Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2013 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen - Draw-Tite

Today on our 2013 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagon we're going to take a look at and show you how to install the Draw-Tite SportFrame trailer hitch receiver. This is a custom fit class one trailer hitch with an 1-1/4" opening. Its part number is 24866. Now here's what our hitch is going to look like once we get it installed on the vehicle. As you can see, you see it all the way across here. It's going to tuck up over our muffler on this side so we won't have to worry about moving that.

Then we've got the longer bar for our middle support. That runs up just underneath our wheel well area here at the back. It's a class one hitch so we're going to have options as far as bike racks go. Typically limited to two, or also light duty hauling. Now the hitch is going to offer us a 200 pound tongue weight rating, that's the maximum amount of downward force we can apply to the tongue, and a 2,000 pound gross trailer weight rating, which is going to be the total of the trailer and everything we've got loaded. We'll want to look into the owners manual just to make sure our Jetta can handle these loads.

If not, we'll go off of whichever is the lowest. Our hitch is going to have a 1/2" pinhole diameter, so all the 1/2" pinhole accessories will work out fine. We've got an 1-1/4" by 1-1/4" opening here at the rear and plenty of room for our safety chains to connect in whether we're doing a trailer or maybe we need the extra support with a strap. Now a few measurements that will be helpful in selecting our ball mount or maybe bike rack. These will be from the ground to the inside top edge of our receiver tube opening. We have about 9-3/4".

From the center of our hitch pinhole to the outermost edge of our bumper it's about 3-3/4. We'll begin our installation here under the passenger side. What we're going to do is remove the three Torx bolts around the perimeter, and then the two plastic hex nuts that we have here in the middle. Now we'll grab a pair of pliers, or you could use a socket if you want to and just back these off. Then we'll just pull that down.

In this case we'll return it to our customer. Now it's time to lower the exhaust down a little bit. We've got a rubber hanger located here just in front of the rear axle that we'll be removing. Then there's also two bolts in the hanger back here that we're going to be taking out. Now just for good measure it's always a good idea to give your exhaust a little support from the underside here. We're just going to use a cam buckle strap. That way when we release those it can come down and rest right on there for us. For the hanger here just in front of that rear axle we're going to use a little bit of penetrating oil or a little lubricant, just help it slide off. Then we can head back here and take out the two bolts. We'll just allow that to come down and rest on our strap. Now I'm going to move this exhaust isolator down and you'll see the two small tabs here, one on each side. We need to bend those up. Now we'll also remove the three bolts that are holding our vapor canister up into place. Then we've got our last one tucked up right under the rear bumper cover here. Then we can just let that come down a little bit just like that. Now let's take our fish wire, let's bring it in through the hole that's right here in the side of the frame and push it back towards the rear. We're going to be using that access hole right there. We'll feed that in far enough you can see our wire poking out right here. We'll grab that with some pliers and guide it out just like that. We're going to grab our spacer block and feed that on, and then thread on our carriage bolt. We'll guide those up into our frame rail separately. Now with that waiting, we'll take our handle nut now. We want this to be right over our center hole location right here. We'll get a rough idea of about how long that straight section will need to be. Then we'll grab it back here and give it a bend, feed it back in. Then we'll want that, as you can see there, just to be resting right over top of that hole so we can thread our bolt in. Now we're going to take the spacer block and we need to position that so it's sitting just underneath the hitch there. Use a piece of tape just to hold that in place. Then we can just poke out the middle of it there. That will leave us ready to bring our hitch right up into place. Now as we raise the hitch into position we want to start our fish wire right here through our spacer and also our hitch. Just guide it over. We'll start our hex bolt with a conical tooth washer here on this side. You want those teeth to be facing up. We want to get that started right into that handle nut that we had up there. Here on the driver side we're going to rotate our exhaust bracket back up into place. Then we'll go right through that, through the hitch, into the holes that our exhaust hanger was in before. Once we've got one of these started well and our one started on the other side, we can allow the hitch to hang while we get the rest of our fasteners taken care of. Now we can pull off our fish wire. We want to be careful not to let the bolt drop back into the frame. Onto that we're going to add one of the conical tooth washers and then thread on our hex nut. With all of our exterior fasteners in place, let's head into the trunk. Let's remove our . any coverings or anything you might have on the floor. We need to gain access in here to our spare tire area. Now we can see the plug right here that we that we want to remove. Then you'll see our hitch lined up just below it there. Here on the top side we're going to bring in the large spacer block, allow that to go right down in through our hitch. What we'll do is just seal up any of the openings that we have here. We'll take a little bit right around the main portion. We're trying to seal any exhaust gasses or any water from getting inside of the vehicle here. What that down, that will seal the bottom, and a little bit on each side there will take care of the side portion. Perfect. That's all we really need to do here in the trunk so let's get our spare tire and everything else put back into place. Now let's go around to the underside and we'll put a conical tooth washer on here and the hex nut that's provided. Now we use the 1/2" carriage bolt for this area and the 7/16 goes on that passenger side. You'll see the difference between the two. Let's just snug everything up temporarily for now. Now we'll go through and torque everything down to the specifications listed on the instructions. Now we can get our vapor canister put back up into place here. We're also going to put the one Torx bolt back in here on the very rear side. This will actually hold our fascia up into place. The two on the side, that was just for that panel, but the one back here we want to put back in. Now let's get that rubber isolator put back on our exhaust and we'll be ready to hit the road. We'll hit this with a little bit of spray lubricant just like before, help us a little bit get it on there. There we go. Now we're good to pull down our strap and our hitch is in. That will complete today's installation of the Hidden Hitch custom fit class one trailer hitch receiver, part number 60283, on our 2013 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagon. That's going to complete today's installation of the Draw-Tite class one SportsFrame trailer hitch receiver, part number 24866, on our 2013 Volkswagon jetta SportWagon.

You get what you pay for. Nothing like dealing with metric and SAE hardware for an install. Also, they sent me a bolt that was way too short for the passenger side of the frame. I had to run to get my own so I could finish the job. Not a terrible install, once you get past the fish wire and mixed hardware. I did it myself with ramps without too much of a problem. Pre-drilled holes did not align easily....definitely get the exhaust bolts threaded first because there is no room to maneuver anything. It works for what I wanted it to do, which is carry a platform so I can transport deer without getting my interior messy. For the money, I think it has been worth it. But it won't last. Its pretty soft steel with a weak paint job...mine is already rusting. 609534

Fit perfectly on my 2006 TDI. Install was a little fiddly on my own, but with a set of ramps and a bottle jack to hold the hitch up, it was installed in about an hour. Each mounting holes uses a different sized bolt and corresponding hardware. Spend a moment or two to make sure you have the right bolt in the right place. The instructions are a little vague, but the video on the product site is excellent. I installed the matching wire harness at the same time. Start to finish install time for the hitch and wiring harness was about 3 hours. I plan to use this to haul a small pop-up camper. 600470

Hitch came in great condition. Tight fit under the 2006 Jetta without a lift. Watched the video on your web site and followed the directions. Took me about 2 hours, but would be much easier if you have a lift. Richard 555197

Happy with the end result, but install was a bit more difficult than the video makes it out to be (the bolt/spacer that needs to be fed thru the frame). 97722

Once mounted, this seems to be a very solid unit. It is well built out of heavy stock. The time estimate of 1 hour for install was quite a bit less than what it took for me to get the hitch mounted up. Watching the install video helped although it is for a slightly different model and the instruction sheet was not all that clear on the first few readings (it made sense once I was done). My hitch took close to 3 hours for the complete installation. The two bolt holes on exhaust hanger bracket needed to be enlarged in order to align with existing mount on the car and longer bolts were needed to initially draw that side up to a point where the bolts included with the hitch would thread into existing holes. 39225

Here's a picture of my new trailer hitch from etrailer.com on my VW Jetta, it was awful to install , but after 3 1/2 hours my cousin and I figured out what the instructions were attempting to mean 27516

Delivery was outstanding. Product installed as intended, but can be tricky the first time. Product fits well and secure. The only issue is that the product's protective coating is weak and corrison starts within a few weeks. Overall good product for the price.. 594730

This purchase was great on 2 of 3 aspects: 1. e-trailer service was very good. Again. 2. The hitch itself seems fine. It's beefy and mine was well painted. The design seems solid and inspires confidence and earned 5 stars. 3. Installation - not so much, resulting in at least a 1 star debit. Most of the blame goes to the instructions, as others have noted. Don't even attempt this without reading carefully and watching the video a couple times - either by itself is insufficient. Despite that, I had more trouble than with the difficulty 9 (of 10) hitch on my Golf. The issues: a. It's difficult to tell the hardware apart and there are quite a few pieces of similar size. Ditto with the spacers - there's no clear statement about which goes where and it's easy to use the wrong washer, etc., requiring back tracking. b. The written instructions say you must lower an exhaust isolator in front of the rear axle but doesn't indicate how (it's not obvious) ... the video doesn't even mention it. c. The pull wire must be fished empty, the bolt and spacer added, and then the wire is pulled back. The written instructions don't even hint at that (although the video shows it) and it's not hard to waste 45 minutes that way. Don't ask how I know. d. Both sets of instructions say to remove the spare tire well plug, but that leaves a much larger hole than necessary. You can cut just the center of the plug away ... and leave less room for leakage, etc. A smaller opening will be better sealed, e. The instructions say not to re-install the plastic fascia on the passenger side. Well, why not? Does Draw-Tite really think VW wasted money with that part .... or do they think a lower difficulty score is more important than maintaining the integrity of your car's design? Clearly, the panel improves aerodynamics under the car (fuel economy at speed) and keeps that area cleaner in bad weather with salty roads. Yes, you can cut the panel and put it back on, but that will take you a lot longer because Draw-Tite provided no measurements and they're difficult to take yourself. You'll need many sessions with your cutting tool (successive approximation) if you want to do a reasonable job. 565592

Trailer hitch receiver is well built however I wish it would give a bit more clearance, seams like there is planty enough room between the bumper and receiver to mount it higher we will see how it will work in the winter 410223

Finish Quality: The finish of the part that shows was very good. The parts that you only see if you install this hitch yourself were not so good. There were chips on some of the corners where bare metal was showing. I was disappointed, but didn't want to hassle with sending it back, so I ended up repainting most of the hitch. Design Quality: I had a lot of trouble getting the 2 bolts on the muffler side started. I had started the bolts on the other side because fishing the bolts through seemed the harder task. Even with that side loosely bolted, it took a while to get enough alignment to start the bolts on the other side. I wonder if the dimensions were off just enough. Also it looks a tad crooked compared to the bottom of the bumper. Not awful, but enough that you notice if you look closely. Direction Quality: With the exception of suggesting starting the muffler side bolts first, the instructions were fine. 24248

Super easy to install and fits perfect. It took less than an hour to install thanks to the helpful installation video on the website. Also, the customer service was great when I called in with a couple of questions about the hitch and 2” adapter for my 2012 Volkswagen Jetta Sportswagon TDI, and it came a day earlier than expected. 567520

This is the second hitch I've bought from eTrailer, one for my wife's CRV and this one for my Jetta Sportwagon. No surprises, just a quality hitch delivered promptly by eTrailer. Installation process went just like the video explained. Thanks for the great service. 77750

The hitch has been working very well - it still looks like new and has performed flawlessly. I use it to pull the folding trailer that I purchased from eTrailer. My only wish is that the receiver receptacle was sized more closely to the size of the ball mount shaft. Presently, the shaft fits somewhat loosely and klunks frequently heard inside the car when the trailer is being pulled, especially when its empty. The loose fit is obvious when installing the ball mount shaft into the receiver. If you have any ideas about how to shim the loose fit, Id like to know.

There are a lot of anti-rattle devices on the market to remedy such a problem. There has to be a certain amount of slack in order to get the device in and out. It's not dangerous by any means, but it can be noisy and irritating. I've added a link to the anti-rattle devices we have. Make sure to look at the ones sized for your hitch.

You need a well stocked tool chest to complete this job. I only give it three stars because I had to install the hitch twice. The first time I was sent a defective hitch, the bracket that goes under the exhaust hanger had been welded on backwards, not leaving room for the bracket.. The customer service at etrailer confirmed that it was defective, sending me a new one. Put the car back together, wait a week for the new one, do it all over again. Second time around it took me about an hour to install, since I knew exactly what needed to be done. The one thing which I did which was not in the instructions was to reinstall the panel on the passenger side. The instructions tell the installer to give the panel to the car owner, I suppose to hold onto. I simply cut a slot in the panel with a hand saw to go around the hitch and put it back in place to keep dirt and crud away. 657693

One of the holes that aligns with the exhaust was not perfectly align. Shaved it down just a little bit fairly easily but it took a while because all I had was a Dremel. Other than that, decent product for the price it seems. 653974

I can tell that it's very sturdy and well made. I have no doubt that it will stay on my car. The only issue I have with it is the installation. You could technically do it yourself, but I'm not very mechanically inclined so I'm going to have it installed. Other than that, solid product. 514809

Looks like I received someone else’s returned hitch as it is scratched up. Not that it matters on the function ability of it but quality control was lacking. Nobody likes to pay for a used product when you think you are getting new. Prices are great. A little look over and some black paint would have made it look new before shipping out. I will buy from you again when needed. 479301

5 stars for etrailer. I do appreciate the very fast shipping. Not 5 for the hitch. Receiver is to shallow for many draw bars of the same class. Safety clip will not go into the hole, so you have to find a more shallow draw bar. All they had to do was make it hollow and not cap it off. A curved draw bar mounts too low and has to be turned upside down to make it high enough. Video is just barely helpful. I would like to see the "go ahead guy" try to install one by himself, without a lift on a garage floor. The 1 hour installation goes into 6-8 hours. Not EZ. The written instructions although frequently described as worthless, are actually very helpful in one takes the time to fully read them and understand. 469497

Tricky to install, but works well if you carefully follow the instructions. The instructions would be more helpful if the had orientation of front / rear/ left side/ right side on the pictures. Hitch is sturdy and snug working very nicely on my 2009 Jetta. 468797

Great Product and price. Install takes a first timer a bit longer than the 1hr suggested time, but if you follow the video on your phone while your there with your car jacked up it is a no problem install. Yes, you need two people or a good jack stand to perform this install. 402962

Installed the hitch on my daughter's Jetta yesterday so they could use a hitch mounted bike rack. Written/printed instructions were OK but the printed image didn't help at all with the hardware. I used the parts list to lay out which parts were which, going along with the written instructions, but as always, the etrailer installation video was the greatest help. I pretty much have to do everything one handed, so it took me much longer than the recommended time, but once I got the wire-fed bolt/plate in place, the rest was pretty easy. If I had time and access to a lift, it would have gone a lot faster, but the ramps I used for oil changes worked OK. This is the second hitch I installed from etrailer - always a pleasure to do business with. 368350

Package was received very quickly. Installation on vehicle was done today, Wednesday. There were 3 issues with the product: 1) The package had one instruction sheet Spanish only (I went back to your website to print out the English one) 2) Wrong sized nut (too small) provided for 7/16. Had to purchase the correct size. 3) Welding slag remnant in receiver preventing use of the hitch. The slag had to be removed. Other than that, installation went smoothly. 168981

Installation was pretty much like the video on the web site. I did it alone, and if you can it would help to have an extra set of hand as the video states. The splash panel on the passenger side that was removed and not replaced in the video, I did replace after trimming a bit off the back. It is plastic so it was quite easy to cut, I think it is worth replacing. Now, I hope there is an instruction video for the wiring as good... 168905

The written instructions were garbage. Simply put, too much information on an 8x11 sheet of paper with a crappy diagram to follow. After watching the video about a dozen times, it started to make sense. Package arrived with a huge hole in the box. About half way through the installation, I realized I was missing a nut (didn't come with original hardware). After all of that, the hitch works great. Carries a 4 bike rack with no problems. Tows my small utility trailer with ease. 153394

So far so good, although the hitch arrived poking through the box and with some small scratches on the ball mount. Not etrailer's fault. Installation took longer than advertised, some of it my fault because I fed the block into the frame the wrong way...the block apparently has to go in oval hole first. The bolt would not protrude straight from the frame with the block inserted the other way. I had to back the bolt and block out of the hole in the frame (which must have taken 20 minutes) and re-insert. The video does show the correct orientation. After that, it went pretty smoothly, and the hitch looks great! The installation video was VERY helpful, way more information than the single-sheet installation instructions. We will mainly use this to mount a bike rack. 139538

Great service. Package was ripped and crushed but I'm sure that was the post office's fault. 137109

Ask the Experts about this Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch
Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • Choosing Hitch Installation on 2014 VW Jetta Sportwagen TDI and 2015 Volkswagen Passat 2.0L TDI
  • In a light-duty towing application like yours, to be perfectly honest, if it were my money I would choose the lowest cost hitch for whichever car you choose to equip with a hitch. All have identical capacities. For the 2014 VW Jetta Sportwagen TDI we have two compatible hitches, the Draw-Tite 1-1/4-inch Class I Sportframe Trailer Hitch # 24866 which will install on the Jetta's frame, and the 2-inch EcoHitch # 306-X7284 which does install at the bumper mounts. Both are shown on the linked...

  • Which Trailer Hitch Fits 2014 Volkswagen Jetta Sportwagen TDI
  • The Curt hitch part # C11474 that you referenced actually replaced the part number 11072 that you mentioned. That said the only hitch we have confirmed as a fit for the TDI model of a 2014 Volkswagen TDI is the Draw Tite hitch part # 24866. I attached an install video for this for you to check out as well.

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver For 2014 VW Jetta SEL
  • For your 2014 VW Jetta SEL, I recommend the Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class I - 1-1/4" # 24866 over the Curt # C11474. The Hidden Hitch brand is going away and the Curt hitch receiver requires the use of a stabilization strap # 18050 for any non-trailer load like a bike rack. Each of the options has the same basic measurements for ground clearance and bumper clearance. I've attached a video that shows each of them has a 6 inch from center of hitch...

  • Correct Trailer Hitch for a 2013 Volkswagen Jetta TDI
  • The only trailer hitch we have listed as a confirmed fit for a 2013 Volkswagen Jetta TDI is the Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 24866. I checked with Curt and they do not list the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # C11474 as a fit so I cannot recommend this. I actually recommend you go with the Draw-Tite option anyway even if the Curt hitch was a confirmed fit because it would require you to use the Curt Cam Buckle Stabilizing Strap part # 18050 for all non-towing applications. • Recommended Trailer Hitch and Towing Components For 2015 VW Golf TDI Sportwagen
  • The Hidden Hitch 60283 has been discontinued. It has been replaced by the Draw-Tite # 24866. Neither hitch is a fit for your 2015 model as they are only a fit for 2009 to 2014 model years. For your 2015 VW TDI Golf Sportwagen, I recommend the Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class I - 1-1/4" # 24949. This hitch requires no drilling, but underbocy panel and fascia must be temporarily removed for installation. I recommend this hitch over the Curt C11422...

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for 2012 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen
  • While we had one customer come back and tell us the Curt # C11072 fit well on their 2010 Jetta TDI Curt does not recommend it for the TDI models so instead I'd recommend the Draw Tite part # 24866 which has been confirmed as a fit for the TDI models. It also has the advantage of not needing a stabilizer strap if you ever wanted to carry a non-supported load like a bike rack or cargo carrier. I attached a picture of what this hitch looks like installed on a TDI model as well as an install...

  • Trailer Hitch Compatible with 2006 VW Jetta 1.9L
  • The 2004 VW Jetta will use the Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver # 24748 which is not compatible with a 2006 Jetta. It was designed for the previous generation. You instead will need the hitch # 24866 which is specifically designed to fit 2006-2014 Jetta models. I've attached a couple of videos to assist.

  • Trailer Hitch for 2010 VW Jetta SportWagen TDI
  • The only hitch that fits a 2010 VW Jetta SportWagen TDI is the Draw-Tite # 24866, which is a Class I hitch with a 1-1/4" receiver; the Curt # C11474 you referenced does NOT fit TDI models. In regards to your question about the VW Golf Wagon, that is simply how it is marketed in Canada and it is the same as the U.S. version called the Jetta SportWagen so the hitch is going to fit both vehicles, regardless of name.

  • Towing Components and Towing Capacity for 2013 Volkswagon Jetta SE 2.5L
  • The one true authority on any vehicle's capabilities is the auto maker itself. Your printed owner's manual is the best source for accurate information about towing capacity, since online information may be generalized. Online data I found indicates the car has a 2000-lb towing capacity. Since your manual relates to your specific vehicle it is the place to find if the car is indeed rated for any towing capacity. You could also ask your local dealership to look up the car's VIN, since...

  • Trailer Hitch and Wiring Recommendation for 2013 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen
  • For a trailer hitch confirmed as a fit for your 2013 Volkswagen Sportwagen TDI we have the Draw Tite kit part # 24866 which would fit and work well. Then for wiring you'd need the # 119179KIT which is a universal kit confirmed as a fit. I attached an install video for this on a very similar 2014 Jetta SportWagen for you to check out as well. For a ball mount you'd then want the # 3593 and for hitch balls we have # 19256 for a 1-7/8 inch ball.

  • Does Draw Tite Trailer Hitch # 24866 Fit Diesel 2010 Volkswagen Jetta Sedan TDI

Sometimes they change the URL slightly so the link goes down but they should be up again soon. The install video that shows the hitch installed on...

  • Compatibility of Draw-Tite Class I Hitch Receiver with Bike Carrier for Carbon Fiber Frame Bike
  • The Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class I - 1-1/4" # 24866 is 3-3/4 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost part of the bumper which is the most important measurement to ensure a bike rack fits to give you adequate clearance so your rack and vehicle don't make contact. • Will Euro-Style Ball Mount fit Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch on 2006 VW Jetta
  • The undercarriage on TDI and non-TDI models of your 2006 VW Jetta is different enough in a number of areas that disqualify the Curt # C11474 from being a fit, it is definitely not the muffler only. It is designed to angle at both ends of the crosstube, whereas the Draw-Tite # 24866 has a crosstube which is straight at one end, allowing for more flexibility during the install. The good news is that the Euro-Style Drawbar # C45561, which has a 1-7/8 inch hitch ball, or # C45562, which...
