Time-Delayed Braking

What is time-delayed braking

The Pro Series Pilot comes equipped with time-delayed braking. Every time you apply the brakes in your vehicle, a signal is sent - via the brake switch - to the Pilot. The controller then sends power out to your trailer brakes to activate them with an intensity set by you, at a rate determined by you. The amount of braking power (output) can be adjusted to suit your preference, the road conditions, the type of trailer, and the weight of your load. To determine which levels are best for your application, test your towing setup and choose what feels right.

Built-In Controls for Adjustable Power

Pro Series Pilot Controls and Components

Braking output is the maximum amount of power that will be applied to your trailer's brakes. How much braking output you need is determined by the weight of your trailer; a heavier trailer will need more power to bring it to a stop. You want to set the braking output as high as you can without locking up the brakes. Once you've set up the brake controller the first time, you shouldn't need to adjust the settings until the trailer load changes, you switch trailers, or road conditions change. Use the thumbwheel on the side to change the braking output level. The output setting will appear as a number on the digital display, with a higher number indicating higher braking power.

Manual Override

The Pro Series Pilot keeps the manual override within easy reach on the front of the module, great for stopping sway or controlling your trailer's momentum in emergencies. Push the slide-bar to activate the trailer's brakes and brake lights without you having to apply the brakes on your tow vehicle, perfect for limiting trailer movement while you're cruising.

Quick, Simple Installation

Because inertia plays no role in the functioning of this controller, you do not have to mount the unit at any particular angle. Your mounting options are limitless, so long as you can still easily access the controller and manual override. The Pilot is especially flexible; its microprocessor allows the controller to even be mounted upside down, and it will still give you a readable display. The Pilot can go wherever you need it. Plus, the included wiring adapter eases installation overall. The custom connector end plugs into the port on your vehicle and the other end plugs into the controller.

Installation Accessories

You can use etrailer's exclusive 7- and 4-way brake control installation kit (ETBC7 - sold separately) if you don't already have a 7-way plug at the back of your vehicle.

Video Transcript for Pro Series Pilot Trailer Brake Controller: The Breakdown

Today, we're going to be taking a look at part number 80550. This is the Pilot 2-6 Brake Time Delayed Electronic Brake Controller from Pro Series. It's going to work for 2-6 brakes, which is going to be up to 3 brake axles. One of the main features I want to show you is the large, easy to read dual-digital disk play. I have it connected to our power source. That way, you can just get a really quick look at how easy that display is to see.

Nice, quick response time too. Please keep in mind that this installer must be installed with a 12 volt negative ground system. It's going to provide flexible mounting options and can be installed in any direction. It's got a microprocessor that's going to allow the controller to be mounted upside down and still have a readable display. It's got a feature protection against short circuit or loss of ground. A standard mounting bracket is included as well as the hardware needed to get it attached.

That's going to go on the side here towards the back of the controller. It's got the mounting slots in there and then you can see the different options that you have as far as a versatile mount. This inaudible 00:01:12 right here is going to be the ball mount interface. It's an optional mounting ball pivot kit that we sell that works with this. It's sold separately. You can find that with part number 5298.

A pulse preventer is also recommended. That's available and sold separately with part number 5501. The wheel on this side of the controller is designed to control and adjust the breaking power. This right here is going to be the manual override or the manual slide knob. The wiring system is a simple plug and play feature that allows for easy and quick connection and disconnection. This is designed for use with electric brakes.

It's going to give us an overall width of 3 1/2 inches, overall length of 4 3/4 of an inch, and then an overall height of about 1 9/16ths of an inch. It's going to be covered with a limited lifetime warranty. If a custom break wiring adapter is not available for your vehicle, one of the following will be required: Either a 20 amp circuit breaker for 2-4 brake applications or a 30 amp circuit breaker for 6-8 brake applications. When it comes to the wiring on this system, your white wire is going to be your ground. Your black is going to be for the positive battery. Your red is going to be for the cold side of the stop light switch, and then your blue wire is going to be for the brake output to the trailer. That's going to do it for our review of part number 80550. This is the Pilot 2-6 Brake Time Delayed Electronic Brake Controller from Pro Series. .

So far so good

Easy install. Competetive price

by:

fast shipping good price perfect fit

by:

good value but the swivel mount being optional should be made more clear

by:

I ordered a brake controler and was delivered in three day and it works great. Will order other parts in the future

by:

Very impressed with quality. Fit exactly as needed and now the controller is working as designed. Should of purchased this the controller originally!! I think it should be the only way the controller is sold.

by:

Perfect ! I think I spent longer typing this review, than I did installing this connector. Our GMC Acadia was easy. The factory connector was just to the left of the emergency brake pedal.

by:

I ordered the Prodigy P2 and wiring harness for my 2012 and the equipment arrived in spectacular time. I plan to use the brake controller in conjunction with towing a Kodiak travel trailer. I have yet to use the system but it was installed easily useing the accompaning directions

by:

Our new Tekonsha brake controller was super easy to install. We are new RVer's and are will use it today for the first time when we pick up our travel trailer from the dealer.
Looking forward to many safe miles because of that device.
We are telling everyone we meet about the great prices and service at etrailer.com
Thanks,

On Monday I ordered a Teknosha Prodigy P3 Proportional brake controller and interface cable from trailer.com. I received these items via UPS ON Wednesday ( I chose to pay for two day shipping because I'm picing up a new travel trailer on Saturday).
Today (Thursday) I installed the controller in my 2014 GMC Acadia. It was fully installed in les than 20 minutes. I will functionally check it this weekend. Etrailer.com responded quickly to my order and I received the items on time.

by:

The Tekonsha Primus IQ was very easy to install with the GM wiring harness. I had everything installed in about 45 min. and it works great on my 2015 Chevy Traverse. etrailer.com had my order at my door within 3 days and offered free shipping. Can’t ask for much more than that.

by:

Great deal

by:

easy to use brake box

by:

The wiring harness plugged into the 2015 GMC Acadia connector for my 7 wire electric brake controller. I had to drill a hole in an access panel under the steering column so that the harness could attached to the brake controller. Everything worked as anticipated. I did have to purchase a special upholstery tool kit from NAPA (plastic tools) to remove the connectors on the access panel. I would recommend this harness and the corresponding electric brake controller for any GMC vehicle that can pull a trailer that has electric brakes.

by:

Great product

by:

I am a retired auto mechanic so I truly know and appreciate when something is actually plug and play. Our 2017 Chevrolet Traverse had the factory V92 trailer towing package listed on the build sheet so the plug for the trailer brake was where it was supposed to be. The controller is easy to adjust and has an LED display to let you know if it senses a connection. Additionally, there are three levels of brake application based on trailer weight. We tow three different trailers so this feature is appreciated. Completely works as advertised and all for a good price.

by:

Just what I needed to hook my new brake controller up and get ready for our camper. Couldn't be easier. Plug in to the Traverse's wiring harness, and plug the other end in to the brake controller. Perfect match!

by:

Very easy to install. Haven't got a trailer to set yet, but from other reviews, looks like it will be easy.

by:

The plug matched the truck's wiring harness and works good. The instructions were very clear and easy to use.

by:

This cable made it super easy to install the brake controller into my 2011 GMC Acadia Denali and didn't have to mess with splicing wires.

by:

Great product and service. etrailer website and its videos were excellent in helping chose the right product set up and instillation. The Tekonsha Plug-in Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controller was just the ticket for my Chevy Traverse. Easy instillation and Works as advertised. Very happy and would buy from both Tekonsha and etrailer again without reservation.

by:

I ordered item 3026-P to connect a 2013 Chevy Traverse with a Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Brake Controller. My Traverse has the factory installed Tow Package (V92), so the harness plug is already populated and ready to plug into the 3026-P.
The pre-wired harness fit perfectly to my 2013 Traverse. After hunting for the factory plug hidden under the dash, the harness installed easily and locked into place. There is plenty of slack to route where desired on either side of the steering column. I chose the left side for a more flush bracket install against the plastic under-dash cover. The harness installed perfectly into the Prodigy P2. The unit instantly powered up and appeared nominal in operation.
I look forward to using the combination of these 2 items to safely haul around a travel trailer in the near future, which is why I preinstalled these.
One thing to keep in mind is that there is live voltage on the black wire when the harness is mated to the vehicle plug, so if you install the harness but remove the Brake Controller (when not used or used between 2 vehicles), be sure to cover the open harness end with a rubber cap or electrical tape, to keep from shorting it to any ground point.
Great product, excellent pricing, and easy to find for my specific configuration!

by:

worked exactly as documented

by:

I ordered the Tekonsha P-3 brake controller from etrailer because they would ship it with the correct cable assembly for my Chevy Traverse at a very good price. It came with good directions and installed easily and quickly. I've taken my trailer out one time now and the Tekonsha brake controller performed flawlessly. While this is a small sample size so far, I would highly rate etrailer and the Tekonsha brake controller.

by:

Needed this to plug into the factory wiring on my 2015 Chevy Traverse LTZ. It is not equipped with a dash port for direct plug in, but Chevy does leave wiring with a factory plug end under the floor liner. Once I found that, this mated, and made hook up of the brake controller easy. No splicing or cutting necessary to install my brake control module.

Hello Patrick, Between the 2 brake controllers that you mentioned I would go with the the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 # 90885. The main reason is because the Pro Series Pilot # 80550 is time delayed, so there will be a delay from the time that you hit your brakes in your GMC for the brakes to be applied on the trailer. Honestly, I am surprised that they still make the time delayed brake controllers. The Tekonsha P2 # 90885 is a proportional brake control, meaning that it works at the same time...

The '.C' means that there is a trailer connected and isn't an indicator of a problem. Are you by chance using an adapter in the 7-way connector to change it to a 6-way? I've attached a video of the 12V power wire connection, but it does not include the brake controller power connection that will be nearly...

  • Recommended Brake Controller and Wiring Adapter for a 2015 Chevy Traverse w/ the Factory Tow Package
Hello Carl! Your 2015 Chevy Traverse does indeed come with a port to plug in a brake controller so long as you have the factory tow package. You mentioned it being tow ready so I wanted to clarify that as long as your Traverse came from the factory with a 7-way harness you'll have the necessary port. I have attached a picture below that will show you exactly where to find the port. As far as using the Tekonsha Primus IQ Trailer Brake Controller item # TK90160, I currently have this one...

  • Availability of Diagram for Brake Switch for Chevy Traverse
We don't have access to a diagram but have you checked the wiring for 12 volts with brake applied with a circuit tester like part # PTW2993? That's the only reliable way we have to find it.

  • Brake Controller Plug-In Connector Location on a 2017 GMC Acadia Denali with OEM 7-Way
Did you remove the panel under your driver's side dash? The plug for the adapter # 3026-P should be located there, taped to another harness to the left of the steering column (see attached photo). This exists if your 2017 GMC Acadia Denali has a factory 7-Way connector at the rear. The plug-in adapter that I referenced will allow you to install a brake controller like the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195 without hardwiring anything. If you do not have a factory 7-Way then you need a 4-Way...

  • Recommended 7-Way Trailer Connector On A 2016 Chevrolet Traverse Without Factory Tow Package
If you are looking to match a factory type set-up on your 2016 Chevrolet Traverse, then the round factory plug you are referring to is a 7-way trailer socket. Because you don't have the factory tow package, we need to take a couple steps to get us there. The first step is to see if the factory wiring for a tow package is present. Look behind the bumper on the passenger side for a connector. If there is a connector, we will just need # 18138. This will allow us to simply connect the...

  • Brake Controller Wiring Harness for a 2006 Chevy Silverado 2500HD
For a 2006 Chevy Silverado 2500HD you will need brake controller wiring harness # 3015-P for a Tekonsha, Reese, or Draw-Tite brake controller. Chevy trucks also some times need additional connections under the hood to make everything fully functional. I have included a link to a help article that explains this for you. I have also included a link to a video showing the harness being installed on a similar truck.

  • Brake Controller Installation 2020 Chevy Traverse
Your 2020 Chevy Traverse is prewired for a brake controller. Instead of a connector, there are 4 blunt cut tow package wires located under the dash below and behind where the headlight switch is located. These wires will directly connect with the wires of the pigtail included with your brake controller. The wire bundle should be taped to a larger wiring harness, and will usually have a white tag or label on it. The 4 wires will connect as follows: The blue tow package wire connects to...

  • How Does Brake Controller Install in 2014 Chevy Traverse with Factory 7-Way
Your 2014 Chevy Traverse that has the factory 7-way does not require accessing the brake controller wiring if your plan was to install the Curt Echo Mobile brake controller part # C74VV that you referenced. Basically you'd plug in the Echo directly into your 7-way and once you've synced it to your smart phone you'd be ready to tow. If you wanted to install a more traditional brake controller like the P3 part # 90195 you'd use the install harness part # 3026-P which plugs into a gray connector...

  • Does a Brake Controller Plug Into a 2007 Chevy Silverado New Body or Does it Hardwire In
The 2007 Chevy Silverado New Body does not use a harness to plug in a brake controller. That stopped in 2006 and 2007 Classic models. Instead your truck has a tow package wire bundle under the dash, to the left of the steering column, held together with white tape. You can keep the harness that you have and just cut off the end that would normally plug into the truck. Brake controller white goes to truck white for ground. Controller black goes to truck red for 12 volt power. Controller...

  • Trailer Brake Controller Installation in 2013 Chevy Suburban 1500 LTZ
Neither the 2013 Chevy Tahoe nor the 2013 Suburban have an under-dash connection port for installation of a trailer brake controller such as the Prodigy P3 # 90195. Both vehicles do however have the necessary wiring already run. The 2013 Traverse with a factory 7-way DOES have such a port under the dash and uses part # 3026-P for any Tekonsha controller. You can refer to the linked article for specific details about brake controller installation in your Suburban. This article includes...

  • Installing Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Brake Controller on 2008 Chevy Avalanche
The 2008 Avalanche doesn't have a connector under the dash. The Avalanche will have bare ended tow package wires under the dash between the steering column and the emergency brake pedal. Look for a wiring harness with a white tag hanging from it. There should be 4 or 5 wires in the harness, and they would connect to the pigtail included with the Prodigy P3 # 90195 brake controller as follows: Red/black striped tow package wire to black pigtail wire White tow package wire to white pigtail...

  • Trailer Brake Controller Installation on a 2015 GMC Acadia
The vehicle is indeed pre-wired, as you suspected. To get completely set up, you'll need a brake controller, the appropriate wiring harness to connect the controller to the vehicle and a trailer connector for the rear of the vehicle. All the rest of the wiring is ran, but you'll need some fuses and relays to activate the tow package wiring. For a brake controller, you can't go wrong with the Tekonsha P3, part # 90195. The P3 is one of the most user-friendly brake controllers available....

  • Brake Controller Install on 2007 Jeep Commander with Factory Tow Package
Although your 2007 Jeep Commander is equipped with the Mopar tow package, it isn't fully wired with a plug-and-play connector under the dash. Jeep ran the brake controller output wire from the 7-way up into the passenger compartment, look for a coiled up blue or light green bare-ended wire near the top of the e-brake pedal. To complete wiring the controller, you'll need the # 5506 kit which includes the wire, hardware and circuit breakers necessary to complete the installation. You'll...

Thank you for your purchases and for your photo of the under-dash brake controller connector in your 2016 Acadia. This may have been the cause for the clicking sound since adapters can be pinned out in different ways. The correct Tekonsha wiring adapter for your Acadia is part # 3026-P. • Wiring in a Trailer Brake Controller on a 2013 Chevy Suburban 1500
Chevy used to have a plug in port for a brake controller harness for trucks and full size SUVs but they stopped doing that several years ago (2006 was the last year). Now there should be a bundle of wires tucked up underneath the dash held together with a tag. The tag also lists the functions of the wires on it. You will just need to splice the brake controller wires to the tow package wires by functions. On the controller, the white wire is ground, black is 12 volt power, blue is output...
