These Hellwig EZ-990 Helper Springs add up to 2,000 lbs of load-leveling capacity above your factory leaf springs to keep your truck sitting even when towing or hauling light loads. By taking stress off your stock suspension, they help maintain steering control, braking stability, and tire life no matter what’s in the back.
Hauling shouldn’t mean a rough ride. The EZ-990 springs flex with your factory leaf pack to limit bounce and sway while keeping the rear stable under weight. Each side can be adjusted independently using the included U-bolts, so you can fine-tune tension for uneven or off-center loads. Once set up, you get solid stability and a more predictable ride through bumps and turns.
This kit is built for straightforward DIY installation. The step-bracket style mounts above your factory leaf springs and avoids contact with existing hardware. Hi there, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a quick look at this Hellwig EZ-990 Above Axle Helper Spring Set. These are custom helper springs that will bolt on above the factory leaf springs on your vehicle. These are gonna help to reduce sway and body roll, so it's gonna help give you more control and comfort as you're going down the road. It's also gonna help prevent squatting or sagging in the back end when you're towing or hauling loads. These are a custom fit.
They are designed specifically for your 2007 through 2022 GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado 1500. So the way these work, they are going to flex with the factory leaf springs to help limit bouncing while also providing optimal stability. These do have a weight capacity of 2,000 pounds. Now, when you hear that, that's very tempting to think that means it's going to increase your vehicle's weight carrying capacity by 2,000 pounds, and that's not the case. There's no suspension enhancement system on the market that will increase the vehicle's weight-carrying capacity.
So think of it less like a second set of hands that's helping you lift more weight. Think of it more like a back brace. So it's just there to help your factory suspension, take some of that strain off of it, help to extend the life of your factory suspension, your tires, and your brakes. These are gonna be very easy to get installed. They will just bolt above the factory leaf springs.
You can see, they include all the hardware that you're gonna need to get this installed. The step bracket style leaf is going to avoid contact with your factory hardware. So again, very simple to get installed. They do include instructions for you to walk you through that process. A couple things to note.
If your vehicle is equipped with a factory contact overload, it may need to be removed before installing the new helper springs, but it's a good idea to consult the installation guide for that. Also, if your vehicle has composite or plastic leaf springs, and these are not gonna be a good fit for you because these are gonna be more rigid and durable than your plastic leaf springs. So it could potentially cause damage to those factory springs. So don't wanna do that. When you're talking about suspension enhancement, most people are familiar with airbags. It seems to be the most common one. So when you're comparing these to airbags, there's gonna be some benefits and drawbacks. One of the potential drawbacks is that these aren't very adjustable. So you can tighten down your nuts here to give you a little bit more tension and support, give you a firmer ride. But with your airbags, you have very easy adjustability. You can add air to give you more support, let air out for a lighter engagement, that sort of thing. So these aren't going to give you you as much adjustability as airbags. So some people might prefer the airbags for that reason. This set is gonna be a lot more for those of you who just want to kind of set it and forget it. You don't want to have to worry about the maintenance, having to remember to add air, find the air tank, something like that. So these are going to be a little bit less adjustable. So for those of you who want the adjustability, I would recommend airbags. For those of you who just want to install it once, forget about it, this is gonna be a great way to go for you. These are a very durable spring steel construction. They're made here in the U.S.A. So you can trust they are gonna be good quality. It's gonna ensure a nice long lasting performance. They have a silver vein hammer tone powder coat finish. It's gonna help resist corrosion. And they do come with a lifetime warranty. Easy to install, very effective and didn’t have much effect on ride quality. Mine worked on the lowest setting with a 16’ camper.
These springs eliminated the rear sag from adding a shell, rubber bed mat, and a little gear.
Easy to install as well, but recomend having a 7/16X20 tap/die to clean threads on supplied u-bolts.
Easy to install. It should help stabilize the rear springs when I tow our boat.
The product fit well and installed would have been a breeze if it wasn’t for the hardware. The u bolts are very poor quality with burrs and poorly tolerances threads. In addition only half the hardware was the correct size. One set of nuts was too big for the u bolts. The hardware was also low quality. In my opinion it should have all been grade 8 corrosion resistant hardware and it is much lower grade. I ended up having to buy all new hardware to be able to install at an additional cost. Now that it is installed the product works fantastic. Just be aware you may need to purchase extra hardware to get it installed.
Helper springs made my Ram 1500 Conversion Van have a more comfortable ride. The springs raised the profile of the back of the van by about 1-1/2", which is not noticeable and the van still looks good. My RV Travel trailer lowered the back half of the van by about 1", before I installed the helper springs. The helper springs should enhance the ride of the van.
The springs lifted my Tacoma with a cap about an inch higher. It would have been more helpful if the directions indicated that a C-Clamp would be useful to compress the spring ends to allow the u-bolts to be installed. The directions also indicated the long end of the spring should face forward. I measured the spring from the end to the hole and this was the same either way, so was confusing. I purchased longer axle u-bolts since the added thickness of this extra spring made the factory u-bolts too short IMO. I feel that should have been part of this kit. Lastly, the u-bolt on the driver's side did not need to be installed sideways per the instruction. It fit fine just as the other u-boults were installed. Maybe the instructions could be updated to be more accurate.
U bolts are to long and would not allow the prop tightening.
Hellwig customer service advices to shim with washers.

Easy to install, does not affect the ride much , worked great pulling my fish house to the lake. I showed my helper springs to one of my customers, gave him the part number for his truck and he ordered them from e-trailer today. Great product.
Loaded my tacoma with a portaboat on the ladder rack and a few hundred pounds of camping gear. The sag was gone after installing these. The ride is a little bit stiffer when empty as to be expected but not bad even on washboard dirt roads. These can be fairly easily installed and removed if desired. Hardest part is jacking up the truck to sit on the frame
Way better than expected. Huge difference in the rear suspension. It’s almost like having a sway bar.

Put together well, but not as strong as I thought it would be.
Installed on my 2012 Silverado 1500. I haul a Palamino SS1251 truck camper and these really helped with the squat when truck camper is installed. Helps the ride on the highway with much smoother ride. Very easy installation. Tech said to leave 1/2” gap for my application.

This product I have been using for several years. It solved my problems for saggy suspensions on our trucks. they are easy to put on, and not very expensive.
They were very easy to install and I like the added stiffness it gave to my suspension. I have yet to hook up to my camper but I am looking forward to it.
I was a great addition to my RST 1500 Chevy and I transferred to my High Country 1500 Chevy and never missed a beat towing the travel trailer.

Ooo! The light dusting of snow always makes me feel like going on an adventure -- love the photos! So happy to hear these have served you well in your travels :)
It worked perfectly for my needs. It helped my 2011 Silverado from sagging too much without raising the backend of the truck much (1/4 to 1/2) while empty. I can adjust this added spring to have less sag but then I raise the backend a little more. It's at a happy medium. It is easy to fine tune it if I want more or less spring support.
