Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2014 Toyota Camry - Draw-Tite

Today on our 2014 Toyota Camry, we're going to be taking a look at and installing the Draw-Tite Class II trailer hitch receiver, part number 36540. Here's what this hitch is going to look like once it's installed on the vehicle. As you can see, overall it tucks up pretty tight. Although you can see the cross tube here, it still maintains a pretty clean look. This hitch is going to be really good for things like bike racks and cargo carriers because it's going to give plenty of clearance. Where the face of this receiver tube is it's actually just a little bit out past the edge of the bumper here, not enough to look bad, but enough to make sure you have plenty of clearance for any of those hitch mounted accessories that you want to put on here. The installation of this hitch will require some drilling, but it's not very difficult to do.

Customers seem to really like using bike racks with this particular hitch because it does give plenty of clearance and it's a really good fit. This hitch features a 300 lb max tongue weight rating and a 3500 lb gross trailer weight rating. It's not compatible with a weight distribution system, but you will want to be sure to check the owner's manual to see if the vehicle's capable of that type of weight. Now I'll give you some measurements to help assist you in your selection of hitch mounted accessories, such as ball mounts, bike racks, or cargo carriers. The distance from the center of the hitch pin hole to the outer most part of the bumper is 1-3/4". From the top inside edge of the receiver tube opening to the ground it is 11-1/4". Now I'll show you how to install it.

To start our install, we'll need to remove the appearance panel that's underneath here because it covers up our driver's side frame mount, which we're going to need access to to install the hitch. First thing I'll do is remove the push pin fasteners that hold it in place, and you use a trim panel tool to do that. If you don't have one, you can pick one up on the site, part number ALL648544, or you can use a flat head screwdriver to get these out. You just get under the center of them there and pry downwards in order to remove. Then we need to begin removing the screws that have 10mm heads on them here.

We got 4 across the back, then one over here by the wheel well, then we move along the front side of the panel there. We've got one up top here, then a few more along the underside. Once you remove those, there's just a couple nuts that sit up on some threads, so you can just begin to pull it down out of there and those will pop right off, and then you can set that aside. Now we're going to need to lower this exhaust, and I'm going to put a support strap across here just to make sure that it doesn't hang too low and possibly damage any of the flanges on the exhaust. I can take my exhaust and remove these rubber isolators and then I'll unbolt the bracket here. I'm going to put a little bit of spray lubricant up on here just to help ease the removal of these.

I can use a pry bar to get the isolator off of there. To remove those two bolts, we using a 14mm socket. Then I can set that out of the way. Now I'll remove this exhaust hanger bracket that's on the front side of the muffler. That'll be two 12mm bolts and I'll just take the bracket down. I'm also going to take down this exhaust hanger right here to let it hang a little more so I have a little bit better access up there. It's going to be 12mm and I'm just going to remove the bracket on this one. Now I can take off the two 10mm bolts that hold this heat shield in place on the passenger side frame rail. Over here on the driver's side, we're going to need to remove these two little covers right here. Underneath are two well nuts that we'll be using. It's a good idea to get a second set of hands in order to put this up into position. Right now we're just going to be test fitting it, so you want to take one of your 7/16 bolts and just get it started. We can just snug these up on both sides so then we'll have a good idea where our hitch is going to sit. This forward most hole on the hitch is going to be the one we're marking on both sides because we do need to drill a hole up there in order to have a carriage bolt come through. I'm just going to use a permanent marker and mark where the center of that hole is. I'll do that same thing on the other side. We just need to take the hitch back out so then we can drill out the holes that we marked. With the location of the hole that we're going to be drilling here, you want to be sure that the center of that hole, where you drilled the pilot hole, is going to be big enough so when that hole's 1" it's not going to go up onto the side of the frame rail here because your carriage bolt's going to need to sit right up in there. As long as that's in a good location, you don't need to move it over just a hair. I'm going to drill a pilot hole and then I'll step up drill bit sizes. Now I can use my step drill bit in order to go to 1". The little white mark that's on there is there to mark the 1" size. I'll drill this out until I get there. Once you got it drilled out, you want to make sure that your little spacer will fit up through there. Take the carriage bolt and spacer block, get them started with fish wire here, and we're going to be using the reverse fish wire method. We'll send the head of this carriage bolt up into the frame and then the block, then we'll pull it down through that hole and remove the fish wire. We'll repeat that same process on the other side. Now with our assistant we'll reinstall our hitch. On the driver's side, we'll just install one of our 10mm bolts. You want to be sure to not push that carriage bolt back up into the frame. We'll install one of our 10mm bolts with conical toothed washer with the teeth facing upwards. Over here on the passenger's side, because we're also going to have to reinstall that exhaust hanger bracket through these two holes, we're only going to put on the conical tooth washer with the teeth facing up towards the hitch and the nut on this back one so we have access to these, but we can let the hitch hang there. In order to reinstall that bracket, we'll take our 10mm hardware and then just put the bracket back in place and line it up with the holes. We can put our 10mm bolt with conical toothed washers and get them started, and then we can get the rest of our hardware started as well. Before we tighten it up, you want to make sure the hitch is centered on the vehicle. With it centered, we can go in, use a 17mm, and tighten up our rear bolts here. On the nut that's on that carriage bolt, that'll be an 11/16. We'll do that same thing on the other side. Once we've got all of our hardware tightened up, we can go back through and torque it to the specification in the instructions. Some of the different hardware has different specs, so you'll want to be sure to torque them correctly. There's bolts that come with the kit that are longer in order to help with reinstalling this heat shield, but what I'm going to do is I'm going to drill a hole right through this section here because that's where this hits and that's just going to allow this to go up a little bit more flush and just fit a little bit better. I'll use that step drill bit just to make it larger. Now we can check the fit on it again. That looks just about right. Now what I'll do is I'll use one of the original ones and put it in the front hole up there because that's still going to butt directly up to the frame. This back one back here, I'm going to use one of the longer 6mm bolts that came with it. It's going to help to make sure that we can reach that hole and tighten it down through the hitch. Then I'll go ahead and tighten these in. Now I can begin reinstalling the exhaust. With the exhaust reinstalled, let's go ahead and take our support strap off so that we don't forget it. I've gone ahead and marked our appearance panel according to the instructions in order to trim out a sections so I can still get it to fit back on. It's your choice if you want to do this or not, you don't have to, but it just helps maintain a little bit cleaner look underneath the vehicle. Now that we made sure that it's cut correctly, we can slide it back up into position here. We'll make sure everything's lined up then we can push two of our little fasteners back onto the studs and then begin to reinstall all our hardware. That's going to complete our look and install of the Draw-Tite Class II trailer hitch receiver, part number 36540, on our 2014 Toyota Camry.

2012 Toyota Camry

etrailer delivered everything quickly and the instructions were very good. Installed this on my 2012 Camry to carry a bike rack only, so this hitch was perfect since it doesn't include a ball mount or ball. Figuring out how to drill the one inch holes in each frame rail was the hardest part - there are not a lot of metal bits that big available - my solution was to use a Harbor Freight #96275 step drill. All in all a great experience with etrailer. 46327

Installation process was just as described! Buy a step bit; it makes drilling the holes for the carriage bolts easy. Pictures show lowered exhaust by 1/2" and use with Kuat Beta 68481

The hitch has worked fine, I have used it on a long distances trip and several shorter ones with any problems. It is a little work to install but that is to be expected. There is a instructions Video on the website to watch on instillation, you can watch before you buy it. I would have gave 5 stars but it had came through the shipping package and knocked some paint off, but didn’t effect the performance. 804398

Again the receiver attached surprisingly easy, with only two holes needing to be drilled. The design hugs tight to the car’s frame and is basically unnoticeable. After a year, the product has held its integrity both structurally and aesthetically. I have absolutely no complaints to date. etrailer.com is a trusted company which stands behind the products they sell, where I’ve made several purchases and have had zero complaints! Make your purchase through etrailer.com and you’ll have no regrets. 763061

Great product! After one year of ownership I am thoroughly pleased with this product and etrailer.com! The drawtite came with all the hardware needed for installation, even the fish wire. The instructional installation video was a great resource, and the hitch bolted right up to my 2012 Toyota Camry SE with dual exhaust. Follow the instructions in the video for an easy DIY install. I've hauled my mountain bikes many miles to many different trailheads in various states with a Kuat NV Base hitch rack mounted to the Drawtite. Those miles have brought many smiles, thanks to these two great products! 730101

This hitch is an amazing bargain. After one year of use, it still looks almost as good as the day I installed it. The only way the hitch could be any better is if it was shipped with the self tapping screw needed to secure the heat shield for your muffler once you trim it to fit around the hitch. Otherwise, I have absolutely no complaints and highly recommend this to anyone. 724569

So far so good. Does scrape on the ground when going over large dips, but taking those at an angle helps. The installation process was a bit harder than what the video makes it look like. As other reviewers have mentioned, it appears they completely removed the exhaust in the installation video. I ended up having to drill the exhaust side hole in the frame at about a 45 degree angle because the exhaust doesn't move enough to allow you to drill straight up. It worked out in the end, but was more of a headache than I bargained for. Additionally, they only show one hole being drilled in the frame in the video. Realize you must repeat this process on the opposite side. Removing the "isolators" from the exhaust is also near impossible without a pry bar, so plan on using one. Overall very happy with the etrailer shipping speed and online instructions/pictures. 672918

Fast delivery and excellent customer service...Received an email upon delivery as follow up for assistance. Installation video very helpful. This was a one person self-install on a 2017 Camry, did not find the enclosed installation instructions very helpful. No lift for my install, done at ground level so managing hitch positioning a bit tricky using jacks. So, suggestion for 1 man installation- *Produce a video showing lift jack placement and hacks to lift/secure hitch ( i used 2 hydraulic jacks) in position for drilling (if needed) and screwing into existing transport bracket threaded holes. *Make it very clear passenger side exhaust bracket holes used for hitch unlike drivers side which uses the transport bracket holes. It can be tricky aligning the hitch with the holes. I have a Prius as well and the hitch (for bikes) much simpler install w/no drilling 668179

I had a mechanic put this hitch on my car. I didn’t hear from him that it was tricky. I did pass on the info that other customers said the heat shield was in the way and might need to drill another hole or two. But honestly I don’t know if this was the case. I love the hitch. I also bought a rubber flexible plug to keep it blocked and clean when not in use. The cover has a wrap around part so I can’t lose the plug if it wiggles out. I would suggest that too. 666866

I received the bumper hitch quickly and in excellent condition. It was priced below the average that I found online. Installation took 57 minutes by the professional installer at [rentail trailer retailer]. It looks good. I still need to buy and install the electrical wiring for the power to the lights on the trailer for my car, but I knew that was not included before I bought it. Also don't forget you have to buy the receiver and ball separately. I have no complaints at all. 665377

Ask the Experts about this Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch

  • Hitch Flex and Use of Support Straps When Hitch Bike Rack is Installed
Trailer hitches have to be able to flex to avoid damage. The metals used in fabrication of a hitch like Draw-Tite # 36540 and Curt # C12107 are selected to allow for this. The mounting brackets on a hitch are not of the same metal formulation as the cross tube. A totally rigid hitch would be more likely to suffer damage. Some flex is okay. Excess motion of a hitch-mounted accessory such as a bike rack is something else. This is why Curt requires use of their stabilizing strap # 18050...

The trailer hitches available for your 2014 Toyota Camry all have essentially the same design, they will hang down from the frame and a crosstube will run behind the hitch receiver from one bracket to the other. I have measured these hitches in the past and found that the Curt # C12107 hangs down a little more than 1/2 inch further than the Draw-Tite # 36540. • Draw Tite Trailer Hitch that Fits 2015 Toyota Camry Hybrid
We are aware that some vehicle manufacturers do not recommend the install of a trailer hitch on them like your 2015 Toyota Camry. But we are also aware that some people are still going to install a hitch if they can and since there is a demand Draw Tite made one as part # 36540 for your vehicle. While we never recommend going against manufacturer recommendations we do carry the hitch for your vehicle. The install video I attached shows a similar 2016 Hybrid model as well.

I checked the owner's manual online for the 2017 Toyota Camry hybrid and all it says is that towing a trailer is not recommended. It doesn't say you can't but it also does not provide a towing capacity for the vehicle. So it is up to you on whether or not you want to go ahead and tow the trailer. I can definitely tell you the hitch, wiring and accessories you will need. For a trailer hitch you can use # 36540. In addition to the hitch you will need a ball mount, # 36071. If the trailer...

  • Is Fascia Trimming Required to Install a Trailer Hitch on a 2015 Toyota Avalon Hybrid
Draw-Tite trailer hitch # 36540 fits all models of the 2015 Toyota Avalon including your hybrid. There is an underbody panel (not visible) that will have to be trimmed or removed to complete the hitch installation. I have included a link to the installation instructions for you. Toyota does not have towing capacity information for hybrid models and may say outright that you cannot tow with he vehicle. If you want to use the hitch for an accessory such as a bike rack or cargo carrier...

  • Is Drilling Required on Installation of Trailer Hitch For 2012 Toyota Camry
I have a couple of trailer hitches that are custom fits for your 2012 Toyota Camry, but they do require a couple holes to be drilled for installation. The Draw-Tite, part # 36540 and the Curt Hitch, part # C12107 will require two holes to be drilled on your vehicles frame. The Curt hitch will also require a couple of holes to be enlarged. They will also require some trimming or removal of an under-body panel. I am including links to the installation instructions of the hitches....

  • Can I Tow A Trailer With A 2013 Toyota Camry?
Per the manufacturer, Toyota does not recommend towing any type of trailer with the 2013 Toyota Camry. The last generation of Toyota Camry's sold here in the U.S. from 2007-2011, had a max tow rating of 1000 lbs. Although I cannot recommend you tow a trailer with your Camry, a trailer hitch such as the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 36540 is perfectly capable of hauling rear mounted accessories such as a bike rack or cargo carrier. I have attached an installation video of the...

The Draw Tite hitch part # 36540 that you referenced has been confirmed as a fit for your 2016 Toyota Camry so it would work well for you. The most popular bike rack we carry that has been confirmed to fit this vehicle is the Swagman XTC2 Bike Rack part # S64670. This rack has a ton of positive reviews from our customers who have tried it. Check out the review video I attached for more info.

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch For 2016 Toyota Camry
When installing a trailer hitch on your 2016 Camry, you will need to drill a couple holes in the frame as you mention. We do have a video of a hitch being installed on a Camry. It is a different year but the installation is the same. All of the hitches we offer for your Camry have a similar installation. The trailer hitch I recommend is the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receiver, part # 36540. This is a Class ll hitch and it has a 1-1/4 inch receiver opening. I recommend this hitch over the...

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for 2013 Toyota Avalon
The Draw-Tite Class II 1-1/4-Inch Trailer Hitch # 36540 is a compatible fit for your 2013 Toyota Avalon. While the receiver tube will be visible beneath your bumper, it should not protrude. There is no welding required to install this item, but some drilling may be required as well as the temporary lowering of the exhaust. I have provided links to the installation instructions for the hitch. I have also included a link to our FAQ page on trailer hitches. If you need trailer wiring...

  • Why Does Curt Trailer Hitch for 2017 Toyota Camry Require Stabilizing Strap
Both the Draw-Tite Class II # 36540 and Curt Class II # C12107 Trailer Hitches confirmed to fit your 2017 Toyota Camry are extremely well-built units. Curt requires that a stabilization strap like # 18050 be used with non-trailer loads (bike racks, cargo carriers) with their lower Class hitches simply as an added safety measure. This is not an indication of its strength or durability. When there is an option, I do usually recommend the Draw-Tite alternative because they do not have...

  • Trailer Hitch & Related Towing Items for 2015 Toyota Avalon Hybrid
You are correct that only 1-1/4-inch Class II hitches are offered for your 2015 Toyota Avalon. The reason no larger hitches are made for the Avalon is that its frame does not have the strength to support a higher-capacity hitch. In fact, it is possible that your owner's manual will indicate that the car itself has a TW rating lower than the two available hitches, and in this case the lower rating becomes the overall limit. The highest-rated option is Curt hitch # C12107 which has a 350-lb...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver And Hitch Expander For 2017 Toyota Camry
The Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class II - 1-1/4" # 36540 you referenced is a confirmed fit for your 2017 Toyota Camry LE. It is a smaller hitch receiver opening, so you will need to use a hitch expander adapter like the MaxxTow Trailer Hitch Receiver Adapter - 1-1/4" (Class II) to 2" Hitch - 11" Long # MT70032. This adapter will decrease the tongue weight capacity of your trailer hitch receiver by 50%. So your max tongue weight capacity with this hitch and expander...

  • 2012 Toyota Camry Hybrid Trailer Hitch Recommendation
For a trailer hitch confirmed to fit your 2012 Toyota Camry Hybrid you would want the Draw Tite hitch part # 36540 that has been confirmed as a fit for the vehicle. This hitch has a 300 lb tongue weight capacity and a 3,500 lb total trailer weight capacity. You would need to also check with Toyota to see what they recommend as towing capacities and be sure not to exceed the lower rating between the two. For a ball use # 19256 for a 1-7/8 inch diameter or # 19258 for a 2 inch diameter....

  • Recommended Ball Mount for Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch on 2014 Toyota Camry
The recommended ball mount for the Draw-Tite # 36540 trailer hitch that fits your 2014 Toyota Camry is the Ball Mount for 1-1/4" Hitch # 36071, which must be used in the rise position only, according to the installation manual of the hitch (which I have linked for you). This ball mount comes with a pin and clip to attach it to your hitch so you will not need to purchase one separately, but you will need a hitch ball. For that you will need to use either 1-7/8" Hitch Ball # 19256 or 2"...

You'd either have to look into a small trailer to tow with your Camry or look into a larger vehicle. For trailer wiring for the Camry you'd want the Tekonsha # 118405. For a ball mount # 3593 and hitch balls # 19256 for a...
