I have been towing a master tow dolly behind our motorhome toy hauler for a year. The hitch is much higher on the toy hauler so I needed a large drop to get the tow dolly at the correct angle. We have been as far south as West Palm Beach Florida and north to Mackinaw City Michigan and several trips in between with no problems. Works great. 699764

This is a ball hitch mount that is not a standard unit, problem I had I purchased a new p/u going from a 2500 series which stood higher to a 1500 series standing lower by 4" also lowering 3 1/2" towing a 4800 pound boat as we all know, needing to tow level, that wasn't going to happen, this ball mount did the trick, fits D.O.T. standards also more than what i needed for weight requirements 83187

The product itself is very nice. It seems well made and should work nicely for what I need. The best part, though, was the customer service. An initial order had to be canceled due to a backorder and Amy H was instrumental in making sure that we were taken care of. Will do more business in the future. 905937

Just as advertised. Delivered fast. I am using as a rise as the hitch on my SUV is very low. This was actually a touch too much of a rise as now I struggle to get the tongue off the ball with the trailer jack. So, I recommend you measure the max height you can get the tongue with your trailer jack and then see if this will be too much if you are using as a rise. 897696

Great hitch! We put it on our minivan, which has the receiver mounted on the frame below the bumper, so pretty low. Previously, our camper would really push the rear end down. This leveled it out much better, and created a much better ride. 857621

Ask the Experts about this Convert-A-Ball Trailer Hitch Ball Mount

  • Recommendation to Help Back and Forth Movement in Trailer Hitch While Towing
To help alleviate the back and forth chucking you are experiencing with your 2 inch receiver there are a couple of things I recommend doing. First is to use a cushioned ball mount, the Convert-A-Ball, which is designed to reduce this type of movement and additional road shock with its polyurethane cushioning interior; if you take a look at the accompanying diagram it displays the cushioned inside of the ball mount. I will list the different rise and drop available for this ball mount below....

  • How is Drop Measured and Determined on a Ball Mount
The drop in a ball mount is measured from the top of the shank that inserts into the receiver tube to the top of the ball platform. See the video I've lined of ball mount # AMSC12. Around the 1:15 mark the drop measurement is demonstrated. To determine how much drop (Or rise) you need you'll want to have your tow vehicle and trailer on level ground and measure from the ground to the inside top of the receiver tube and from the ground to the bottom of the trailer coupler. Then find...

  • How to Determine the Amount of Drop Needed When Purchasing a Ball Mount
To determine the amount of drop you need in a ball mount you need to have your trailer and tow vehicle on level ground and measure from the ground to the bottom of your coupler, and from the ground to the inside of the top of your hitch receiver. I've attached a couple of pictures to help show this. Since you measured from the bottom of each you're likely going to need more than 10 inches drop. You'll likely need around 12 inches or so like the Convert-A-Ball, part # AMSC12. If you...

  • Solutions for Towing Trailer With Very Low Ground Clearance Under Trailer Ball
Wow, your truck must have quite a lift and the trailer coupler height must be super-low! 4 inches of ground clearance under the hitch ball isn't sufficient. There are things you can do with the suspension on the trailer to raise its height. If the leaf springs are currently mounted to the underside of the axle, you can use an over/under conversion kits like # K71-384-00 for a 2-3/8 inch or # K71-385-00 for a 3 inch diameter axle beam, but you're only going to gain the diameter of the...

  • How to Pick Out the Correct Rise/Drop Ball Mount to Tow Trailer Level
I attached an FAQ for you to check out that details all of this, but what you need to do is get your truck and your trailer on level ground and take a couple measurements. You will need to measure from the ground to the bottom of the coupler on the trailer when it is sitting level, and then measure from the ground to the top of the hitch opening. Whatever the difference is the amount of rise/drop you need.

  • Ball Mount Recommendation for an RV Where 12 inches of Drop are Needed to Tow Boat Trailer
The Cushioned Ball Mount # AMSC12 that you referenced would be perfect for you all things considered. It has the drop you need (12 inches), the length you need (12-1/2 inches from pin hole to ball hole). This should not reduce the hitch capacity of your RV at all. Since your boat and trailer weigh considerably less than the capacity of the hitch you would not have to worry about that. If the weight of your boat and trailer were right at your hitch capacity it would be one thing, but...

  • Availability of Ball Mount with More Drop Than 12-1/2
If you are wanting a ball mount with a further drop than the 12" Drop Convert-A-Ball Ball Mount # AMSC12 you will need a Gen-Y Hitch like part # 325-GH-317 which has a 15" drop. Aside from that we don't have a "traditional" ball mount with as much length or drop as the Convert-A-Ball option that you referenced. Gen-Y does recommend using a stabilizer bar kit like part # 325-GH-0100 to help keep their hitch from wobbling. I also recommend installing a hitch lock like part # 34061072-D...

The Convert-A-Ball # AMSC12 cushioned ball mount can indeed be used in the rise position, which would provide 10-3/4 inches of rise. Keep in mind this is an extreme rise. Usually, needing a rise that large would be a good indication that you really shouldn't tow that trailer with your vehicle, but because the Yakima Rack and Roll Trailers are so light, you won't have a problem. You'll also need a 2 inch diameter ball like part # 63845.

  • Recommended Ball Mount with 9-1/2 inch Rise
Between the two ball mount options referenced in your question, I recommend going with the Convert-A-Ball # AMSC12 that has the larger 10-3/4 inch rise. This is because when loading your tow vehicle up for a trip with your trailer, there is bound to be some rear sag that will lower the ball mount even further. Sounds like you are asking how much movement the built in cushion of the Convert a Ball # AMSC12 allows when installed. It really doesn't move much at all. There would be a little bit of movement but for the most part it would not be sliding in and out of the hitch opening at all. The reason for this is that the tongue weight of the trailer pressed hard enough vertically on the ball mount that it pins the ball mount in the hitch.
