Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2015 Ford Focus - Draw-Tite

Speaker 1: Today on our 2015 Ford Focus, we're going to be taking a look at, and showing you how to install, the Draw-Tite Class One Custom Fit Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number 24872. Here's what our hitch is going to look like. The cross tube is going to be hidden behind the bumper, and all we're going to see is the receiver tube sticking out. It is a class one hitch, which means it's going to give us an inch and a quarter by inch and a quarter receiver tube opening. It's going to be great for a lot of those smaller bike racks or some of the smaller cargo carriers. The way we're going to attach any of our accessories is going to be to the hitch pinhole here in the side. It is going to accept a standard half inch pin and clip. Now, these aren't included in the kit, but you can pick them up on our website at etrailer.com using part number PC2.

As far as the safety chain connection points go, it's going to be a loop style and it will be welded to the bottom of the receiver tube. As you can see, we're going to have plenty of room to get most size hooks on or off, and not have to worry about too much interference. As far as the weight capacity goes, our hitch is going to have a 200 pound tongue weight, which is going to be the maximum downward force at the receiver tube, along with a 2,000 pound gross trailer weight rating. Now with those numbers in mind, you want to double check your Focus' owner's manual to make sure it can handle that amount of weight. Since it is a class one hitch, Draw-Tite does have a specific drawbar that is sold separately that they want you to use if you are doing some light duty towing.I'd like to give you a few measurements that will help you in deciding for accessories for your new hitch, such as a bike rack or a cargo carrier. From the center of the hitch pinhole to the outermost edge of the bumper, going to be right about five and a quarter inches.

That measurement's going to come in handy when you're looking at folding accessories to make sure you have enough clearance between the back of your bumper and the accessory itself. From the ground to the inside top edge of the receiver tube opening, it's going to be right about 11 and one quarter inches. Now at that height, I would recommend a bike rack or a cargo carrier with a raised shank, so you can get added ground clearance. Now that we've seen what our hitch looks like, gone over some of the features, let's show you how to get it installed. To begin our installation, we're going to need to lower our exhaust down. We're going to have two hangers, one on each side of our muffler, that we're going to have to take down. There's going to be two bolts holding the hanger in place.

We're going to use a 13 millimeter socket to pull them out. We'll pull the other side down too. Our exhaust is going to be supported a little bit farther forward right by the rear axle here, so we don't have to worry about it.Our next step is we're going to have to trim our heat shield where our hitch is going to be in place. If we come just forward of that mounting point, going to make a straight line and just right outside the other mounting point. We're going to trim out this section here as well as on the other side. Now, the easiest way to do this, if you just kind of bend that heat shield down a little bit, take a pair of tin snips and just cut straight across.

Make a small cut towards the front and just bend it where you can get a straight line. Then, we'll just cut across. Just want to make sure that this hitch is going to have a solid contact against the frame, so we'll go ahead and trim out the other side as well. The hole in the frame is going to be our access hole to get our hardware in. We're going to have the spacer block, which will fit no problem through the frame. However, our carriage bolt is going to be just slightly too big to fit through the frame. We're going to need to enlarge that hole just big enough so that we can get our hardware in. I'm going to be using a drill with a file attached to it, but you can use a hand file. You just want to file that hole out just enough so that we can get the hardware in. You're going to want to periodically check to make sure you don't file too much. As you can see, we can fit our bolt in. We'll go ahead and file the other side. Now, this isn't required but it's never a good idea to leave exposed metal on your vehicle. I'm going to put a little bit of spray paint to cover it up, and hopefully prevent any kind of rust or corrosion on both sides. Then, we can take our pull wire and we're going to take the coiled end. We're going to feed it in through the hole in the side of our frame. We're going to feed it down until we can get it to come out our access hole. Now, you want to make sure you leave the tail end still coming out of the side of the frame. Then, we're going to take our square spacer block, slide it over to the coiled end and thread our carriage bolt on the end of the wire. Then, one piece at a time, we're going to feed our hardware into the frame. We're going to pull the wire, making sure that we can get the bolt to come out. Once we have the bolt coming out, we're going to go and push it just inside the frame, but leave our pull wire hanging out. We'll repeat that on the other side.Since our hitch is going to be a different material than our exhaust hanger brackets, our kit comes with some plastic isolators that we're going to have to put in place on the bottom bracket of our hitch. We're going to take that plastic isolator, and we're going to cut it in half. Then, on either side of the large hole that's in our hitch bracket, we're going to put one right in-between the two holes. Take the backing off, and then we're going to apply that clear plastic directly to the bottom of the hitch. We'll put the other strip right at the bottom. If it's overlapping, that's okay. You just want to go ahead and cut that hole out, so that we can get our hardware through. We'll repeat that for the other side of the hitch as well. Now, with an extra set of hands, we're going to lift our hitch into place. You're going to want to put the pull wire coming from the inside going to the outside. Then once we have our hitch lifted, we're going to pull our bolt out so it'll help support it. We can go ahead and remove our pull wire. We're going to take a conical tooth washer, we're going to make sure that the teeth are facing the hitch. We can take a hex nut and secure the hitch. We'll do that for both sides. Now, we're going to lift our exhaust up. We're going to line up the holes in our hitch with the holes in our frame, and then raise our exhaust bracket up into position. Then, we're going to be securing it with new hardware provided in our kit. We're going to have a M8 bolt with a lock washer, and then a flat washer. We're going to go through the exhaust hanger, through the hitch and then thread it into the frame. For now, we'll just get them in there hand tight, so we can get the rest of the hardware in.We're going to have two new bolts on each side, so we can go ahead and get the other side in. We can come back with our 13 millimeter socket and snug up our hardware. Then, we can come back with an 11/16th socket, and we can snug up the hardware on the side of our frame. Then, we can come back with the torque wrench, and we're going to torque all of our hardware down to the specified amount in the instructions. We'll repeat that for all of our remaining hardware. That'll finish up your look at the Draw-Tite Class One Custom Fit Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number 24872, on our 2015 Ford Focus.

This hitch was a little tricky to install on my 2013 Ford Focus Sedan as you need to feed bolts through a section of the unibody. All tools needed to perform this task are included and a video is available from www.etrailer.com, so it's pretty easy. The hitch works great for hauling 2 bikes or a small 4'x6' utility trailer. It's been a year and I'm still pleased with this purchase. 517239

This is a great hitch that fits well on my 2015 Ford Focus SE Hatchback. It did require that I file the frame a little bit to get 2 of the screws in correctly (as shown on the video) and was a bit difficult to install without elevating the car. It probably took about 2 hours. This is a Class 1 hitch, so it WILL NOT WORK WITH SOME 1.25" YAKIMA PRODUCTS! Be sure to check the compatibility of the product that you will be using it with (i.e. make sure it is Class 1 compatible and not Class 2). I am using this hitch with the Kuat Sherpa 2 platform bike rack and it is working great. It is extremely sturdy and after mounting the hitch receiver, it is extremely easy to use with the rack. The whole kit was missing 2 washers, which was annoying, but not a deal breaker. 234451

I stand by my original review from 1 year ago. The product is still great and I havent touched it once since setting it up a year ago. I would definitely recommend this hitch to friends. The Kuat Sherpa 2 is still going strong and is definitely the nicest bike rack I have ever owned.

Easy install...about 45 min. Video on installation is very helpful. Hitch fits like a glove. You could do this by yourself, but with a helper is the way to go. Going to use the hitch for a bike carrier. 551723

Nice hitch, mostly hidden, easy to install, fit like it should, and works great with our bike rack although rugged enough for a small trailer beghind our 2014 Ford Focus Hatchback. 570989

Product works as expected, and looks nice as it is mostly hidden. The install was surprisingly quick and easy. I expected threading the lug bolt through the frame would be a challenge, but it wasn't bad as long as I was slow and careful. The only issue I had was, as other reviewers have mentioned, the lug bolt head diameter is a bit big to fit inside the frame, so I had to grind them down a little. Excited to use it for my bike rack! 571463

Shipping container had a hole where hitch receiver broke through, but no mechanical damage to product. Shipping tape residue on hitch, had to remove with lighter fluid. Some paint imperfections, so I touched up the product with black gloss rustoleum since its being installed under the vehicle. Installation instructions were outstanding. All installation materials were provided. The product fit my Ford Focus Hatchback perfectly, all the dimensions were correct. In summary, a great hitch if sloppily packaged. Recommend. 85640

Ed,I was wondering if you could help me very quickly. Did you have to modify the hitch in any way to have it accept the 1upusa rack? I was told on the phone that none of the Focus hitches would work with my Yakima Holdup rack because they are all Class I. I had a Class I hitch on my previous Corolla and had no issues. The only requirement is that there is at least 2 from the hitch pin hole into the receiver toward the front of the car. I looked up the 1upusa rack and they claim the same requirement. So that leads me to believe that my Yakima rack would work as well. Can you confirm that the hitch has at least 2 of clearance from the hitch pin hole to the backstop? Thanks for any help.

Jesse, I measured hitch pin hole into the receiver toward the front of the car and found it to be 4. Hitch pin hole to rear of receiver is 2. Hope that helps.

I ordered this 1.25" trailer hitch for my 2013 Ford Focus hatchback. I purchased it along with the Swagman XC-2 bike platform, since it was around the holidays I opted for the free shipping since it was over $100 total and I wasn't in a big hurry to get it installed. Well, I guess www.etailer.com treats their orders much like [site] does. I got the box that contained both the hitch and the bike platform in two days. I was amazed since I hand't paid for any upgrade on the shipping. Nice job guys! Getting into the box, both the hitch and the bike rack were appropriately padded and stapled into place so there was no chance of movement. Both items in new condition coming out of the box. I was surprised to see just one page of documentation for the trailer hitch in the box. It was a general document about hitch installation safety. No biggy, I get it, these guys are called "etrailer.com", point taken. All the supporting documentation and instructional videos are online. Right in my wheel house. I watched the installation video twice before venturing to the garage. Once I got further into the install I then went deeper into their online help and found both diagrams and another general "how to" video on "Using Fish Wire as Bolt Leaders" since I've never worked with one of these before on a car frame. BTW, with all of the videos I've looked at on their site they have a transcript of the video as well, nice touch dudes. Handy if you do want to print them out. The installation went as planned. They'd estimated 40 minutes in their instructions. I gave myself 90 minutes but I finished in just under an hour. I did have trouble with getting the spacer and bolt into place using the fish wire on both sides, thus the peak back online at more help files. I've been thoroughly impressed with multiple aspects of my interaction with www.etrailer.com: 1) Selecting product by vehicle make, model, year, trim 2) Pricing 3) Order processing very quickly 4) Great website instructional videos and documentation I've already placed an order for some other goodies from these folks. I have been recommending them to friends who are looking for hitch options as well. From my experience I can highly recommend this site for the reasons stated above. Thanks, Randy 329465

Product shipped quickly. The installation directions included a step to trim away the heat shield on both sides of the vehicle where the trailer hitch receiver mounted to the bottom of the frame. I did not perform this step in case for some odd reason I ever decided to remove the trailer hitch receiver from the vehicle. Of course, I will be sure to tighten the fasteners again a few times after using the hitch. 464225

For shipping, very fast. I ordered and received in a week. Installation. It took me about a hour and 15 minutes start to finish. This includes getting my tools and car ready. I installed by myself. I had watched the installation video prior to starting. The video made it simple. I already have a bike rack and a luggage rack. I will watch for a small utility trailer now. 548833

This is my third hitch purchase from Etrailer, and they always have the best price. I do not like driving a pickup so I use a small 4x8 utility trailer behind my cars when I need to haul something big. I prefer a hitch that is as close to hidden as possible, and this one comes close - don't think they could have done much better given the muffler in the way. I also prefer a hitch that bolts only to the frame rails, and this one did just that. Took under an hour for the hitch install and another hour plus for the wiring install. Plenty of room to work under my 2015 focus hatchback for install of this hitch. Everything bolted up as designed, and there were no surprises. I did not cut the heat shield for the hitch install because I didn't want to leave it hanging - I will check the bolts a few times a year to make sure they don't back out. I found installing the carriage bolts first to be easiest, then installing the 4 other bolts. Torqued everything to specs and it looks great. I included several pics to show how much of the hitch shows and how far it sticks out from different angles (my primary concern before purchase). Always great communication from Etrailer and great instructional videos. A+ service and support! 276452

Excellent, one detail short of perfect. This hitch is designed and built for a perfect fit for my 2012 Focus Hatchback, with no drilling required, so this is solidly a DIY project. I was able to easily drop the exhaust hangers; lift the hitch into place, insert and tighten the four vertical bolts. However, when I went to fish the two large carriage bolts through the frame rails, I could not get them through the cutout opening, despite manipulating them every possible way. I talked to my local installer at the trailer rental place and hired them to finish the install, but while waiting for the scheduled service date, I phone etrailer to ask if they'd heard of similar difficulties with this hitch. The service/install rep said "no," and suggested I gently file the heads of the carriage bolts just enough to allow them to slip through the access hole in the frame rail. I did this, using the bolting plate as a jig to hold the bolt stationery, and was able to slip the bolt head into the frame rail, fish it through to the bolt hole opening, and complete the install. Woo-hoo! No rubbing or rattling against the frame, the bumper cover, nor the exhaust system. I also asked the service rep about a recommended anti-rattle device; he named the items on their website, but was unable to make a solid recommendation nor give other buyers' feedback. While searching online for similar installs, I read of one who bought a $3.74 "1 1/2" steel rail clamp" from a big box hardware store. I found the clamp at my local location, attached it to the hitch and shank, and the hitch is now rock solid. I'm very pleased with this product, and the DIY nature of it, even considering the mod I needed to make on the carriage bolt head. The provided fish wires were slick, and worked just as described. 467383

I love this hitch receiver! It only took me a little over one hour to installed and I didn't have the car on a lift...it was very simple after I watched the video on etrailer.com. What I like about it is the only thing you see when it is installed is the receiver sticks out just a little below the bumper. Some hitches...you see the whole hitch under your bumper...not this one. Great hitch and I was really pleased that I could install it myself. 572844

Hitch was great, easy to install. I never installed the wire harness because I found in my manual that towing a trailer with a Ford Focus voids my warranty. I only use the hitch for a bike rack rather than have my transmission fail and not be covered. 715102

Can’t say enough how easy this was to install. My dad is a mechanic so I’ve been around this type of stuff but never really enjoyed doing it. I was able to install this by myself in about 2 hours from start to finish. This included time to get the car lifted and find all my tools and clean up afterword. The install itself is quite easy and the final product is awesome. I like this hitch because it doesn’t require me to do severe damage to my car. I have a lease and this hitch meant that I can take my bike with me without having to take a hit at lease end. Thank you etrailer! 679257

This hitch required no drilling of the frame, which I didn't want to do. I was able to install by myself in about an hour with the use of a jack and jack stands to help support it. Watched the video and Yes! it was that easy. Really impressed with how everything went. It's only a Class 1 hitch, but I installed it on a Ford Focus and the only thing I'm ever gonna use it for is a bike rack to haul my bikes around. Would definitely recommend this hitch! 667745

NEITHER the instructions nor the etrailer video mentioned that the upper carriage bolt that must be feed through an opening in the frame is TOO BIG to fit through that opening on our Ford Focus. One of the selling points of this model was that no drilling was required. True. But there was filing or grinding needed. So that was a little misleading. An online video we found helped with this. Thankfully we had the tools handy to perform the modifications. This made it take longer than the predicted 40 min install time. In spite of all that I would still choose this model of others. I think that upper bolt gives it more stability. 665226

The online videos are exceptional. We had everything installed in less than half the time that I told my wife-- which left me and my dad time for an icy cold draft and still was back home before my timeline. DIY jobs always seem to have a catch, right? I expect to hit the hardware store at least a couple times, to patch or fix something that was missing/wrong/broken, BUT didn't need to... Honestly, it was probably the most succinct DIY job that I've ever had. Did I say that the install videos are priceless? No? Well, let it be said, PRICELESS... so, so solid! 662905

It was very easy to put assemble and I love the ease of use and look of it. My only complaint would be that the foam wore away on the hook that goes over the bike crossbar in the first year. That is just a minor detail though. 644075

Every thing is good now. When I got the hitch mounted to the car I found that there was weld inside the tube that the receiver slides in. Had to file this out by hand because it was beyond the pin hole. 636222

Comments

The stop you describe in the receiver tube is actually purposely put there by the hitch manufacturer. Its purpose is to prevent higher-rated Class II hitch accessories from being used in, and possibly overloading the Class I hitch.

Quick and easy installation. This is the only brand to utilize existing holes. The Curt brand may have a 'dressed up' flange but it isn't adding to the integrity of the hitches capacity. Besides, who wants to drill additional holes in their frame? 628189

Product fits well, but using the fish wire tool became frustrating. It is difficult to align the bolt with the tool, especially frustrating without the assistance of a lift. Product is well made and well packaged. 617217

Ask the Experts about this Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch

Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • Trailer Hitch and Bike Rack Recommendation for 2018 Ford Focus
  • For your 2018 Ford Focus the trailer hitch I recommend is the Draw Tite part # 24872 for if you have a Sedan, Hatchback S, SE, or Titanium or part # 24977 for if you have the Hatchback RS. For bike rack applications the Draw Tite hitches are better than the Curts as they do not require the stabilizer strap with bike racks like the Curt hitches do. These hitches also have concealed crosstubes too which make them much less visible than most hitches. I attached an install video link and picture...

  • Trailer Hitch and Towing Components Needed for 2014 Ford Focus
  • The towing capacities of a vehicle are typically very conservatively figured so as long as you are staying under the capacity of your 2014 Ford Focus you'd be totally fine. For your 2014 Ford Focus the Draw Tite hitch part # 24872 would be the hitch to go with. This fits sedans and hatchback models too. For trailer wiring you'd then want the part # 118549 for if you have a hatchback or part # 118548 for if you have a sedan. Tekonsha wiring kits are the most reliable so they are what we...

  • 2 inch opening trailer hitches are reserved for larger vehicles like SUVs and trucks, for you 2013 Ford Focus ST Hatchback you would have to go with a 1-1/4 inch hitch like the part # 24872 which has been confirmed as a fit. The most popular bike rack we carry that has been confirmed to fit this vehicle is the Swagman XTC2 Bike Rack part # S64670. This rack has a ton of positive reviews from our customers who have tried it. Check out the review video I attached for more info.

  • Parts Needed to Tow 2 Seadoos with a 2012 Ford Focus
  • My advice would be to bring sunscreen and have a good time! Based on the weight of your trailer and Seadoos you should be fine to use the Draw Tite Hitch part # 24872 on your 2012 Ford Focus to make the trip. You will need a few other components if you don't have them already. You will need trailer wiring for your vehicle, for that I would recommend the part # C56140 if you have a hatchback or part # C56138 if you have a sedan. For a ball mount you would want the part # 3593, for...

The most popular bike rack we carry that has been confirmed to fit this vehicle is the Thule Roadway 2 part # TH912XTR. • Carriage Bolts Wont Fit Through Frame Access Holes When Installing Hitch # 24872 on 2014 Ford Focus
  • According to the installation instructions for the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch, # 24872, you should use a file to enlarge the frame access hole on your 2014 Ford Focus. You will want to enlarge the hole just enough to get the hardware through. I have attached a snapshot of the instructions with this section highlighted. We do not recommend altering or modifying the mounting hardware in any way.

You will need ball mount number 3593. I attached an install video for you to check as well. You will also need a hitch ball to complete the connection. • Can a 2 Inch Cargo Carrier Be Used on a 2017 Ford Focus
  • I do have options for you but they currently only offer a 1-1/4" trailer hitch receiver for your 2017 Ford Focus. For this, I recommend using the Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 24872 which is a Class I hitch with a 1-1/4" receiver tube opening. In order to use a cargo carrier with a 2" shank you would also need an adapter like part # MT70032. However, using an adapter will reduce your hitch's weight capacity by 50 percent. • Trailer Hitch Mount Bike Rack Will Not Slide All the Way in Receiver on 2014 Ford Focus Hatchback
  • You have a Class I trailer hitch and what you are describing is a stop that was intentionally punched in the receiver of the hitch. It is there to prevent the use of Class II accessories that could lead to the hitch being overloaded. Your bike rack must be a Class II only 1-1/4 inch rack. If you want to use a bike rack then you have to make sure it is rated for use with a Class I trailer hitch. Also, with a bike rack, you are limited to 2 bikes maximum on a Class I hitch. • Recommendation for a Class I Ford Focus to Transport a Mobility Scooter on a Cargo Carrier
  • You are correct that your 2012 Ford Focus sedan will only support a Class I hitch. However, I cannot recommend that you use your existing cargo carrier, that is designed to be used with a Class III hitch, in a Class I hitch receiver, for both compatibility and safety reasons. Many hitch manufacturers have modified the receiver portion of a Class I hitch to make it only compatible with Class I accessories. • Why Does the Heat Shield Need to Be Trimmed to Install a Draw Tite Hitch on a 2012 Ford Focus
  • The heat shield will need to be trimmed so that you can bolt up the side brackets of the hitch to the bottom of your vehicle frame. • Trailer Hitch and Bike Carrier Recommendations for a 2014 Ford Focus
  • The further the trailer hitch receiver is recessed under the back of a vehicle the less clearance there is for accessories and the harder it is to pin in any accessories to the trailer hitch. The Draw-Tite hitch # 24872 measures 2 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to clear the rear bumper. To me, that is perfect. Curt trailer hitch # C11158 we have installed on a 2012 Focus sedan but not a 2014 hatchback like in the other video so it is really not a fair comparison. But on...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver And Cargo Carrier For 2016 Ford Focus

This trailer hitch receiver is rated for a 200 lb tongue weight and a 2000 lb towing weight. This is a very well made hitch that will allow you to carry a bike rack or cargo carrier. Provided the combined weight of the carrier used and the electric scooter does not exceed the tongue weight capacity of the hitch such as # 24872 (200 pounds) you will be good to go. • It is not too unusual for trimming of a vehicle heat shield to be required when installing an aftermarket hitch like the Draw-Tite # 24872 that fits your 2014 Ford Focus. In some cases simply bending the shield can be enough but in other cases the part is best trimmed and then re-installed.
