Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2000 Honda CR-V - Draw-Tite

Today on this 2000 Honda CRV, we're going to install Part Number 24790 from Draw-Tite. This is what the hitch looks like when it's installed on our CRV. Next we'll give you some measurements to help you out in selecting some accessories such as a bicycle rack or a cargo carrier. From the center of our hitch pin hole to the outside edge of the spare tire is going to be about 9-1/2 inches. From our top of receiver opening down to the ground is going to be about 15-3/4 inches. Now we'll go ahead and show you how the hitch is installed. Our first thing to get our vehicle ready for our hitch, we need to lower our exhaust out of the way.

To do that we're going to spray the rubber hangers down up here with some spray lubricant. Then push pull the inaudible 00:00:46 off. There's 1 on this side, and there's 1 on the other side of the muffler as well up in here. Once we have it loosened we'll gently lower it down and out of the way. Now let me go ahead and show you where the hitch mounts up to the vehicle.

It's going to use this existing hole right here, this tie down point, and this hole here. Now we'll have to install some hardware inside the frame as well, so we're going to have to make our hole just a little bit bigger to accommodate our hardware. What we're going to do is drill a 1/4 inch hole right next to it but as close as possible without going over to make our hole be a little bit bigger. Then we'll go ahead and take our drill and just grind it out that way. We're done with the driver's side. Let's go ahead and repeat the same process on the passenger side. Before we install our hardware we'll go ahead and show you how it works with the hitch before hand.

This is our bolt we want to put in, and our 3 inch long block. This will be inside the frame. Go through the hitch. In the bottom side we get a conical tooth washer. Make sure the teeth face towards the hitch.

Then we'll put a nut on the bottom. This will be the same on both sides of the hitch. In the center it's going to be just a little bit different. The center loops going to use the longest of the 3 bolts. There will be only 1. This will be on the outside of the tie down hook right through here. The backside will get a block to go through here, and this will get another conical tooth washer and a nut. The tie down loop will be right here. Now to help us get our hardware installed we'll be using this bolt leader that comes with the kit. First we'll go ahead and put the block and the bolt together. Then thread on the bolt leader. Then we'll install both pieces to the frame 1 at a time, then pull it back down through the same hole. This is what's known as reverse pull. Now we'll take off our bolt leader. This is option. May be a good idea to leave it on there to help keep it from being pulled into the frame when you put the hitch up as well. It may help to use a block a little bit to help spread it apart a little bit if you need more. Now we can go ahead and put up our hitch. We'll take the passenger side and just gently lay it over the muffler and then go back to your drivers side and install the hardware. Let's go back over to our passenger side. We'll do our last attachment point here. Block inaudible 00:04:25 in between. Long bolt in our small block with the square hole. Go through the hitch. We get the conical tooth washer and a nut. With all our hardware loosely installed we'll go ahead and tighten it down and then torque the bolts down as specified in the instructions. We'll be using a 3/4 inch socket to tighten down our bolts. At this point we can go ahead and reattach our rubber muffler hangers to the vehicle. We'll use some lubricant and put them into place. That's all it takes to install our hitch. That will finish it for part number 24790 from Draw-Tite on our 2000 Honda CRV. .

After watching an internet video showing how to install the trailer hitch and wiring harness, the whole process was very easy. I did change things a little in that I used dish detergent (instead of whatever spray the video used) to lubricate the rubber bushings which hold up the exhaust system. They slid off fairly easily. In my 2000 CR-V there is a covered storage pocket on the floor right beneath the speaker where the wiring harness plugs in (see photograph). There is a plastic fastener which attaches the cloth pocket to the plastic sidewall. I removed the fastener and lifted up the pocket. After plugging the trailer wire into the connector at the speaker, I fed the trailer end of the wire harness in back of the plastic sidewall and down and out into the pocket. I put the cloth liner back and this pocket serves as a great place to store the wire harness when not in use. This alternate procedure removed the necessity of unfastening the plastic sidewall and the transom on the tail of the car -- two things which did not want to come loose anyway. So, with a few modifications everything worked great and the trailer now rides behind my CR-V! 255899

I liked the way it was packaged and all necessary items were furnished. The delivery was fast! It was a little difficult to install due to the way you have to install the carriage nuts up in the frame. They won't fit without grinding a little material away from the existing holes in the car frame. However, the wire heli coil to snake the carriage bolt through the rectangle nuts provided was a pretty slick idea. You also have to drop the exhaust from the hangers. It took me a little over an hour to install it but overall. I am pleased with it. Very affordable for what you get, I am pleased with the way it looks on my CRV! I do wish the 1999 CRV had existing tapped holes for easier install but it doesn't. I am an Engineer but I don't think it is that difficult to install , if you have general mechanical aptitude you shouldn't have any trouble installing. You might get a buddy to help hold one side up while starting the nut on the other side but I did ok by myself. 427733

Honda CR-V

Not hard to put on looks great. Getting hole over the muffler took some time. Tried drilling like the video, no good. The tried cutoff wheel, still no room. Got small air saw and it was a snap, made two slits and bent it out of the way and bam. Would have been under an our had I used the air saw from the start. Great price and good quality hitch. You don't need a class III on a CR-V as you can't tow anything that big anyway, just unnecessary extra weight. This hitch is perfect. 313491

very easy to install. the only issue is the hole on the frame is just a little too small. I used a die grinder to slightly enlarge hole and it went together fine. muffler must be taken down, but this is only 2 bolts and nuts. total install time 35min. shipping was super fast and best price on the web! 210682

I found the product online and it was in stock. I printed a picture of it and showed my mechanics to see if I chose the right thing and if they would install it. They said ''YES" - and it arrived last evening. I made an appt. with the mechanic to have it installed this coming Monday. This is all to make my car adaptible to pull a trailer, just in case of emergency, and I gotta throw the essentials in the trailer and vacate pronto! I found what i needed easily from the internet search to your site. the product description was thorough, the photo rotator slide show excellent, ordering was simple, no problemmo... the package arrived quickly and just one thing, and this really doesn't matter, but it might... it did poke through the box! But heck, its metal, so what! 430154

1997 Honda CR-V

Hitch was just as advertised. There wasn't a video specifically for my 1997 Honda CRV, but watching one for another brand installed on a 2000 gave me enough of an idea to figure it out. Lowering the exhaust and filing open the holes was easier than I thought. I had my son help me hold the hitch while I secured the bolts. It was really pretty easy. I recommend watching a video for the electronics too, but I didn't need to take off as much trim as they recommend. Really simple and secure all the way around. 45 minutes, not including watching the Youtube videos, which again, are well worth your time. 47839

Product arrived incredibly fast and was in perfect shape. Install time is accurate, though can be faster if you drop the muffler out of the way and use a good half-round file. Do a pre-mount line up for the hitch before fishing the bolt into the frame, the directions show two different holes for the mounting location, but only one is correct. You will enlarge the hole you will be mounting the hitch to. After that minor snafu, the hitch went on with no problems at all and looks great under the car. Great product, great value, great service, great experience. Can't beat that. 18811

The hitch drawbar was exactly as advertised and fit the vehicle perfectly. I think the manufacturer is a little overly optimistic about the 30 minutes installation time - however, if have access to some simple hand tools and aren't uncomfortable with working while lying on your back, it is doable in an hour (+/-). (NOTE: the sheet metal which forms the unibody frame member is easier to deform than might be imagined, I used a 12 inch length of 1/2 inch pipe to deform the holes to the necessary dimension to admit the bolt head and reinforcing plate and it was no problem at all.) 37937

1998 honda CRV

The 24790 trailer hitch for my 1998 CR-V is the best improvement I've made. It fit perfectly. You have to attach the center bolt first and then draw up the two sides bolts. The light hitch & receiver remind you that the CR-V is not made for heavy loads. I use a Hitch-Haul with it, loading a maximum of 200 lbs. The Hitch-Haul is stable on 6" rock, gravel, and improved roads in the mountains at 4-7,000 feet, perfect for an elk hunt. Thanks, etrailer, for a great product at a great price. Fred Z 450131

as advertised Good product for the money, install was a little tricky. Put the car on ramps, detach the muffler from the rubber connectors and use a jack to support it so you don't have to disconnect it. I used a large box wrench to bend the hole in the car frame so the metal hardware they give you would fit after that it's pretty straight forward with the directions. It would take me 10 min to install if I had to do it again... 1544

Very good value. Product was as advertised. Arrived quickly. Parts from different manufacturers didn't quite fit together because of plastic coating but eTrailer customer service correctly identified the problem and after a few minuted filing i was a happy camper. The fitment problem was a matter of thousanths of an inch, but with sticky vinyl to vinyl, it was enough to initially prevent the hitch entering the receiver. 161494

2000 Honda CR-V

Buy this. I know next to nothing about fixing cars and I put this in. I was lazy and didn't lower my muffler, and it still only took an hour. Use a rounded file and a set of plumbers pliers to make the hole large enough to slip the bracket and bolt in. Line it up a head of time because the directions are a bit confusing. Did this on a 2000 crv. Use it mostly for a bike rack. 24383

The hitch and wiring harness were both just fine. I had an auto technician install, but I think it was fairly simple. Not sure how it happened, but the wiring harness wasn't shipped with the hitch as originally ordered. Once I figured that out, etrailer sent me the harness ASAP - no questions asked. I appreciated the fast, cordial service. 159171

1998 Honda CR-V

The hitch fit fairly easy onto my '98 CRV. Had to hammer the spare wheel well in a little bit to create enought clearance to mount it to the tow hook. The wiring harness is "plug-and-play" with the existing connector, located behind the speaker. I like the fact that e-trailer has the installation instruction video posted the products. 174906

1999 Honda CR-V

The trailer hitch I ordered fit my 1999 Honda CRV with very minor modifications which were described in the instructions. The installation was extremely easy and was completed in less than 30 minutes. The quality and functionality of the hitch is excellent, it will be used to trailer kayaks. I am very satisfied with this product. 50265

Hitch install only took 20 minutes. I Have installed 3 similar hitches (2 Honda CR-V ,1 Honda Civic) . Draw-tite hitches are usually easy to install, with no holes to drill . All hitches were purchased from Etrailer for their competitive prices and customer service and fast shipping.. Thanks again! 294130

Great Price / Easy Install Took only 30 minutes to install, most of that time was enlarging the holes in the frame. I used a dye gringer rather than a file. Once I enlarged the holes it took less than 10 minutes to actually install the hitch. 1317

Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for a 2000 Honda CR-V
  • When installing any trailer hitch you would have to use all attachment points specified in the instructions. You will want to consult the vehicle owners manual regarding the towing capacity. From our experiences, the 2000 Honda CR-V is capable of, at most, 1,500 pounds, regardless of what the hitch is rated for. Going with a lower capacity hitch like # 24790...
