing you might be interested in etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes...

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for 2015 Chevy Equinox
The best hitch for towing with a 2015 Chevy Equinox is the Draw Tite part # 76028 because it is priced the best and has the highest towing capacities. The hitch is rated for towing up to 4,500 lbs but you need to check the owners manual to determine if the vehicle has a lower capacity than that. You will need to go by the lowest rated component as the overall capacity. I attached an install video for you to check out as well. If you wanted to do some towing you might be interested in...

  • What Size Bolts Come with Trailer Hitch for 2014 GMC Terrain
The hitches like the Draw Tite part # 76028 for your GMC Terrain do come with install bolts that are size ½-13 x 1.50 GR5 and M12x1.75x45 CL10.9. We installed this hitch on a similar 2013 Terrain like yours with the included hardware that you can see at the attached install video link. We do see this problem pretty often and the solution is normally to clean the threads like you've done or use a thread tap to clean them out as the rust is very difficult to clean typically.

I've attached an installation video for you. There is no drilling required, but if you have the hands free lift-gate sensor, the areas away from the center where the receiver tube is will work. The area in the center will be limited due to the hitch shape. To add trailer wiring, I recommend the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole...

  • Recommended Towing Package For 2012 GMC Terrain
On your 2012 GMC Terrain, the towing capacity is indeed 1500 lbs maximum. For this vehicle, your camper will need to be less than 1500 lbs when fully loaded for camping. You do not want to operate outside of the manufacturers capacities on this as it could cause damage to your vehicle and create unsafe driving conditions. For a towing system if you don't already have one, I recommend the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class III - 2" # 76028 which is rated...
