Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2014 Toyota Camry - Draw-Tite

Today on our 2014 Toyota Camry, we're going to be taking a look at and installing the Draw-Tite Class II trailer hitch receiver, part number 36540. Here's what this hitch is going to look like once it's installed on the vehicle. As you can see, overall it tucks up pretty tight. Although you can see the cross tube here, it still maintains a pretty clean look. This hitch is going to be really good for things like bike racks and cargo carriers because it's going to give plenty of clearance. Where the face of this receiver tube is it's actually just a little bit out past the edge of the bumper here, not enough to look bad, but enough to make sure you have plenty of clearance for any of those hitch mounted accessories that you want to put on here. The installation of this hitch will require some drilling, but it's not very difficult to do.

Customers seem to really like using bike racks with this particular hitch because it does give plenty of clearance and it's a really good fit. This hitch features a 300 lb max tongue weight rating and a 3500 lb gross trailer weight rating. It's not compatible with a weight distribution system, but you will want to be sure to check the owner's manual to see if the vehicle's capable of that type of weight. Now I'll give you some measurements to help assist you in your selection of hitch mounted accessories, such as ball mounts, bike racks, or cargo carriers. The distance from the center of the hitch pin hole to the outer most part of the bumper is 1-3/4". From the top inside edge of the receiver tube opening to the ground it is 11-1/4". Now I'll show you how to install it.

To start our install, we'll need to remove the appearance panel that's underneath here because it covers up our driver's side frame mount, which we're going to need access to to install the hitch. First thing I'll do is remove the push pin fasteners that hold it in place, and you use a trim panel tool to do that. If you don't have one, you can pick one up on the site, part number ALL648544, or you can use a flat head screwdriver to get these out. You just get under the center of them there and pry downwards in order to remove. Then we need to begin removing the screws that have 10mm heads on them here.

We got 4 across the back, then one over here by the wheel well, then we move along the front side of the panel there. We've got one up top here, then a few more along the underside. Once you remove those, there's just a couple nuts that sit up on some threads, so you can just begin to pull it down out of there and those will pop right off, and then you can set that aside. Now we're going to need to lower this exhaust, and I'm going to put a support strap across here just to make sure that it doesn't hang too low and possibly damage any of the flanges on the exhaust. I can take my exhaust and remove these rubber isolators and then I'll unbolt the bracket here. I'm going to put a little bit of spray lubricant up on here just to help ease the removal of these.

I can use a pry bar to get the isolator off of there. To remove those two bolts, we using a 14mm socket. Then I can set that out of the way. Now I'll remove this exhaust hanger bracket that's on the front side of the muffler. That'll be two 12mm bolts and I'll just take the bracket down. I'm also going to take down this exhaust hanger right here to let it hang a little more so I have a little bit better access up there. It's going to be 12mm and I'm just going to remove the bracket on this one. Now I can take off the two 10mm bolts that hold this heat shield in place on the passenger side frame rail. Over here on the driver's side, we're going to need to remove these two little covers right here. Underneath are two well nuts that we'll be using. It's a good idea to get a second set of hands in order to put this up into position. Right now we're just going to be test fitting it, so you want to take one of your 7/16 bolts and just get it started. We can just snug these up on both sides so then we'll have a good idea where our hitch is going to sit. This forward most hole on the hitch is going to be the one we're marking on both sides because we do need to drill a hole up there in order to have a carriage bolt come through. I'm just going to use a permanent marker and mark where the center of that hole is. I'll do that same thing on the other side. We just need to take the hitch back out so then we can drill out the holes that we marked. With the location of the hole that we're going to be drilling here, you want to be sure that the center of that hole, where you drilled the pilot hole, is going to be big enough so when that hole's 1" it's not going to go up onto the side of the frame rail here because your carriage bolt's going to need to sit right up in there. As long as that's in a good location, you don't need to move it over just a hair. I'm going to drill a pilot hole and then I'll step up drill bit sizes. Now I can use my step drill bit in order to go to 1". The little white mark that's on there is there to mark the 1" size. I'll drill this out until I get there. Once you got it drilled out, you want to make sure that your little spacer will fit up through there. Take the carriage bolt and spacer block, get them started with fish wire here, and we're going to be using the reverse fish wire method. We'll send the head of this carriage bolt up into the frame and then the block, then we'll pull it down through that hole and remove the fish wire. We'll repeat that same process on the other side. Now with our assistant we'll reinstall our hitch. On the driver's side, we'll just install one of our 10mm bolts. You want to be sure to not push that carriage bolt back up into the frame. We'll install one of our 10mm bolts with conical toothed washer with the teeth facing upwards. Over here on the passenger's side, because we're also going to have to reinstall that exhaust hanger bracket through these two holes, we're only going to put on the conical tooth washer with the teeth facing up towards the hitch and the nut on this back one so we have access to these, but we can let the hitch hang there. In order to reinstall that bracket, we'll take our 10mm hardware and then just put the bracket back in place and line it up with the holes. We can put our 10mm bolt with conical toothed washers and get them started, and then we can get the rest of our hardware started as well. Before we tighten it up, you want to make sure the hitch is centered on the vehicle. With it centered, we can go in, use a 17mm, and tighten up our rear bolts here. On the nut that's on that carriage bolt, that'll be an 11/16. We'll do that same thing on the other side. Once we've got all of our hardware tightened up, we can go back through and torque it to the specification in the instructions. Some of the different hardware has different specs, so you'll want to be sure to torque them correctly. There's bolts that come with the kit that are longer in order to help with reinstalling this heat shield, but what I'm going to do is I'm going to drill a hole right through this section here because that's where this hits and that's just going to allow this to go up a little bit more flush and just fit a little bit better. I'll use that step drill bit just to make it larger. Now we can check the fit on it again. That looks just about right. Now what I'll do is I'll use one of the original ones and put it in the front hole up there because that's still going to butt directly up to the frame. This back one back here, I'm going to use one of the longer 6mm bolts that came with it. It's going to help to make sure that we can reach that hole and tighten it down through the hitch. Then I'll go ahead and tighten these in. Now I can begin reinstalling the exhaust. With the exhaust reinstalled, let's go ahead and take our support strap off so that we don't forget it. I've gone ahead and marked our appearance panel according to the instructions in order to trim out a sections so I can still get it to fit back on. It's your choice if you want to do this or not, you don't have to, but it just helps maintain a little bit cleaner look underneath the vehicle. Now that we made sure that it's cut correctly, we can slide it back up into position here. We'll make sure everything's lined up then we can push two of our little fasteners back onto the studs and then begin to reinstall all our hardware. That's going to complete our look and install of the Draw-Tite Class II trailer hitch receiver, part number 36540, on our 2014 Toyota Camry.

Wanted to carry bikes on my new car so a friend recommended etrailer.com. He had a great experience buying from them so I decided to check them out. The prices are the best that I've seen and the shipping was FREE! Found my cars hitch using their simple hitch finder app and done. The hitch was shipped super quick. When the hitch arrived I watched the installation videos and then I was ready to install. Complete install took about 2 hours because I was alone but I was in no hurry. Super happy with the looks of my hitch and that I now can transport my bikes. I would highly recommend buying from etrailer if you're wanting a DIY hitch install. 328836

My hitch was installed on a 2017 Toyota Camry LE by my regular mechanic. He took about 1.5 hours and said the hitch installed nicely, only 2 holes needed to be drilled. The online videos (thanks Etrailer!) are a nice touch and would have been very helpful to me if I had done the install myself. The hitch looks good and integrates nicely on the 2017 Camry. It works well with the Swagman XTC-2 two bike rack. The XTC-2 appears to be a really nice rack although I only have one outing under my belt. The rack is a good combination of sturdiness without getting ridiculously beefy and heavy. My only gripe is it's not clear if the rack can be easily locked to the hitch. 403998

The 2012 Camry video was very helpful. My 2013 Camry Hybrid was slightly different in that the plastic cover went all the way over from muffler to the bottom of the fender on the driver side. I removed the cover and the exhaust pipe as shown in the video. My son and I placed the receiver hitch in the approximate location looked at it very hard, snugged it up with a couple bolts as recommended. Confirmed that all of the other bolts go in as required. Drilled the pilot hole on the driver side, Removed the hitch and drilled the 1 inch hole. Inserted the carriage bolt and cinch as shown in the video. Reinstalled the trailer hitch with all of the bolts and has required. Replaced the exhaust system and heat shield. To reinstall the plastic cover required one cut (about 1 inch wide by 7inches long) on the driver side to clear hitch attachment and allow the cover to slide around into position. It was actually quite easy. Yes we did Jack the car up before we started on it. 136925

Very fast shipping thanks. The video helped out a lot for the install. Only problem was the box was damaged and the hitch was sticking through the box. The hitch was missing a little paint. Hope it doesn't rust. Hopefully etralier can secure the hitch in the packaging a little better in the future. 520463

I got a new 2017 Camry and an avid cyclist. Before getting the hitch, I would have to take apart my wheels just to fit it in the trunk. This got old and annoying really quick. I found the Draw-tite trailer receiver hitch on etrailer.com. I made sure it would fit and got it. I had my local mechanic shop install it watching the video vs the manual, because that was confusing. It fit perfectly flushed and clean. I put a hitch mounted bike rack and now my life is that much happier! 367387

This is the second receiver that I have purchased from etrailer.com and I have been very satisfied with both of them. I use them for transporting my bicycle carrier and bicycles on my 2016 Toyota Camry. I also purchased the bicycle carrier from etrailer.com. Dealing with etrailer.com is very simple and easy and the products are excellent and priced very reasonably. Shipping is immediate and products have reached me in short-order. I have never had any problems with any of my orders or products purchased. Thanks etrailer.com!! 328406

I am a 52 year old female 5 feet tall and 120 lbs and I installed this product on my 2014 Camry SE V6 with dual exhaust and I did it alone with the help of a 1/2 ton jack and some ramps. I used the jack to hold the exhaust and then to raise it back up to refasten it. This was so easy to do and I couldn’t be happier. I also installed the wiring to lights and ran it through the inside of vehicle and then through the firewall. Great product. 509018

The DrawTite hitch for my 2016 Camry was delivered promptly and accurately. I thought that the instructions were detailed, but I mainly relied upon the web site video for installation assistance. The hitch fit well and looks good on the vehicle. The only difficulty I had was drilling the two holes in the vehicle undercarriage. I did not have a step bit and hesitated buying an off-brand tool since several reviews indicated poor cutting performance. I reluctantly purchased a Milwaukee bit (expensive) but was pleased with the results. I plan to used the hitch with a bike carrier, and I'm looking forward to lots of trips. I saved money and have the satisfaction of self installation! 408873

I bought a trailer hitch and wiring harness for a 2104 Camry. The delivery was fast and efficient. The hitch and wiring was as advertised and installed as the etrailer videos portrayed. The bottom trim panel did not need as much adjustment or cutting as expected. Only had to cut out a piece 2 inch wide by 12 inch long and the panel fit nicely. Was easy to install. Took approximately 4 hours total due to not having a lift to raise the car to a better working height. I have bought previously from etrailer and always a pleasant experience. 543035

etrailer delivered everything quickly and the instructions were very good. Installed this on my 2012 Camry to carry a bike rack only, so this hitch was perfect since it doesn't include a ball mount or ball. Figuring out how to drill the one inch holes in each frame rail was the hardest part - there are not a lot of metal bits that big available - my solution was to use a Harbor Freight #96275 step drill. All in all a great experience with etrailer. 46327

The request is for a product review, but I want to review Etrailer. The reality is is when you have a 2012 Camry as we do, there is a little choice as to the hitch except for which brand you pick Draw-Tite or Curt, but they will be virtually identical 1 1/4 inch hitches. You do, however, have a choice as to where you buy your hitch. I liked the etrailer website and thought I had all the information I needed, but decided to call to ask a few questions and place my order. The customer service was great. The representative (Leeza) was knowledgeable about the product and helpful. I placed my order and had the product here within a week. There was good communication and follow up throughout the process and I have an 800 number to call if I have any problems. So yes, I recommend the hitch, but more importantly I recommend etrailer.com 454611

This hitch was rather difficult to install, the instructions had errors, and some of the included hardware was incorrect. It is installed on a 2017 Camry Hybrid. I see that the parts list has now been corrected, item 7 Hex Bolt, M8-1.25 x 50 CL10.9 used to be listed as Hex Bolt, M8-1.00 x 50 CL10.9. The proper thread bolt was included, but it was still wrong. A fully threaded bolt is needed (or a shorter bolt) for the installation on the Hybrid mode, but the the bolt in the package was only partially threaded and would not go in far enough into the threaded place on the car. I had to go out and buy the right bolt, and since the parts list was not correct at the time, I got the wrong one. Instructions 11 & 12 are reversed. You cannot reinstall the heat shield once the muffler is in place, you have to do it prior to lifting the muffler because the muffler blocks access to the bolts (plus you could not get the heat shield into position once the muffler is back in place). Drilling the 1" hole in the frame rail was difficult, I used [speciality bit obtained from a local hardware store] and drilled successively larger holes. A step bit might have also worked. I could not find my 1/2" drive 18mm socket, and finally figured out that 18mm is an uncommon size and that my socket set had not come with 18mm, so I had to go buy a set of sockets with 18mm. I think that I should have bought the Curt hitch instead of the Drawtite. I've had better experiences with Curt. 426402

Product arrived with a scrape in the hitch down to the metal, had to spray some paint on it. Video and instructions were not very helpful for a V6 Camry. The appearance cover did not need to be removed at all, that wasted a good 30 minutes or more. Also the video was deceptive. They show him lowering the exhaust, but when he is drilling the exhaust is completely gone. I realized this after lowering my exhaust there was not room to drill without having a special drill or removing the exhaust completely. 658094

Very happy with etrailer service, earlier than promised, well packed, installation video, etc. Hitch is rusting after less than a year. I know we had a snowy, salty winter, I washed it best I could under the circumstances. How much could a second coat of paint cost...? Actually, after observing other hitches around, this is pretty much what I expected. 632003

Good, fast service. Prefer over Curt because there was no cutting and it seems better made for carrying bicycle rack (no straps required, though I might use them anyway). It was also better packaged. Printed instructions suck; instructions on internet much better. Without internet instructions, I would have had difficulties. Took me about four hours (had several "re-dos".) When drilling hole on bottom, do NOT rely on safety glasses unless you want metal shards in your eyes. Use a full face shield PLUS safety glasses. (Metal in eyes can haunt you in the future if you ever need an MRI.) 592128

Draw-Tite hitch seems great. Drilling 1" holes in the frame was unusual for me but it all worked fine. I would have been a little happier if those 1" holes were centered in the frame instead of being tight to the outer edge of the frame on both sides. The hitch, once installed, is small and out of the way under the bumper and it has a very clean look. 529081

Very pleased with this product. Arrived in a timely manner undamaged and with all the correct parts included. Installation was surprisingly easy. The on line video from etrailer was a huge help very detailed. I installed the hitch on my 2016 Camry so I could mount my cargo carrier. As we are avid campers we need the extra room to transport supplies. The construction of the mount is solid and fit quit snugly against the under carriage. Customer service was excellent received an e-mail when the product shipped and another when it was delivered with a phone number to use if I needed any assistance. I would recommend this product to my family and friends. 518575

Instructions were clear and complete. Works great! Overall, I am delighted that I bought the hitch. 510854

Ask the Experts about this Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch
Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • Trailer Hitch Receiver Installation On 2017 Toyota Avalon
  • The Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver Class II - 1-1/4" # C12107 or the Draw-Tite # 36540 will fit the same way on your 2017 Toyota Avalon. You can either cut a hole for the hitch in the underbody panel or you can leave it off, but there isn't a trailer hitch receiver option that will allow you to leave the underbody panel on without trimming.

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch and Adapter for 2013 Toyota Camry
  • The trailer hitches that are available for your 2013 Toyota Camry are Class II hitches with 1-1/4 inch receiver openings. This is most likely because the Camry simply does not have the towing or tongue weight capacity that a higher rated trailer hitch (and larger receiver opening) will provide. I recommend installing the Draw-Tite Class II Frame Receiver Hitch # 36540 over the Curt model that is also confirmed to fit your vehicle. This is because unlike Curt, Draw-Tite does not require...

  • Recommended Lightweight Bike Rack to Use on 2014 Toyota Camry
  • The bike rack that is the best combination of lightweight and easy to use which will work with the 1-1/4" Class II Draw-Tite # 36540 on your 2014 Toyota Camry is the Inno Aero Light QM # INH330. This is a 2-bike rack that weighs just 30 lbs and is a frame-mounted rack so it will work with your hybrid bike that has fenders. The Inno Aero Light # INH330 is also easy to install because it uses a locking hand knob to tighten the rack inside your hitch. The Aero Light can either fold up...

  • Recommended Bike Carriers for 2015 Toyota Camry
  • The trunk-mount bike rack I recommend for your 2015 Camry is the Thule Raceway Pro, part # TH9001PRO. This carrier uses 4 retractable cables to secure the rack to the car versus other bike carriers that typically use 6 straps. The # TH9001PRO features no-sway cradles to help keep the bikes from hitting one another and it has a locking system to secure the bikes to the carrier and the carrier to the vehicle to help deter theft. This bike carrier also fold flat for easy storage when not...

  • Hitch Flex and Use of Support Straps When Hitch Bike Rack is Installed
  • Trailer hitches have to be able to flex to avoid damage. The metals used in fabrication of a hitch like Draw-Tite # 36540 and Curt # C12107 are selected to allow for this. The mounting brackets on a hitch are not of the same metal formulation as the cross tube. A totally rigid hitch would be more likely to suffer damage. Some flex is okay. Excess motion of a hitch-mounted accessory such as a bike rack is something else. This is why Curt requires use of their stabilizing strap # 18050...

  • Can I Tow A Trailer With A 2013 Toyota Camry?
  • Per the manufacturer, Toyota does not recommend towing any type of trailer with the 2013 Toyota Camry. The last generation of Toyota Camry's sold here in the U.S. from 2007-2011, had a max tow rating of 1000 lbs. Although I cannot recommend you tow a trailer with your Camry, a trailer hitch such as the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 36540 is perfectly capable of hauling rear mounted accessories such as a bike rack or cargo carrier. I have attached an installation video of the...

  • Stabilizer Strap and Ground Clearance for a 2012 Toyota Camry
  • Curt hitches like the Class II designed for the Toyota Camry, part # C12107 require the stability strap, part # 18050 as part of the warranty. Beyond that, the stability strap is one of the easiest ways to improve the performance of any non-trailer load by helping it become far more stable. I've included a video of our team installing a strap behind a 2014 Toyota Prius on a bike rack and a cargo carrier to better illustrate how it works. Draw-Tite does not have this requirement, though...

  • Will Draw-Tite or Curt Trailer Hitch Provide More Ground Clearance for 2016 Toyota Camry
  • You are right that the Draw-Tite Class II Frame Receiver Hitch # 36540 will be less conspicuous on your 2016 Toyota Camry than the Curt Class II Trailer Hitch # C12107. The measurements you are referring to are related, but are not both the ground clearance measurement. When we installed the Draw-Tite # 36540 hitch on a 2016 Camry, we found the top of the hitch receiver to sit 11-3/4 inches from the ground. The measurement you found for this hitch is referring the distance from...

  • Video to Use as Guide for Installing Draw Tite Hitch 36540 on a 2015 Toyota Camry
  • For your 2015 Toyota Camry the Draw Tite hitch part # 36540 is a confirmed fit that would work well for you. The install videos we have for this hitch are going to match the install for your 2015 model exactly. There would be no difference between installing this hitch on a 2015 Camry and a 2016 like what is in the video I attached a link to. The vehicles are of the same generation and are almost identical in all ways.

  • 4-Bike Rack for 2014 Toyota Camry
  • There is not an adapter available to allow the Reese Eclipse 4 Bike Rack # 63124 to be used with a 1-1/4" hitch, but there are economical racks available that will work for you. For a hitch, the Draw-Tite # 36540 fits your 2014 Toyota Camry and is a Class II, 1-1/4" hitch and the 4-bike rack I recommend checking out that will work with it is the Swagman Trailhead # S63380. This rack secures your bikes with anti-sway cradles that prevent your bikes from coming into contact with each other...

  • Is Drilling Required on Installation of Trailer Hitch For 2012 Toyota Camry
  • I have a couple of trailer hitches that are custom fits for your 2012 Toyota Camry, but they do require a couple holes to be drilled for installation. The Draw-Tite, part # 36540 and the Curt Hitch, part # C12107 will require two holes to be drilled on your vehicles frame. The Curt hitch will also require a couple of holes to be enlarged. They will also require some trimming or removal of an under-body panel. I am including links to the installation instructions of the hitches....

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch For 2015 Toyota Camry
  • All of the trailer hitches we offer for your 2015 Toyota Camry have 1-1/4 inch receiver openings. We do not carry a Class lll hitch that will work with your Camry. If you decide on a Class ll hitch I recommend the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch, part # 36540. This hitch does have a 1-1/4 inch receiver opening. I am not aware of a Draw-Tite Class lll hitch that is designed to fit your Camry. Depending on the weight of your bike carrier, you may be able to use an adapter like part # HTAD. Keep...

  • Installing Receiver Hitch on 2014 Toyota Avalon Hybrid
  • You are correct, installing the Curt Class II Receiver Hitch, # C12107, on your 2014 Toyota Avalon Hybrid would require you to trim the heat shield and plastic underbody panel. Draw-Tite offers a custom fit hitch for your Avalon but according to the notes, installation would still require the trimming. I have attached the installation instructions for the Draw-Tite Hitch, # 36540, for you to take a look at.

  • Can the 2017 Toyota Camry Hybrid Tow a Trailer
  • I checked the owner's manual online for the 2017 Toyota Camry hybrid and all it says is that towing a trailer is not recommended. It doesn't say you can't but it also does not provide a towing capacity for the vehicle. So it is up to you on whether or not you want to go ahead and tow the trailer. I can definitely tell you the hitch, wiring and accessories you will need. For a trailer hitch you can use # 36540. In addition to the hitch you will need a ball mount, # 36071. If the trailer...
