Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for Review of Kenda Trailer Tires and Wheels - Tire with Wheel - KE96EV

Hello everybody, this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a look at this Kenda Karrier ST 145R12 S-Trail radial trailer tire in a load range D and it's mounted on this 12 inch black aluminum trailer wheel with the 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern. Now, this tire and wheel assembly is ideal for stock trailers, utility trailers, and campers. The wheel is an aluminum wheel. It's durable, lightweight, and rustproof. And the design is the Americana AM02 series, which you can see is a split five-spoke design.

It has a nice black finish to it. And then they do a machine finish on the face of the spokes and even on the lip which gives a nice shine to the wheel. They do use a clear coat finish on both the front and even on the back of the wheel. It protects it from scuffs and scratches. Now, one of the nice features I like on this wheel is the steel inserts.

These steel inserts are pressed into the lug nut wells. They're designed to help keep your wheel securely in place in your trailer hub. Basically when you put this up onto your hub, your studs will come through the holes, put your lugs on, torque your lugs down. Those inserts prevent those holes from elongating and wearing down over time. So it eliminates the need for constant re-tightening of your lug nuts.

A few dimensions on the wheel itself, the diameter is 12 inches. Width on just the wheel is four inches wide. Now, the wheel does have a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern. And if you want to measure that bolt pattern on a wheel that's an odd number of lugs like this one, what you'll want to do is just pick any one of the holes, let's say this one, and then you're gonna measure across to either one of these holes. But the trick is you measure from the center of the starting hole to the furthest edge of whichever hole you measure to.

So on this one, if we measured it, it's 4-1/2 inches. So it's a five-lug, 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern. Does use a wheel lug size of 1/2 inch by 20 and the weight capacity on just the wheel is 1,520 pounds. Now, if you notice the center cap is not included. If you do want a center cap, we do sell those separately on our website. You do want to get a center cap that'll match the diameter of this pilot hole 'cause when you install your center cap, it'll go through this hole. The diameter of the hole here is 3.19 inches. Now, the tire on this is a Kenda Karrier S-Trail radial tire, offers double steel belts, full nylon ply, combine for a nice superior function and long life. And if you look at the tread design, it's a computer-generated tread design and also offers premium rubber compound materials to give you superior traction in wet or dry conditions. As we mentioned, the tire is an ST, which stands for Special Trailer Tire, has the sturdy sidewall so they can handle heavy loads and it is created specifically for trailers. It's not intended for use in any other vehicles. The tire size, which will be stamped on the sidewall, let's see if we can find it right here. Yeah, there it is right around the wheel, ST for Special Trailer 145R12. The R means it's a radial. The section width on the tire 5.8 inches. Overall height from the bottom to the top when it's inflated is 21.4. This tire is a load range D, which means it's a eight-ply rated tire. Has a maximum load of 1,220 pounds at 65 PSI. And it does come with a speed rating and that is also stamped on the sidewall and it's usually right after the tire size we went over. You'll see a number for the load index and then you'll see the letter M. Speed rating M will mean it's an 81 mile per hour speed rated tire. And this whole tire and wheel assembly does meet the DOT Department of Transportation specifications. But that should do it for a look at the Kenda Karrier ST 145R12 radial trailer tire in a load range D on this 12 inch black aluminum trailer wheel.

  • Is There Smaller 12 inch Trailer Tire that is Radial
Hey William, I am not sure what 12 inch tire size you have currently but we do have a radial version of the 4.80R12 with the part # TT48012C which has an overall diameter of 20.63 inches. Is this smaller than what you have?

  • Reason for Tire Wear on Motorcycle Trailer Tires
Hi Craig; are they the tires you got from us 6 years ago? If so, I expect it is simply the age of the tires. If they are newer tires then it could be several things. Overloading, surpassing the speed rating, flat spots, or even a bent axle/spindle can cause these problems. Is 45 psi the max psi listed on the tire? You always want to keep trailer tires at the max psi unless the manufacturer says otherwise. If you want to move to a 12" it is possible. The Karrier S-Trail Radial Trailer Tire...

  • Upgraded Radial Tire for a Malone Microsport Trailer
I would be happy to Marvin! To replace the tires on your Malone Microsport trailer, I recommend the Karrier S-Trail Radial Trailer Tire with 12" Aluminum AM02 Wheel item # KE96EV. This load range D radial tire has a maximum speed of 81 mph. It has the same 5 on 4-1/2 so it will work perfectly as an upgrade to the bias ply tires on your trailer. If you have any additional questions go ahead and reach out to me in the comment box below and I will be happy to help you.

  • Can I Upgrade My 12 Inch Tires for 13 Inch Tires
Hey, Sam! Thanks for sharing the info about your trailer! We’ve got a few wheel and tire options in your same 145/12 size that are rated for highway speeds up to 80 mph. One of them is part # KE96EV, a solid choice if you want to stick with your current size. The tire is also mounted on an aluminum rim. Now, about moving up to a 13" tire, you can do that, but you’ll want to double check your clearance first. Your current tires have an overall diameter of about 20.5", while the smallest...
