Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2016 Chevrolet Equinox - Draw-Tite

Today in 2016 Chevrolet Equinox we're going to take a look at and also show you how to install the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Class 3 Trailer Hitch Receiver. This offers the 2" X 2" opening, part number is 76028. Here's what our hitch is going to look like installed. You can see most of it is going to be hidden in behind our rear fascia. We've left our panel off, you can trim it, however, you will be removing the majority of the panel. So, whatever look you can go for there, you can certainly go for it.

It's a nice easily installation of the hitch. Once installed you're going to have a very adaptable 2" X 2" receiver tube opening. This works out great with ball mounts, bike racks, cargo carriers, any number of things there. See we've got our reinforcement collar here at the end, it's going to have the rounded off design. Pin holes here, you can see the large pin hole closer to the front of the vehicle, that's the one we're going to use to secure all of our items with. It's 5/8 of an inch in diameter, plenty of room on each side for any Class 3 accessory you might choose to put on there.

One of those is the J-Pin stabilization system, it's an anti-rattle system designed for use with this hitch and that's when you actually use this forward hole. That would be the only application that'll come into play. Never want to use that to secure any other items. We're going to have the rolled steel stock style safety chain connection point here, plenty of room there so whatever kind of hook you're going to be attaching, shouldn't be an issue there whatsoever to get that hooked up. When it comes to your tow ratings or it comes to weight ratings on the hitch, we've got a 675 pound tongue weight rating, so that's the maximum downward force we can put here at our receiver tube opening. We've got a 4,500 pound gross trailer weight rating.

It's going to be the total weight of our trailer and anything that we we're to load up. If we move into a weight distribution setup, those numbers are going to stay the same, 675 for our tongue weight, 4,500 pounds for the gross trailer weight rating and, of course, we will want to check our owner's manual on the Equinox. We're going to see what it's rated for and we'll go off whichever of those numbers are the lowest. Now, a few measurements that are going to be helpful in selecting your ball mounts, bike racks or hitch cargo carrier. We'll be from the ground to the inside top edge of our receiver tube opening, we've got about 14-3/4". Then from the center of out hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of our bumper, it's about 3-1/4".

The first thing we're going to do for installation is get our weld nuts cleaned out. We'll start here on the passenger side. We want to go outside of the frame rail. We'll have two weld nuts right here on the side, one right on top of the other one. You see we've got one in here and then just above it right there. We're going to use a little bit of spray lubricant. Get one of our nylon tube brushes, this is 814092, just going to make sure these are nice and clean. That way our bolts will thread easily. Now we can head over to the driver's side, we're going to have these two in the exact same location there. Now, we've also go the little panel that's right here that we're going to remove. There are two tabs on the outside corner and we kind of push up on. You see how those just kind of come down and out, just like that. Kind of pull down and out across the rear here. If you need to, you can push in on the tabs on the inside here, but most of the time they come out without any issue. Now, we're going to take our carriage bolt, it's going to be threaded onto our pull wire. We're going to take our large spacer block and also place that on. The bolt's just going to go up and into the frame, follow that with our spacer block. We'll pull it down just like that. This is going to provide for one of our lower attachment points here. We need to go over to the passenger side and we'll repeat that exact same process there. Now we're going to look right up underneath the center of the rear fascia and you'll see your rectangular shaped holes and your round holes. We'll use our same pull wire, we're going to go through our round hole and then all the way out to the end of our bumper there. Come out right here without much issue. Now what we need to do is take one of the smaller spacer blocks and that needs to go on the wire and then we'll thread on one of our carriage bolts. Slide the spacer on the end of the bumper, slide our bolt in and then just pull them right on over and that's going to give us one of our rear attachment points. We'll do the same thing for this hole right here closer to the driver's side and we'll be ready to put our hitch in. Now, we're going to get our hitch raised up into position. It's a really good idea to get an extra set of hands to kind of help you. You just guide that driver's side up over the exhaust first. You can see this middle section if we just try to push up it's going to hit that fascia so we'll tuck it up behind. Then we just want to be careful not to push our carriage bolts that we've got installed up inside the frame. Then we're going to take our black bolts, we're going to push the conical tooth washer on those, we want the teeth of that washer to face in towards our hitch. Then those weld nuts on the side are a great spot to get a bolt started. Once we've got that started we're just going to let the hitch rest on that bolt. That will help us get the rest of our bolts into position. Just like before, we have our conical tooth washer that we're going to place up on the bolt. We'll use a hex nut. Now here at our center attachment points, we're going to do the same thing with the conical tooth washer, also one of our nuts. Kind of a tight squeeze to get your hand in there, but your fascia will come down enough. We have all our fasteners started, we just want to take a quick look to see that we've got our hitch centered here and then we'll start snugging those down. You can see you just kind of pull your fascia down to get to these. Now we want to look into our instructions and there we're going to find the torque specifications for our hardware. We'll go through and get everything torqued down properly. If you want this rear panel to go back on, you're going to have to trim it for our tabs to go back into their slots and to go back up here in the side. When you do trim it, however, you take out most of the material. We've decided and the customer also decided they really didn't want to trim the panel. This is just fine. Having this thing cut off, real long cut-outs all the way around, just doesn't look all that great on the back of the vehicle, but it is an option that you do have. With everything torqued to specification, that's going to complete our installation of the Draw-Tite Max-Frame custom fit Trailer Hitch Receiver. Part number is 76028., on our 2016 Chevrolet Equinox.

For my towing needs, this hitch has remained solid and reliable. It was a bit difficult for one person to install, but not impossible. No problems since installation. A nice hitch assembly. Worth the price!

I received the product as expected and on time. The nice thing about ordering through etrailer is there is never any guessing on your order status. Prompt emails and follow ups always let you know when your product will be shipped and if anything is on back order. I have had to contact etrailer customer service (because of an error I made) and dealing with Amanda was fantastic. There was no deep accented male named "Becky" answering the call. Amanda was very polite, educated in product knowledge and answered every question without making me feel like it was the dumbest thing she's heard. Thank you etrailer, Paul 10785

I was very impressed with e-trailers willingness to exceed expectations. I placed my order late at night and within 7 hours I had received an email indicating my purchase had been shipped and the shipping method had been upgraded for free to cut the delivery time down a couple of days. The install was a little more difficult than what e-trailer had made it out to being. Not that it was any more complicated, but the wires they provide in order to fish the bolts through the bumper are inadequate and in my case would have been impossible to do. I ended up using my own fish tape to pull the bolts through. However once that was done, the install went extremely smooth. I am very happy with my purchase, and I would definitely recommend e-trailer to anyone looking to purchase from them. 125454

75681 seems to be a fine product. I really like the extra strength of the 75681. The only thing which I would suggest for consideration would be for the addition of 2 (two) more Pull Wires. The Pull Wires are a great idea and a real time and trouble saver. My installation required the use of the 2 (two) Carriage Bolts and the 2 (two) 1-1/2 x 2 (Small Blocks) for the Bumper Mounting Bracket. I did my installation on my driveway. A small hydraulic jack was very helpful in lifting the receiver socket towards the frame while installing the Bumper Mounting Bracket Hex Nuts and Conical Washers. The installation did require me more than 40 (forty) minutes. The online installation videotape was very informative and helpful. This was a very smooth project. Thank You! John M. Habak 95168

The quality of the hitch is very high and it's fit to my vehicle perfect with all installation holes a brackets lining up perfectly. I will stress the need to get an M12 tap and chase (re-tap) the weldnuts in the vehicle body. The vertical holes, because they do not hold dirt and water, required only brushing out. However, without tapping the horizon holes (2 on each side) the bolts were not going in. Temporary use coiled wires worked like a charm for installing blind bolts. Have a partner install nuts on the blind bolts while you steady the hitch. Installing at least bolt in the middle loose helps hold up the hitch. Start all bolts by hand before tightening any bolt/nut. Be sure to use a torque wrench...what your hand thinks is tight is a long way from the required bolt load. 141812

Extremely well made. My only suggestion is based on install, this is for a car a decade old. Hit the install threads with a rust spray, get a wire brush in there (spark plug cleaners work well) Otherwise, install is a pain. Use a penetrating thread locker and not a setting one, due to the time to align and get all bolts seated it may inhibit setting all bolts. 576491

Short of installing it's self my son-in-law and I installed this hitch for my 13 Chevy Equinox in just under an hour. The only tuff spot was the two bolts below the license plate on the frame. My compliments to Hidden Hitch and Chevy. Thank You etrailer.com for the ease of purchase and fast delivery. The item was well packed. 68341

What we did is use the fish wire and added a piece of wire to it. Then we fished the bolt and washer through the end of the tube and pulled the bolt through the drilled whole and then attached the nut, etc. I used needle nose pliers to grab the wire to pull through. Really wasnt that bad just caused a little head scratching. Hope this helped some.

Delivered in three days--Super! Everything packaged as ordered and, packed securely in shipping box. One of the larger holes--for the hitch pin--in the receiver was too small to get the hitch pin through: I had to ream it out a bit; debur the hole; then paint it. All else went perfectly. Thank you. 567269

Provided bolts for the hitch to frame rail to the factory mounting points did not fit. Had to purchase the correct bolts adding additional cost to the hitch set up. Contacted etrailer and they said to try cleaning out the factory point that the bolts go into, after running a wire brush through I was able to tread a tap in and it was a completely different thread pitch than the provided bolts were. After getting the right bolts I was able to use the hitch and have been happy since. 561131

2017 Chevy Equinox trailer hitch - not only was the product well constructed, but the videos on installation take the guess work out of it. My hitch came with a damaged box and scratches on the paint. Concerned about rusting etrailer promptly sent another which arrived fast in good condition. The service on the phone was wonderful. The local U-Haul dealer was going to charge me $4$$ for the installation which included $1$$ for the wiring. My Equinox has the trailer wiring quick connect which took me 2 minutes to open and connect the harness. So my total with receiver and harness was $1$$. Compare that to the U-Haul $4$$ quote. It was a no brainer. I am telling many friends about trailer.com. Thank you for a great product and great service! 360922

I installed the 76028 on a 2017 GMC terrain in 45 minutes with no problems.I cut out the access panel a little different than the instructions showed for a more hidden look. The ball mount locking pin and safety chains install with no problem with access panel cut as in the photo and give the hitch a clean hidden look.Would recommend this hitch for any one wanting to add a hitch to a GMC Terrain ,well built and easy to install! 439320

Just finished up installing hitch #76028 on our 2014 Equinox. Will be towing a new Forest River Wolf Pup. Also have a Steadi-Flex weight distribution system ordered more on that later. As others have mentioned the packaging for shipping leaves something to be desired. The hitch arrived on time with the box badly broken, the hitch was scratched to bare metal in three places and one of the arms was bent. After straightening and painting it went on without a hitch. It took longer than anticipated due to having to first remove an old hitch, and that I am fussy. I took the opportunity to clean and paint the area where it mounts and to tap out all holes I think you should put a caution in your video about making your own tap that after each turn of the tap you should back up a quarter turn to clean out the threads, also DO NOT force the tap. Breaking the tap or the weldment loose makes for a LOT more work. The people I worked with to order were great and your website has a lot of good information. Will buy again and recomend to others 488175

2016 Chevrolet Equinox

I searched the internet to put a hitch on my 2016 Chevy Equinox and found an instructional video from eTrailer.com where they installed on my exact car. I decided to go with eTrailer.com because they answered all my questions and because of the video-I support businesses that go the extra mile with these videos. Shipping was quick and well tracked, however, the box was flimsy and the one end of the hitch had come out of the box side and the ball mount could have easily come out of that hole during shipping. If I were eTrailer.com I'd charge an extra couple of bucks for more sturdy boxes-people will still buy as eTrailer is a well-trusted brand and this would overcome a lot of the negative reviews you'll see on their site about this shipping issue in their own reviews :-) I installed the hitch by myself (definitely recommend help as two people holding it up to the frame makes attaching 100% easier) in about 45 minutes total (out of the box, read instructions, review video again and installation complete). All hardware went on with no issues. Great quality hitch! I also bought the lesser expensive wiring assembly because most recent equinox's come hitch ready with pre-wired assembly in the left side compartment-snap and done. Picked up a new trailer at Home Depot within days and drove 5 feet and the clacking was horrible. I had always had a welded hitch before buying a hitch that took a ball mount. I really thought something was wrong and when I searched the internet that night it turns out this is very common. However, all you need is some sort of hitch "silencing" device. The number of options will drive you mad but I went with the Roadmaster Quiet Hitch and it did the trick for much less than most of the other options. If I were eTrailer.com I'd have that as one of the RECOMMENDED add-ons and explanation why its super-worthy when customers are buying a hitch. Would have saved me the time and hassle of dealing with it later and the extra shipping charge for buying after the fact when I got free shipping for the other items the first time :-) All in all, I'm super, super happy with my hitch, wiring assembly, ball mount, ball mount locking pin and the hitch silencer. 2015 Chevrolet Equinox

I received the ordered hitch for my car right on time, but the box had taken a real beating where the flanges that attach to the frame rails had broken through the box Since I am by myself I needed to review the video that eTrailer had on the internet.Very good but I noted that when it came time to attach the hitch to the car the demo shows two people making the install!. wow now what do I do to get the hitch into place without losing the bolts back up inside the frame at the four points that the bolts just hang in place. So, I figured out a way to balance the hitch on a floor jack( see picture) to slowly and careful to position the hitch up in position. Since I was nervous about losing the four free hanging carriage bolts back up inside the frame rail and bumper I left the pull wires on each of the carriage bolts and laced the wires through the hitch in each of the four location. When the hitch was up sufficient to pull the carriage bolts through the hitch four bolt location and then remove each pull wire as I was able to have sufficient bolt thread to attach the conical washers and Hex nuts before removing the floor jack and tighten ing the four carriage bolts to snug the hitch into the final position in order to install the two metric bolt on each outside of the existing weld nuts in the frame rail. All went well except the bolt in the lower position on the frame rail drivers side appears to have hit something in side the frame rail and was not able to be treaded completely into the tight position. When removing the m12x1.75 x 45 bolt the thread showed the roll over of the threads (see picture). Off to Ace's Hardware and a new bolt m12x1.75 x 30 to solve the problem. Over all the hitch fit just as designed and I am very pleased with the produce, and proved to myself that I could do the install by myself! Where there is a will there is a WAY ! 498736

Robert, thank you for your review. Over time grime can get into the weld nuts in your frame and harden over time. This will make it seem like the bolts supplied with your hitch are too large for your weld nuts. The good news is the weld nuts can be easily cleaned out. We do not recommend changing out the hardware. I have attached a link that will help you.

Wow delivered in 3 days and installed in a little over an hour. Had to grind down large spacers to fit into frame rather than enlarging the hole. Pull wires worked awesome. Install wasn't to bad it's a really good fit but work for 1 person but I won out in the end. Shipment arrived with tabs sticking out if the box no damage but some foam packing might help. Would recommend you guys anyway. 411611

The hitch arrived in two days . It took me about an hour to install by myself. Would have gone faster with an additional pair of hands. I used a floor jack to hold up the hitch which made it easier. The hardest part was getting the nuts on the two front bolts. The wiring was also easy to install. I saved myself $260 over the local trailer rental company installed price. Great company with excellent products and easy to follow instructions! 572287

From the time I placed my order to when I received my items, the whole process was pretty easy and quick. After watching the online video on how to install the hitch several times, the day finally came to install it. Had it not been for the snug fit, it definately makes the installation easier to have a second pair of hands! Luckily for me, since the hitch fit quite snuggly onto the frame of my Equinox, I was able to practically wedge it in place and it stayed up. I would say that the most difficult part of this installation was feeding the hardware fro the "front 2 bolts" through the bumper. On my first try on the driver side I lost the hardware 1/2 inside the bumper cavity. At first I paniced and decided to take a break. I proceeded to install the passenger side hardware and took my time and some extra jiggling to get the hardware to pass though. Luckily there was extra "feed" wire and I was able to use a magnet to retrieve the lost hardware. On my second attempt I was succesfull and was able to button up the install. Total install time was less than an hour!! Everything fit up nicely and worked like it should have. I'm impressed with how easy this was in install and how well the hitch fit the vehicle! Practically plug & play!! It really is as easy as it looked on the video! I was concerned at first because the box received a bit of damage from shipping but all the hardware was secured to the hitch and nothing was lost during shipping!! See attached pics. Once installed, this hitch isn't going ANYWHERE!! Very securely mounted and just a solid product! It practically becomes one with the vehicle. It will outlive the vehichle! 461505

The product arrived in two days. I liked the custom fit for my vehicle to facilitate installation. I installed the hitch by myself and the process took a total of four hours including the wiring, setup and cleanup. I installed the hitch in my driveway without a jack or jack stands. The included directions were clear and concise. I will be using the hitch to pull a small trailer for home project materials. Mulch, top soil, plants and maybe moving furniture for friends etc. Adding the hitch allows me to not have to ask a friend to use his vehicle and trailer when I have a need. This way I can operate on my own schedule since I retired in Oct. 2017. I would suggest that if one lives in an area where there is frequent snow and the roads are treated with rock salt to be diligent about cleaning out the pre-threaded holes where the hitch mounts. I actually had to run a tap through the threads. The wire brush method did not do the trick. Overall I look ahead to years of service from the hitch and am glad I bought it! Customer service was exceptional (Thanks Paula S) and I would recommend etrailer.com to my friends and family! 495864

The 3111-1base plate for my Saturn fit very well and can't be seen when the arms are removed. Wonderful product, and I am extremely happy it. Installation of the trailer receiver was very easy, fit like a glove, and is very solid. It took about 35 minutes. Instructions were very easy to follow. Great job Etrailer!. And thanks to George from Etrailer for the follow up email. You do a super job. 339296

This hitch looks great mounted on my SUV. The only real problem is that its been on for about a month and the paint is coming off in MANY places already. I rarely drive, and haven't towed anything yet so I'd expect this to hold up way better in the short time that I have had it mounted. I will touch it up with some spray paint I guess...but its just an added step. The mounting was tough, but only because I have an older SUV with some rust issues on the side threaded bolts. Took some doing, but was able to get it on. Also, maybe send these in a tougher box, it was sticking out of both ends upon receipt. 437280

Thanks for checking in. The trailer hitch was great and held up fantastic. Only got to use it about 4 times, but it worked perfectly. The wiring harness matched perfectly and was a breeze to install. The SUV i mounted it on didnt have enough towing capacity for my new boat, so I ended up trading it in for a newer one that had a factory hitchpre-wired setup. So the hitch receiver and wiring stayed with the SUV upon trade in. I held on to the ball mounts and the other bars and have used them a bunch for towing and launching and they are working great. Really love the site and am shopping around for some other accessories like a roof rack and maybe some offroad recovery gear as well.

What can you say about an inanimate object that just hangs around and follows you everywhere you go? Really not good for anything, until you need it. Then it's worth the small price you pay. In my case a class III hitch is really overkill because I only pull a utility trails a few time a year. But I am prepared for any pulling job my Equinox can handle. With over 40 years of fabrication experience in manufacturing I know a well made product when I see it. This hitch is a perfect example of great craftsmanship. I had no problems with fit. One person can install it but a second pair of hands helps out. If you watch the videos etrailer has available, even a novice DIY should have no problem installing it. 726762

The trailer hitch for my Pontiac Torrant/Chevy Equinox arrived in great shape and all parts were intact. Installation was relatively easy. I have a floor jack with a crossbar that made holding the hitch in place while I inserted the bolts very easy. If no floor jack is available it would be wise to have an extra person to help hold the hitch in place. I would recommend this hitch as it is heavy steel and all bolt holes lined up with the factory frame welded bolts. 723180

This is a well made product with a great price that fits perfectly and comes with all hardware and neat pulling wires to make the installation of the carriage bolts/backup blocks a snap. (I saw etrailers video and did not realize the pulling wires came with the installation kit.) This was a pleasant surprise. One thing I strongly suggest is to buy a 12mm tap to chase the threads on your vehicle prior to installation. My 2016 Equinox threads were so rusty, it was difficult to even start the tap in order to chase the threads. (The bolts would have never started without threads chasing.) Free shipping and such a quick delivery time (2 days) makes this a great deal. Thanks 720278

Ordering the hitch was easy and shipping was fast and they keep you informed. The reason I only give it 4 stars is that the large plate that need to slip into the frame were cut to big and I had to file them down to get them in the slots where they go. Once that was done everything else went smooth. Just was frustrating and made an easy ½ hour job into an 1 hour project. 716487

Build Quality regarding materials and finish is excellent. I did however, have to cut almost 1/8" off the small blocks and shave the large blocks to allow them to go into the frame. I also had to drill out to enlarge the holes on the hitch for the large block carriage bolt with the pull wire attached to be able to pass through. I called the number on the instructions and told their tech. Other than the extra time and grunting it took to correct the items it is now a perfect fit and looks great. 703708

Ask the Experts about this Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch

Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • What is the GCWR of a 2015 Chevy Equinox 4 Cylinder
  • To determine whether or not you will be able to pull your boat and boat trailer with your 2015 Chevrolet Equinox you will need to do a little bit of calculating. In an online version of the owners manual for your Equinox it says that the GCWR (Gross Combination Weight Rating) for a 4 cylinder is 5,787 lbs for a FWD and 5,952 lbs if it is AWD. The GCWR will include the weight of the fully loaded Equinox, trailer, passengers, cargo, equipment, and conversions. The most ideal weight to...

  • Draw-Tite vs. Curt Hitch on a 2013 GMC Terrain
  • In terms of quality both Draw-Tite and Curt make very reliable trailer hitches and honestly neither is going to wilt under the elements in the northeast U.S. When choosing a hitch what people generally look at is capacity and, like you asked, if modifications are going to be made to their vehicle. If I had a 2013 GMC Terrain, I would go with the Draw-Tite # 76028 over the Curt # 13591. The Draw-Tite has a higher tongue weight capacity and overall towing capacity than the Curt, If...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch for a 2017 Chevrolet Equinox that is Made in the USA
  • For a trailer hitch that is a confirmed fit for your 2017 Chevrolet Equinox and is made in the USA, I recommend the Trailer Hitch Receiver part # E98865. This hitch has a class III rating with a 2" receiver tube opening. It also has a weight capacity that exceeds your vehicle's rating so there will be no need for something with a higher rating like the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 76028 which is not made in the USA. For a trailer wiring harness, I recommend the...

I checked and the similar Curt # 13591 and etrailer.com # E98865 trailer hitches use M12x1.75x40 size bolts which means they are slightly shorter but not so much that it would affect anything.
