Question:

does anyone know the size of the bolt? would make sense to have a longer one and put a lock washer and bolt on the other side... mine keeps coming loose.

I spoke with Yakima and they do not have the size of the bolt that holds the stem to the back plate on the Yakima SpareRide 2 Bike Rack part # Y02599. I would check to make sure the weld nut inside the back plate is not damaged as this could be causing it to come loose. If it is you can replace it with the Replacement Back Plate for Yakima SpareTime Bike Carrier part # 8880578. If it is not damaged then I would just use some thread locker on the bolt, part # LT37420.

If you do want to get a new bolt then best option would be to take the bolt you have now to a hardware store and then use the thread charts they have to determine pitch and diameter.
