Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2015 Dodge Journey - Draw-Tite

Today on our 2015 Dodge Journey, we'll be having a look at the Draw-tite Max-frame Class 3 2-inch Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number 75648. Here's what our hitch looks like once it's installed. You can see there is a very minimal amount that hangs down. What does hang down is a nice round tube. Then we have actually our 2-inch receiver here. It's a nice matte black powder coat finish, so it looks like a very factory appearance as well.

We have this nice tab hanging down here where we can mount our wiring connectors if we so choose to. We have these very easy to access safety chain loops right here, our standard 5/8ths diameter hitch pin hole here to put in our ball mount and bike carrier, cargo carrier, or things of that nature. We also have a smaller diameter pin. It's a 4J pin stabilization device sold separately on our website in case your cargo carrier bike rack does not have an anti-rattle device built into it. You can utilize one of these to help eliminate the rattling in your tubular receiver.

This hitch has a 400-pound max tongue weight rating and a 4000-pound max gross trailer weight rating. Those numbers don't change if you use a weight distribution setup on your trailer or not. They're the same across the board. Now for a few measurements to help you choose any hitch-mounted accessories you may need such as a ball mount bike rack or a cargo carrier. We're looking at about 15 inches from the ground to the top of our 2-inch receiver and about an inch from the center of the 5/8ths diameter hitch pin hole to the back of our bumper. Now that we've gone over a few of the features, we'll show you how to install it. The first thing we're going to want to do on our Dodge Journey to install the trailer hitch is we want to support the exhaust.

I'm using a cam buckle style strap here and hooking up on the rear subframe, drawing it tight around the exhaust for right now. Once we remove the rubber hangers, we can lower it as needed to get access. Now there are three rubber exhaust hangers, one at the front of the muffler. We'll spray it down with some penetrating oil lubricant to help slide it off easier. We'll do the same on the two in the back.

Now using a pry bar, we can work our exhaust hangers off or if you have a big pair of plyers like these, it goes real easy. With our hangers removed, we can loosen our straps slightly and lower our exhaust down so we have some room to work. With our exhaust out of the way, we can install our hardware that our hitch will mount to. Taking our fish wire, we'll go through this hole here in the bumper support; slide it out; insert our block; screw our carriage bolt onto it; slide the block into the bumper tube; pull the bolt on through and remove our fish wire. We'll do the same thing on the other side. Now we'll take our handle nut and put a very slight bend in it and we'll insert it through the square hole right here and slide it forward through that hole right there. We'll do the same thing on the other side. Now we'll take two of our wedge fascia plates. We'll put one on top of our hitch with the big end going towards the back of it. This will be sandwiched between the body of the vehicle and the top of the receiver tube of the hitch. We'll put one on the bottom in the opposite direction, meaning the small end will be going toward the rear of the vehicle and the big end will be going towards the front. Now we'll take a piece of tape and we'll tape them together. That way they stay on while we're bolting the hitch into place. With both those taped on there nice and tight, we'll poke a hole in the tape going all the way through the top and the bottom layers of the tape. That way, our bolt will slide through nice and easily and we won't have to worry about our wedges falling out when we're putting the hitch into position. We'll do the same on the other side now. Now with the help of an assistant, we'll raise the hitch into position and loosely install the hardware so we have the bolt and the conical lock washer in the front hole that goes into the handle nut. Then we have our conical lock washer on the back and our nut. Now that all of our hardware is loosely installed, we can tighten it with our Impact. On the passenger side, the one towards the front we'll need to use a wrench just so we can have enough clearance between the muffler. With all our bolts snugged down, we can torque them to specifications found on the instructions. I would like to point out that the back bolts and the carriage bolts are a different torque than the front bolts that go in the handle nuts so you want to pay particular close attention to that in the instruction manual. Now I'll push the exhaust back up, snug up our strap. That will help hold it in place while we reinstall the hangers. That completes the installation of our hitch, so we can remove our strap that we used to support the exhaust and we're done. That completes the look of the Draw-tite Max-frame Trailer hitch Class 3 2-inch Receiver, part number 75648, on our 2015 Dodge Journey.

Hitch has slots for front bolts. Bolts are at the outside edge on both sides and are hard to insert. I inserted one bolt and used a pry bar to get other bolt into frame. I wanted this hitch to use the extra hole for the stabilizing the cargo carrier. Nice hitch and looks good, just hard to attach. 548451

Works as it should and is very sturdy, looks great too! unfortunately on my wife's 2011 dodge journey the 2 front holes weren't pre existing but drilling a hole is nothing. BUT my biggest issue with it is that both mufflers hit the hitch during any acceleration and causes an annoying vibrating sound, can't hear it outside the vehicle but definitely inside the vehicle. All in all it was a great purchase including the wiring harness. ALL WAS SUPER EASY! 546009

My husband and I just finished installing the hitch on my 2014 Dodge Journey. It shipped super fast. The written directions and install video were excellent. It took us two hours and the largest chunk of time was getting the grommets off the exhaust system. I feel so accomplished. I didn't know this was something we could do ourselves. Our first use with be for a bike rack when we head to the beach later this summer. 541684

This hitch fit perfectly. It did take me longer than expected, the exhaust hangers are really hard to get off - I used a 'wonder bar' and hammer. I did find one unexpected interference, though. There was a wiring harness and connector on the left side that had to be relocated an inch or so to keep from squishing it. The spare tire misses the hitch when lowered by something like an inch. Nice design! This hitch will be exactly what we need to haul the golf cart around! Since this Dodge Journey has a 6 cylinder engine, it is rated at about 2500 lbs of tow weight, so we will be able to haul a bit more when needed. 519957

  • Trailer Hitch To Carry Cargo Carrier on 2019 Dodge Journey
The hitch that you will need for the cargo carrier on the 2019 Dodge Journey is Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit part # 75648 because it provides about 2 inches more ground clearance then the other options. Good hitch clearance is important when carrying a cargo carrier because you a less likely to scrape the ground with the carrier in low ground clearance situations. • Hitch Recommendation for 2017 Dodge Journey AWD
Your 2017 Dodge Journey is one of the vehicles for which two types of hitch are made, both a smaller 1-1/4-inch Class II hitch and a 2-inch Class III. In such cases we always recommend the 2-inch option since it will be compatible with more hitch-mount accessories and because it will offer a higher weight rating without much more additional cost. • Determine if 2014 Dodge Journey has LED or Incandescent Taillights for Trailer Hitch and Wiring
Easiest way to tell is to watch the lights illuminate. If they come on immediately with basically zero transition between off and on and are almost painful to look at you have LEDs. If you can watch the bulb get brighter and looking at the light doesn't hurt your eyes you would have incandescents. Also if the bulb is round and has that old school style of wiring in it where there is two vertical wires and a couple horizontal wires that run between them that is incandescent. For a...
