Question:
How to determine how many trailer axle I would nedd for my Bbq-smoker. My pit measures 83inch plus adding another 36inch for the tongue. Just say 12foot total from smokebox to tongue. I would like to put a 5200lb axle put not sure if it safe to use or do they have certain guildline that states that I have to use a double axle. The pits weights between 3000-3500lbs. I live in Louisiana so I might have to find out whats my states rules are. Any help would do, Thanks

For your BBQ smoker trailer you are building, a single 5200 lb axle will work just fine. There are no requirements for single versus tandem axle applications. The biggest thing to consider is the stability of the trailer. I personally would be more comfortable grilling with the weight of the smoker over 3 contact points versus 2, so I recommend using the Dexter Trailer Axle w/ Electric Brakes # 35545E-ST-89 along with the Tandem-Axle Trailer Hanger Kit for Double-Eye Springs # APT3 and leaf springs # e54SR. Then you can use U-bolt kit # APUBR-1 to complete the assembly to your axle.
Let me know if you need anything else, like wheels, wiring, or if you want to go a different route. I've also linked an article on axle placement to assist.
