Many tow systems require some sort of hitch accessory to either raise or lower your tow bar so that it sits level. To determine if your setup needs an adapter, hook the tow bar up to your RV and towed car and measure to see how close to level it is. The "safe zone" for a motor-home-mounted tow bar ranges from 3 inches above level to 3 inches below. Car-mounted models must be absolutely level. This high-low adapter can provide you with the necessary drop or desired rise to achieve a level tow bar setup.

Video Transcript for Blue Ox Tow Bars BX88132 Review

Today we're going to be reviewing part number BX88132. This is the Blue Ox High-Low Adapter for Tow Bar Systems. It's going to allow for proper positioning of your tow bar. It makes up for the high difference between a RV's hitch and the tow vehicle's base plates. This can be used in either the drop or rise position. It's constructed of a nice sturdy steel construction. You can see here on the back side of the shank, we got a nice solid piece.

We also have a nice solid piece here on the back of the receiver tube, so the back of the receiver tube is not opened. It's constructed of a sturdy steel. It's also going resist rust and corrosion with the durable powder coat finish. A 5/8" pin and clip is going to be included that way you can secure the shank portion inside of your 2" x 2" trailer hitch receiver. It is designed for a 2" x 2" hitch. It's going to offer a drop or rise of 10"; that measurement is taken from the center of the shank straight up or straight down to the center of the receiver tube. The receiver size or the receiver opening is going to be 2" x 2".

It's going to offer a maximum weight capacity of 5,000 pounds. If we take a measurement from the center of 1 pin hole to the center of the other pin hole, that's going to give us a measurement of 11-1/2". The pin hole diameters are going to measure 5/8". The distance that we have from the center of the hitch pin hole to the back of the upright portion here measuring to the base of that weld is going to give us a measurement of 7-3/4". The distance that we have from the center of the hitch pin hole to the back of the shank is going to measure 3".

The receiver tube length is going to give us a measurement of 6-3/8" and then the overall length is going to give us a measurement of right around 17". Keep in mind that this system is designed for flat towing only, so you do not want to use this to tow a trailer. This portion here is our shank; it's going to be the portion that slides in to our 2" x 2" trailer hitch receiver. You're going to push it in until your pin holes are lined up with one another and then you can simply insert your 5/8" pin and clip. It's also going to be used with a pin and lock, so you got to do is secure that so this portion is going to be secured inside your hitch. Once you have it set in either the drop or the rise position, your tow bar systems is going to go in this portion here.

You're going to secure that with a 5/8" pin and clip or hitch pin and lock and then connect to your tow vehicle and you should be all set to go. That's going to do it for our review of part number BX88132. This is the Blue Ox High-Low Adapter for Tow Bars providing a drop or rise of 10". .

Not much exciting I can say about a big, heavy piece of steel, but this is another example of typical Blue Ox quality. Very well built with clean welds and good finish work. etrailer came through again too with prompt delivery and excellent communications. 355138

The Blue Ox 10" rise/drop trailer hitch I order from etrailer.com appears to be of the highest quality. I had hoped to find a dual-receiver hitch with a 10" rise/drop, but it appeared that the maximum available rise/drop in a dual-receiver hitch is about 4". 129914

Ask the Experts about this Blue Ox Accessories and Parts
Do you have a question about this Accessories and Part?

  • Can a Front-Mount Hitch and Adapter be Used to Push a Trailer Into Tight Spots?
  • You certainly aren't alone having a bit of trouble backing up a long trailer. Using a front-mounted hitch like your # 65078 is fine, but the Blue Ox adapter, # BX88132, is designed for flat-towing so it isn't going to work for you. What you can do instead is attach a fixed ball mount, and the Draw-Tite # 80248 is going to give you 9-3/4" of rise. Please keep in mind that the Draw-Tite has has a max gross towing weight (GTW) of 3,500 lbs and max tongue weight (TW) of 350 lbs in the rise...

  • High Low Adapter to Flat Tow Jeep Wrangler That Sits 10 inches Higher than RV Hitch
  • Yes you do need a high-low adapter to level out your tow bar so that you can safely tow your Jeep. Since you have a 10 inch height difference the adapter you'd want is the part # BX88132. I also attached a help article on these adapters as well.

  • Parts Needed to Flat Tow 2008 Mini Cooper Convertible
  • Step 1 when considering flat towing any vehicle is confirming in the owner's manual that it can be flat towed and any steps required to make it ready for this procedure. The Mini with manual transmission is the preferred version for towing but the automatic transmission models can be towed so long as they have the Steptronic feature. I suggest checking your owner's manual; the information I found was contained in an online edition on pages 147-148. Flat towing requires a few components...

  • What is Tongue Weight Capacity on Blue Ox High-Low Adapter # BX88132
  • I spoke with my contact at Blue Ox regarding the High-Low Adapter for Tow Bars # BX88132 referenced in your question. He stated that this high-low adapter has a tongue weight capacity of 500 pounds and a towing weight maximum of 5,000 pounds. This adapter will provide you with either a 10 inch rise or a 10 inch drop and can be used when flat towing a vehicle in order to make the tow bar level. Please note that this adapter should not be used to tow a trailer. I have attached a short...

  • Highest Amount of Rise for a High/Low Hitch Adapter for Use with Tow Bar
  • When using a tow bar to pull your modified 2016 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited you will need a high/low adapter to reduce the height difference between it and the RV. The greatest amount of rise available comes from the two items shown on the linked page, Roadmaster # RM-048-10 and Blue Ox # BX88132. There is no adapter with 15-inches of rise. Generally tow bar makers recommend no more than 3-inches above or below level for either end of the tow bar, so you may need to re-position your D-rings...

  • Dual Receiver Adapter for Use with Blue Ox Alpha Tow Bar BX7365 and Hitch Bike Rack
  • Any tow bar, such as the excellent Blue Ox Alpha # BX7365, used to flat tow a vehicle like your (very cool!) 1995 Wrangler should be level or nearly so in order to operate best. Tow bars can be up to 3-inches higher or lower than dead-level on either end, strictly speaking, but they all will work better (less binding of the telescoping arms) when they are level. We offer high-low hitch adapters like # RM-076 and # BX88132, shown on the linked page and reviewed in detail in the linked...

  • Is High-Low Adapter Available For Towing Jeep That Is 14 To 15 Inches Higher Than RV Hitch
  • You are correct that the adapter we offer for tow bars with the most rise is 10 inches. That is the Blue Ox High-Low Adapter, part # BX88132. When flat towing you need to keep the tow bar as level as you can with a tolerance of 3 inches. Since you said you have 14 to 15 inches of difference we do not have a high-low adapter that would keep you within the 3 inches. I have attached a helpful article that explains flat-towing you can check out.

  • High/Low Hitch Adapter for Tow Bar Use
  • A tow bar will ideally be dead-level when connected at both the RV and toad but it is permissible for either end of the bar to be up to 3-inches above or below level, but no more than that. In your case a high/low hitch adapter with 8-inches of drop will get you in the ballpark but one with 10-inches of drop will be better, such as Blue Ox # BX88132. We do not offer any high/low hitch adpaters with your required drop that also have a second receiver to allow use of a hitch-mounted accessory...

  • The bracket height for the Blue Ox base plate kit part # BX2258 which is a fit for your 2014 Honda CR-V will be 15-1/2 inches when installed. That means you would need the high low adapter part # BX88132 since you are a difference of 12-1/2 inches and 2-1/2 inches is within the safe range.

  • High-Low Hitch Adapter Compatibility with Winch on 1999 Tahoe with Front Hitch Receiver
  • The Blue Ox High-Low Adapter for Tow Bars - 2" Hitches - 10" Rise/Drop - 11-1/2" Long # BX88132 is designed for use with a tow bar. Using a winch would put additional torque on the adapter and the receiver that it isn't rated for or warrantied for. It would work fine for a 5,000 lb line pull that was fairly straight from the receiver. Beyond that it would work, but you would want to consider the torque on your hitch. It may be a better option to simply use a plate like the Curt Trailer...

  • Can Two High-Low Adapter be Used to Achieve Needed Rise or Drop
  • To achieve a 10 inch drop to keep your tow bar within the "Safe Zone" (3 inches above or below level) I definitely recommend going with a single high-low adapter that features the full 10 inch drop. The potential issue with using 2 adapters like you mentioned is that it's going to cause an awful lot of movement at the connection point which may lead to failure down the line. With a flat towing setup using 2 adapters like this isn't as much of a concern compared to with a hitch mounted...
