So, our neighbor recently swapped away from a REESE Sidewinder fifth-wheel kingpin over to a MORryde GooseTech Goose Box. So, he didn't already have chains to go with that, and safety chains are gonna be a legal requirement and just a safety requirement in general when it comes to gooseneck towing. So that way, we have some more attachment points in the event that we disconnect from our goose ball. Now, there's a lot of varieties when it comes to these safety chains, but MORryde has their own special branded ones, which are going to be 3/8 in diameter and gonna give you about a 26,000 pound capacity. So, more than what we need in order to tow our trailer here, 'cause this is right around, like, 15. But installation of these is gonna be super simple and like I said, this does not come with your Goose Box so you will need to purchase these separately.
Now, length can kind of vary chain to chain. In our case, ours is gonna be 87 inches from end to end while we include our clevises here. So, it gives us a lot to work with. We may need to kind of pull that back depending on our setup. I've done a couple of these where we're putting it on a cab and chassis where then the chain starts to hang down too low and could potentially get caught on something.
Now, if you're a cabin chassis, you might need to kind of tighten that chain up a little bit more. But if you just have a standard truck bed, it's okay just kinda letting it sit in the bed. But why don't we go ahead. Only thing you're gonna need to install this is honestly just a pair of pliers. I like to use needle nose just because a lot of the time, they'll get these pretty tight.
If you look at your clevis, there's gonna be a pin and clip that you'll just need to straighten out to get out if I can grab it. I'll just use my fingertip there a little bit. There we go. So, we'll straighten that out and we can pop that out. Our pin will pop out releasing the clevis from the chain, set those down, and then we can start working our way through the cutouts in our GooseTech.
Now, you can see it's got more of a cross shape to it. These links are gonna just slip right on through it and then once you get it to your desired spot, you can drop the chain in and it'll kinda lock into place there. Now, I wanna get these nice and even, so I'm gonna bring some up into here. (chain rattling) And then, we'll copy this over onto the other side. (chain continues rattling) And then, same thing over here, we're just popping it through that slot. (chain continues rattling) It's a little bit uneven. I'm gonna bring that back a bit. (chain continues rattling) That looks good there. And we can just reinstall our clevis just by popping that pin through our clip, and then we're gonna bend those tabs back on that clip there, just how it was before. A little bit easier with the pliers just 'cause this keeps wanting to kind of spin on me. There we go. And then, that will prevent that from being able to back out. And then, all we have to do is just hook up to our truck. You can easily just clip these onto our tow loops in the bed of the truck, and we're all safe to drive. I know some vehicles have, like, really, really thick safety chain loops and if that is the case for you, you're looking at right around 1 1/4 inches for our opening here. Obviously, the clip portion of this could potentially kind of bring that down a little bit. So, let's see what that's looking like. So, 1 1/8 for that. So realistically, not too big of a problem, but you got a lot of, you know, real wide open mouth here on the clevis and the entirety of the clevis and the chain is gonna be a nice steel construction with a zinc coating over it, so that way, this stays looking nice and shiny for you throughout the life of your trailer. Now, the last thing to do whenever you're done towing is to just kind of hook it up onto your hitch. And with the GooseTech, it's a little bit slick at the back here 'cause it's got this angle. So, this isn't wanting to clip on too well, you kinda wanna go sideways with it or actually just hook it onto the loose bit of chain that we have sitting above, just so that way, it's not dangling down in the wind and potentially hitting anything else and kind of helps protect to keep it out of the rain a little bit better. But with all that being said, that is gonna do it for our closer look at MORryde's gooseneck safety chain kit. My name's Kevin, and if you still have some questions, you're still trying to figure out what's gonna be the right length for your specific setup, definitely feel free to reach out to us via our Ask the Experts link, a comment on this video, or a phone call to our customer service department and we'd be happy to help you out on your journey.
