Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2017 Ford Focus - Draw-Tite

Today on our 2017 Ford Focus, we're going to be taking a look at and showing you how to install the draw tight class one custom fit trailer hitch receiver, part number 24872. The crosstube's going to be tucked up behind the bumper nicely, and all we're really going to see is our receiver tube sticking out. It is a class one hitch, so we're going to get that 1 1/4" by 1 1/4" receiver tube opening. Our hitch is going to use a standard 1/2" pinning clip. They're not included, but you can pick some up on our website using part number PC2. Now as far as the safety chain loops are concerned, they're going to be a rolled steel stock style, that's welded to the bottom of our receiver tube and as you can see, we're not going to have too much trouble getting most sized hooks on or off. Now our hitch is going to feature a 200 lb tongue weight, along with a 2,000 lb gross trailer weight rating.

Now, I do want to mention that you always want to double check with the vehicle's owners manual to make sure that your vehicle can handle that amount of weight. Now I'd like to give you a few measurements that will help you when deciding the accessories for your new hitch, such as a bike rack, or even a cargo carrier. From the center of the hitch pin hold to the outermost edge of the bumper is going to be right about 3". From the ground to the inside top edge of the receiver tube opening, it's right around 11 1/2". Now that we've gone over some of the features, let's show you how we get it installed. To begin our installation, we're going to need to lower down our exhaust.

And normally, I would suggest that we put up a strap to hold up our exhaust so that it doesn't fall down far enough, but if we look, our axle back here is gonna keep our exhaust from going down too far. Now on each side, we're going to have a hanger, and we're going to need to remove the two bolts holding the hanger in place. I'm going to be using a 13mm socket to remove these bolts. We're going to go ahead and remove the other side as well. Now, if we bring our attention to the heat shield right underneath where we just lowered our muffler hanger, we're going to need to trim this out. Now the easiest way for me to show you where we're going to trim is I'm going to draw a line.

Basically, what we're going to want to do is we're going to want to trim the flat piece of the heat shield off of the bottom of our frame here. So we're going to need to take out this square section, where our exhaust hanger bolts hit up to, and right where this large hole is. So I'm just going to bend it away a little bit so I can get a pair of tin snips in there, and you can use whatever you have available. It's not very thick. Just pretty thin sheet metal.

And I'm just going to cut straight across. I'm going to bend my heat shield, and I'm going to cut straight across that way now. Now once we have this section trimmed out, I'm going to trim out the other side as well. Now in our kit, they do provide us with some isolator strips right here. Now we're going to want to cut these directly in half. Once we cut them in half, we're going to cut them into fourths. So we're going to cut them in half again. Now what we're going to do with these, is this is going to go in between our hitch here, and our exhaust hanger. So what we're going to need to do is we're going to need to flip our hitch over, and since our exhaust hangers are going to be butting up against our hitch right here, we're going to be putting in the strips on the bottom side of our hitch. So we can take a strip, we can remove the backing and now we're gonna take this strip and we're gonna not want to cover the holes, but we're gonna want to get it as much on the flat surface as we can without covering up any of our access holes for our hardware. Once we have one in place, we're going to go ahead and get the other one in place, and we'll get them all on the other side as well. So if we look at our frame rail, right in between the two weld nuts that are holding our exhaust hanger on, we're gonna have this large oblong hole. Now that's going to be our access hole to get our hardware through, which is eventually going to be coming out this side of our frame rail. Now as we can see, the bolts aren't gonna fit through. So, we're going to need to enlarge this hole. I'm going to be using a rotary bit here, and I'm just going to file it down until I can get my bolt through. You don't need to go crazy, you only want to file it just big enough that you can get your hardware in place. Looks like we can get our hardware in, so we're going to repeat that process for the other side as well. We're going to grab our pull wire, and we're going to find the hole inside of the frame rail that our hardware should be coming out, and we're going to take the coiled end and we're going to feed it into that hole. Now, the main goal here is to be feeding it down to where it comes out our access hole right here. Now what we're going to do now, is we're going to start putting our hardware in place. We're going to take our spacer block, and we're going to feed it over the coiled end of our wire. And then we're going to take our carriage bolts and we're going to thread it onto the end of the wire. Now we can go ahead and push the block into the frame rail, and once we have the block pushed in, we're going to go ahead and push the bolt in as well. Now to make sure everything is in its place, we're going to go ahead and pull the bolt out, just to make sure everything's working properly, but then we're going to push the bolt in but making sure that the fish wire is still hanging out. And we'll go ahead and repeat that same process on the other side. Alright, we're going to get ready to put our hitch in place, but before we do, I'd like to give you an explanation of how and what kind of hardware we're going to be using. Our hitch is going to fit right in between our framerail and our exhaust hanger here, and we're not going to be reusing the factory hardware. Instead, they're going to provide us with new bolts and it's going to be followed by a lock washer and then finally followed by a flat washer, and that's going to go through our exhaust hanger, through the bracket on our hitch, and go back into the factory weld nut. And now with an extra set of hands, we're going to raise our hitch into position, and we're going to want to make sure that we take our pull wires and go through the hitch to our side mounting holes. And once we have the hitch in position, we can go ahead and pull our hardware out through the side of our framerail here, which will help support the hitch. Now we can take our exhaust hanger, line it back up and again using the supplied bolts in our kit, we can secure them into place. Now I'm only going to get these in there hand tight. One on each side, that way I can get the rest of my hardware in place. Now for the hardware on the side of the frame, we're going to remove the pull wire. And I do want to mention, you want to be careful not to let the bolt drop back in. But now to secure it, we're going to take a counter inaudible 00:08:04 tooth washer, and we're going to want to make sure the teeth are facing the hitch, and put that in place. And then we're going to follow it up with a nut. Then we can secure it down. And we're going to repeat the same thing for the other side as well. I'm going to come back and again, using a 13mm socket, I'm going to snug up all my hardware for my exhaust hanger brackets. Now for the hardware on the side of my frame here, I'm going to be using an 11/16 socket to snug it up. And we'll repeat that for the other bolt as well. Again, using an 11/16 socket, I'm going to come back and I'm going to torque down my hardware on the side of my frame, to the specified amount in the instructions. And we're going to repeat that for all the other hardware as well. And that'll finish up our look at the draw tight custom fit class one trailer hitch receiver, part number 24872 on our 2017 Ford Focus.

I love this hitch receiver! It only took me a little over one hour to installed and I didn't have the car on a lift...it was very simple after I watched the video on etrailer.com. What I like about it is the only thing you see when it is installed is the receiver sticks out just a little below the bumper. Some hitches...you see the whole hitch under your bumper...not this one. Great hitch and I was really pleased that I could install it myself. 572844

Product works as expected, and looks nice as it is mostly hidden. The install was surprisingly quick and easy. I expected threading the lug bolt through the frame would be a challenge, but it wasn't bad as long as I was slow and careful. The only issue I had was, as other reviewers have mentioned, the lug bolt head diameter is a bit big to fit inside the frame, so I had to grind them down a little. Excited to use it for my bike rack! 571463

Hi. I got the hitch looks like a great product, but I did not get the wire hardest because they say it was backward, so when it does come in please let me know when you will ship me my wire harness. Thank you 572240

I ordered this 1.25" trailer hitch for my 2013 Ford Focus hatchback. I purchased it along with the Swagman XC-2 bike platform, since it was around the holidays I opted for the free shipping since it was over $100 total and I wasn't in a big hurry to get it installed. Well, I guess www.etailer.com treats their orders much like [site] does. I got the box that contained both the hitch and the bike platform in two days. I was amazed since I hand't paid for any upgrade on the shipping. Nice job guys! Getting into the box, both the hitch and the bike rack were appropriately padded and stapled into place so there was no chance of movement. Both items in new condition coming out of the box. I was surprised to see just one page of documentation for the trailer hitch in the box. It was a general document about hitch installation safety. No biggy, I get it, these guys are called "etrailer.com", point taken. All the supporting documentation and instructional videos are online. Right in my wheel house. I watched the installation video twice before venturing to the garage. Once I got further into the install I then went deeper into their online help and found both diagrams and another general "how to" video on "Using Fish Wire as Bolt Leaders" since I've never worked with one of these before on a car frame. BTW, with all of the videos I've looked at on their site they have a transcript of the video as well, nice touch dudes. Handy if you do want to print them out. The installation went as planned. They'd estimated 40 minutes in their instructions. I gave myself 90 minutes but I finished in just under an hour. I did have trouble with getting the spacer and bolt into place using the fish wire on both sides, thus the peak back online at more help files. I've been thoroughly impressed with multiple aspects of my interaction with www.etrailer.com: 1) Selecting product by vehicle make, model, year, trim 2) Pricing 3) Order processing very quickly 4) Great website instructional videos and documentation I've already placed an order for some other goodies from these folks. I have been recommending them to friends who are looking for hitch options as well. From my experience I can highly recommend this site for the reasons stated above. Thanks, Randy 329465

Product shipped quickly. The installation directions included a step to trim away the heat shield on both sides of the vehicle where the trailer hitch receiver mounted to the bottom of the frame. I did not perform this step in case for some odd reason I ever decided to remove the trailer hitch receiver from the vehicle. Of course, I will be sure to tighten the fasteners again a few times after using the hitch. 464225

Excellent, one detail short of perfect. This hitch is designed and built for a perfect fit for my 2012 Focus Hatchback, with no drilling required, so this is solidly a DIY project. I was able to easily drop the exhaust hangers; lift the hitch into place, insert and tighten the four vertical bolts. However, when I went to fish the two large carriage bolts through the frame rails, I could not get them through the cutout opening, despite manipulating them every possible way. I talked to my local installer at the trailer rental place and hired them to finish the install, but while waiting for the scheduled service date, I phone etrailer to ask if they'd heard of similar difficulties with this hitch. The service/install rep said "no," and suggested I gently file the heads of the carriage bolts just enough to allow them to slip through the access hole in the frame rail. I did this, using the bolting plate as a jig to hold the bolt stationery, and was able to slip the bolt head into the frame rail, fish it through to the bolt hole opening, and complete the install. Woo-hoo! No rubbing or rattling against the frame, the bumper cover, nor the exhaust system. I also asked the service rep about a recommended anti-rattle device; he named the items on their website, but was unable to make a solid recommendation nor give other buyers' feedback. While searching online for similar installs, I read of one who bought a $3.74 "1 1/2" steel rail clamp" from a big box hardware store. I found the clamp at my local location, attached it to the hitch and shank, and the hitch is now rock solid. I'm very pleased with this product, and the DIY nature of it, even considering the mod I needed to make on the carriage bolt head. The provided fish wires were slick, and worked just as described. 467383

Shipping container had a hole where hitch receiver broke through, but no mechanical damage to product. Shipping tape residue on hitch, had to remove with lighter fluid. Some paint imperfections, so I touched up the product with black gloss rustoleum since its being installed under the vehicle. Installation instructions were outstanding. All installation materials were provided. The product fit my Ford Focus Hatchback perfectly, all the dimensions were correct. In summary, a great hitch if sloppily packaged. Recommend. 85640

Ed,I was wondering if you could help me very quickly. Did you have to modify the hitch in any way to have it accept the 1upusa rack? I was told on the phone that none of the Focus hitches would work with my Yakima Holdup rack because they are all Class I. I had a Class I hitch on my previous Corolla and had no issues. The only requirement is that there is at least 2 from the hitch pin hole into the receiver toward the front of the car. I looked up the 1upusa rack and they claim the same requirement. So that leads me to believe that my Yakima rack would work as well. Can you confirm that the hitch has at least 2 of clearance from the hitch pin hole to the backstop? Thanks for any help.

Jesse, I measured hitch pin hole into the receiver toward the front of the car and found it to be 4. Hitch pin hole to rear of receiver is 2. Hope that helps.

This is my third hitch purchase from Etrailer, and they always have the best price. I do not like driving a pickup so I use a small 4x8 utility trailer behind my cars when I need to haul something big. I prefer a hitch that is as close to hidden as possible, and this one comes close - don't think they could have done much better given the muffler in the way. I also prefer a hitch that bolts only to the frame rails, and this one did just that. Took under an hour for the hitch install and another hour plus for the wiring install. Plenty of room to work under my 2015 focus hatchback for install of this hitch. Everything bolted up as designed, and there were no surprises. I did not cut the heat shield for the hitch install because I didn't want to leave it hanging - I will check the bolts a few times a year to make sure they don't back out. I found installing the carriage bolts first to be easiest, then installing the 4 other bolts. Torqued everything to specs and it looks great. I included several pics to show how much of the hitch shows and how far it sticks out from different angles (my primary concern before purchase). Always great communication from Etrailer and great instructional videos. A+ service and support! 276452

Great service, quick delivery! It was very easy to install having never (ever) looked underneath my car before. The only trick was wiggling the bolts through the hole with the pull wire, and having to borrow a torque wrench. I'm so excited by how good it looks. Vacation with bikes here I come! 94166

This is a great hitch that fits well on my 2015 Ford Focus SE Hatchback. It did require that I file the frame a little bit to get 2 of the screws in correctly (as shown on the video) and was a bit difficult to install without elevating the car. It probably took about 2 hours. This is a Class 1 hitch, so it WILL NOT WORK WITH SOME 1.25" YAKIMA PRODUCTS! Be sure to check the compatibility of the product that you will be using it with (i.e. make sure it is Class 1 compatible and not Class 2). I am using this hitch with the Kuat Sherpa 2 platform bike rack and it is working great. It is extremely sturdy and after mounting the hitch receiver, it is extremely easy to use with the rack. The whole kit was missing 2 washers, which was annoying, but not a deal breaker. 234451

I stand by my original review from 1 year ago. The product is still great and I havent touched it once since setting it up a year ago. I would definitely recommend this hitch to friends. The Kuat Sherpa 2 is still going strong and is definitely the nicest bike rack I have ever owned.

!!Warning!! The hitch receiver will not take a Yakima bike rack or anything that is too long for the receiver! My one Glaring gripe with this hitch is the back stop inside the hitch receiver. It will NOT take my Yakima hitch because the male hitch portion is to long and hits the back stop so NOW I have to figure out a way to take the back stop out. I wish I'd seen something on this before purchasing. I would have purchased a different hitch or gotten something else completely. A real disappointment after I got it installed and tried to attach the bike rack to go for a ride. :-( Otherwise Installed relatively easily, watch the install video if you need help it goes over everything. Definitely recommend a second set of hands when lifting into place and setting the bolts into place. I used a Dremel to send off the edge of the to upper mounting bolts so I wasn't sanding off parts of my undercarriage making it more susceptible to rust to get them to fit into the holes worked like a charm. 187957

Comments

Tim, I had the same problem. I wish I had seen your review first. I found out that some of the Yakima racks are made for Class 2 receivers only and this one for the GTI is a Class 1. I did a return and am going with a Kuat rack instead. Hopefully I have better luck.

This hitch was a little tricky to install on my 2013 Ford Focus Sedan as you need to feed bolts through a section of the unibody. All tools needed to perform this task are included and a video is available from www.etrailer.com, so it's pretty easy. The hitch works great for hauling 2 bikes or a small 4'x6' utility trailer. I jacked up the back of my car and installed the hitch exactly as instructed. Took me only one hour to install. I was very impressed with the product, the short ship time (3 days) and the ease of installation using the video. I have purchased many items from Etrailer and have not yet been disappointed . 580095

Iam one that does not like to write reviews but i must say that this hitch is the easiest install i have ever done, the video tutorial is on point. As far as the hitch it is very well made and well worth every penny. I highly recommend this product. 578837

The trailer hitch was delivered pretty fast and packed well! The hitch itself was built well but made in Mexico the only reason for the 4 stars. 506289

I'm very happy with the hitch I ordered. I planned on getting a hitch for the trailer I'm gonna have my mini bike in. The product arrived fast and installation was easy enough. I will definitely be back if I need another hitch in the future. 501006

The trailer hitch has served its purpose nicely. We use it to tow a a small trailer. We installed it ourselves without incident and required no modifications. We would purchase this item again. 498424

Draw-tite receiver hitch fit my 2018 ford focus perfect, it took about 30min. To install. I will definitely purchase another Draw-tite receiver hitch in the future. For the price I don't think you could you could find a better product. 495943

Our hitch has worked out fine. We have used it to mount our bike rack, pull a small camper, and a 4x8 utility trailer about 4,000 miles. Turns our Focus into a workhorse. Thanks etrailer! 475801

I have had this receiver hitch for a year now on my 2014 Ford Focus SE. I use it to mount a bike rack to the car and that's it. Installation was a little tricky with trying to fish everything through the small opening. Once I got past that hurdle, everything was smooth sailing. Overall could not be happier with it. 475765

Installed on Ford focus to pull teardrop of 1000#. Easy install...works fine on our small trailer. Focus dropped mpg's from 41 to 34 while towing at 60-65 mph. Just watch a video before installation and you will have no problems. Hitch is very obscure on back of car. Thanks etrailer. 471625

Third one I have installed. Perfect fit and performs as it should. The frame bolt that you pull thru the frame needs to have the head found on two sides before attempting to pull thru (make sure you do this). Other than this, pretty straightforward. 470624

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for a 2016 Ford Focus
  • The Draw Tite Hitch part # 24872 that you referenced has been confirmed as a fit for your 2016 Ford Focus so I would recommend it for you. I attached an install video for you to check out as well. The most popular bike rack we carry that has been confirmed to fit this vehicle is the Swagman XTC2 Bike Rack part # S64670. This rack has a ton of positive reviews from our customers who have tried it. Check out the review video I attached for more info.

  • Trailer Hitch and Bike Rack Recommendations for a 2012 Ford Focus Hatchback
  • I do have a solution for carrying bikes on your Focus but if the vehicle has a spoiler then it is a no fit situation because the rack cannot be safely installed on the vehicle. The ratcheting cables are actually much more secure and easier to use than straps. The combined weight the # TH9003PRO and 2 average weight bicycles could also cause bumper deformation. The safest way to carry bikes on your 2012 Ford Focus is to install a trailer hitch and use a hitch mount bike rack. For a trailer...

  • Ground Clearance Provided By Draw-Tite # 24863 for Ford Mustang and # 24872 for 2012 Ford Focus
  • Draw-Tite includes a cross-section view on their instruction sheets that will show how the receiver will sit in relation to the bottom of the bumper fascia. On a Mustang V6 model, the bottom of the receiver will sit about 3 inches below the bumper fascia. For a V8 and GT model, the bottom of the receiver will sit about 2 inches under the bottom of the fascia. Measure downward from the bottom of the fascia to ground level, and subtract 2 or 3 inches from that distance, depending on which...

  • Recommendation for a Class I Ford Focus to Transport a Mobility Scooter on a Cargo Carrier
  • You are correct that your 2012 Ford Focus sedan will only support a Class I hitch. However, I cannot recommend that you use your existing cargo carrier, that is designed to be used with a Class III hitch, in a Class I hitch receiver, for both compatibility and safety reasons. Many hitch manufacturers have modified the receiver portion of a Class I hitch to make it only compatible with Class I accessories. A stopper is installed in the Class 1 hitch, this shortens the length of a the...

  • Towing Motorcycles with a 2014 Ford Focus
  • I checked your owner's manual and it states the following: WARNING: Never tow a trailer with this vehicle. Your vehicle is not equipped to tow. No towing packages are available through an authorized dealer. We don't recommend going against what the manufacture says but if you decide to tow your motorcycles anyways here are the parts you will need. The custom fit hitch for your 2014 Ford Focus is # 24872, in addition to the hitch you will need a ball mount and a ball to tow the trailer...

  • Trailer Hitch and Bike Rack Recommendations for a 2012 Ford Focus Sedan
  • To carry a hitch mounted bike rack on your 2012 Ford Focus sedan, you will need to install a trailer hitch. I recommend installing the Draw-Tite SportFrame Trailer Hitch, # 24872. This is a Class I trailer hitch with a 200 lb tongue weight capacity. There are two different styles of hitch mounted bike racks. One of our most popular bike racks is the Swagman XTC-2, # S64670. This is a platform-style bike rack that makes loading and unloading easy. I have attached installation instructions...

  • Draw-Tite and Curt Class I Hitch Comparison for 2014 Ford Focus SE Hatchback
  • All Class I hitches offered for your 2014 Ford Focus SE Hatchback are a light-duty type that offer the same 200-lb tongue weight capacity, but as you note there are some differences between them that may help guide your choice for your cargo basket application. The link provided will let you see all three. The variations in construction do not result in different weight ratings so I would not be concerned about the presence or absence of the collar. The Curt hitch # C11158 requires that...

  • Trailer Hitch and Bike Carrier Recommendations for a 2014 Ford Focus
  • The further the trailer hitch receiver is recessed under the back of a vehicle the less clearance there is for accessories and the harder it is to pin in any accessories to the trailer hitch. The Draw-Tite hitch # 24872 measures 2 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to clear the rear bumper. To me, that is perfect. Curt trailer hitch # C11158 we have installed on a 2012 Focus sedan but not a 2014 hatchback like in the other video so it is really not a fair comparison. But on...

  • Trailer Hitch and Bike Rack Recommendation for a 2016 Ford Focus
  • For your 2016 Ford Focus you would want the Draw Tite hitch part # 24872 for a trailer hitch for use with a bike rack. Since this is a Class I hitch (that means a lower capacity hitch), the only bike racks we offer are ones that can fold away with bikes unloaded like the Kuat Beta part # B202-114. This is a great rack though loaded with features like anti-rattle and anti-sway cradles. f you plan on carrying any womens or alternative framed bikes without horizontal top tubes you may...

  • Bike Rack and Trailer Hitch Recommendations for a 2013 Ford Focus
  • Taking your criteria into consideration I would recommend a hitch and hitch mounted bike rack for your 2013 Ford Focus. The reason I am offering the hitch solution is because by having a hitch it gives you options for towing in the future such as a hitch cargo carrier. If you need a hitch for your vehicle I have the following suggestion: Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch for the 2013 Ford Focus, part # 24872 because not only is it easy to install. This is a 1-1/4 inch hitch. • Why Does the Heat Shield Need to Be Trimmed to Install a Draw Tite Hitch on a 2012 Ford Focus
  • The heat shield will need to be trimmed so that you can bolt up the side brackets of the hitch to the bottom of your vehicle frame. If the heat shield was not removed it would not provide a solid surface for the hitch to attach to. Check out the installation instructions link I attached that shows the area where the heat shield will need to be trimmed.

  • Hitch and Motorcycle Carrying Options for 2012 Ford Focus Hatchback
  • The hitches that are available for your 2012 Focus Hatchback are all Class I hitches, that have a 200 lb tongue weight capacity. This would mean that 200 lbs is the maximum amount of weight that would be suspended from the hitch, which would include the weight of the carrier. I'm sorry to say that you wouldn't be able to carry your bike on a hitch mounted carrier. This being said, you could still install a hitch like the Draw-Tite Hitch # 24872 and carry your bike on a small utility...

I have included a link to the video and a link to the hitch instructions for you. A torque wrench is required for any trailer hitch installation.
