Cargo boxes, bags, and baskets are great for transporting gear on your vehicle's roof. A cargo box has the added benefits of an aerodynamic shape that reduces drag and wind noise, a hard shell to protect your gear, and a higher degree of weather resistance. And you can latch and lock a cargo box for added protection against theft.
The SkyBox 12 has 12 cu ft of space for sports equipment or camping gear for up to 2 people. The aerodynamic, low-profile design and the dimpled lid with Carbonite texture help to reduce wind noise and drag. The box opens and latches from both sides and is designed to provide clearance when you open your rear hatch. Sliding clamps accommodate most crossbar styles and spreads so you can install the box in minutes without tools. The durable yet lightweight ABS plastic construction prevents warping, denting, or cracking.
The SkyBox lid opens from both sides. Whether you mount it closer to the driver's side or passenger's side of your car, this dual-side opening lets you easily access your cargo. If you are parked on a busy street, in a tight parking lot, or even next to a campground picnic table, you have the option of opening the lid from the side of the vehicle that works best for you.
Patented EndoSkel stiffeners act like ribs to make this lid 3 times stiffer than other Yakima cargo box lids. The fortified lid has an easy-access edge and spring-loaded hinges that allow for smooth, one-handed operation. The extra-stiff lid also helps reduce road noise and vibration, and it guards against dents and scratches when the box is in storage.
The SkyBox has SuperLatch security latches on both sides to ensure that the lid is completely closed. The SuperLatch prevents you from removing the key from the lock unless all 3 internal latches are engaged. That way, you are prevented from removing the key and driving off with an unlocked box. This security system also seals the box against dirt and moisture. Each SuperLatch includes an SKS lock core that can be swapped out to make all your Yakima gear keyed alike.
The SkyBox installs with mounting clamps that slide along tracks in the floor of the box. These clamps fit most crossbar styles, and they adjust for different crossbar spreads. To adjust a clamp, loosen both knobs and slide the clamp to the desired location. Then tighten both knobs and push the cam lever down to close the clamp around your crossbar.
The SkyBox has an undercut tail designed to prevent interference with your vehicle's rear hatch or trunk. This tail provides more space for your hatch to fully open when compared with boxes without the undercut tail.
An integrated track system in the floor of the box provides tie-down points for securing your cargo. These anchor points work great with Yakima's SkyBox cargo net (Y07146 - sold separately).

Undercut tail provides hatch clearance.Sturdy, low profile, easy to open/close. It worked to expand road trip space for 2 adults, one dog on a 2,500 mile trip. No leaks during major rainstorm, did not feel drag with wind from driving. We did use soft side duffles as packing room was snug. 2 duffle bags ( moderate size), a few other small bags, it worked. Was pleased with the carrier. One note, we needed to get it professionally mounted as it was not standard for Acura RDX.
It was an adventure to get to fit on outback factory installed rails with it being a so close together but was able to flip the locking feet to get every to fit nice and tight look great and no wind noise.
Great product. Purchased this due to its slim profile and length that way we can carry all of our camping gear and whitewater boating gear. The length allows us to place the paddles in the carrier instead of in the car and needing to fold a seat down. It's width allows us to have plenty of room left on our roof rack for our boats. Love how simple and easy it is to put on and off the car when not in use. Looks great, makes little to no noise, and can hardly tell it's on the car. Love that it has built in gear tie down points inside. Highly recommend and worth the cost. Should last my lifetime and fit any future car we get due to its ability to adjust.
I've owned other Yakima products. This is as a good as the rest.
I have only used the cargo box three times since purchasing it about one year ago, but I am very happy with it. It nearly doubles our cargo space, and opens up the Subaru for the occasional guest. On our way up the coast last year, the cargo box was full, and mpg was reduced from 27 to 24 mpg. On the way home, the cargo box was nearly empty, and mpg bumped up to 26 mpg. Of course, some of the reduction from our normal 27 mpg is attributable to added weight, but we only lost 1 mpg due to the cargo box. It is very quiet at freeway speeds, and adds no noticeable roll or sway to the driving. I need to be careful when opening the car's rear hatch since the cargo box does interfere with it. Installing, locking, opening and closing the cargo box is very simple, and I love being able to access luggage from either side of the car. And it keeps the rain out! I plan to strap the cargo box onto our new Subaru Ascent next month and head cross country. Thank-you for an excellent product!
Box was well packed and was delivered in a timely manner. I especially appreciate that we didn’t have to pay extra for shipping.
Great deal. Super smooth shipping.
Company stands behind it's service. Box arrived with some cosmetic damage from shipping. They offered partial refund or return. That's how you earn return business!
Never used it. Its still sitting in the original foam wrap in my garage.

You mentioned that you have not used the cargo box and I wanted to ask if there was anything about the cargo box that has made you not use it?

This cargo box is 92 inches over all in length. To check that the hatch will fully open with the cargo box installed then you will want to measure from the center of your front cross bar to the line where the roof and hatch meet. This cargo box requires this measurement to be 57 inches. Depending on what you are carrying you can look at a smaller cargo box like part # RRRMFZ66 which is 76 inches long overall.

the lock can be difficult to operate.
Excellent way to carry our skis and other stuff.
I replaced an old Thule box with this. My opinion is that the locking mechanism, the clamping system, and the hinges are superior to the Thule's. Especially the locking mechanism. I used to have to wrestle the Thule box to get things lined up so that I could close and lock the box. And the bonus is that this box was less money (than an equivalent Thule) and eTrailer shipped it for free!
This box is great. After owning it for a year I have been able use for summer roads trips and winter ski adventures. Easy to load on top of a Honda Pilot with OEM roof racks and rails. The dual sided opening makes it easier to tie down everything inside.
Works like a champ. My station wagon has lots of room until you add luggage for two, an electric Igloo cooler, a bicycle, a crate for a dog and the dog. That's when the roof box comes handy for that week in the mountains. I'm very happy with the purchase.
I got this a month before our trip to be sure I was able to get it (assumed supply chain issues) before the vacation season. I didn’t actually travel with this besides a trip around the neighborhood. I’ll update after my 1k mile road trip in July.
1. Delivery - free! Wow. No where else had free. The box was damaged but the Yakima was fine. Also it came with 2 massive crates which told about a day to burn.
2. Install - so the hooks are tight for the VW OEM roof Rack but I got it to work. I do wish the adjustment screws were a bit longer but it goes on tight and won’t be moving.
3. Fit - I was a bit worried about the tailgate hitting when opening but the mounts are fully adjustable so no issues on my end. It isn’t heavy, but awkward. I did put it on myself but two people would be much easier.
4. Storage - I rigged up some anchors and a ratchet system to hang it on the ceiling of the garage. It’s big but it’s light. Just kinda awkward.
Sleek design. Easy to install and take down. My wife and I can install and take it down quickly. Fits much more than expected. Traveled across multiple states twice with it. The box even full didn't effect the way the vehicle drove or performed. Just remember your vehicle is taller with it installed! We had no problems, but you do have to consider that when going into parking garages and lower clearance areas. We're about to travel again and are looking forward to stuffing it full again!
After one year of owning and using the The SkyBox 16, I have no complaints. As a family of four, the box holds our luggage, which is the size of carry on luggage for airplanes. The SkyBox 16 is about one inch wider than the Thule 16 cubit box, but the Thule is about one inch taller. I am glad that I went with the wider box than the taller box. The width allows for some stuffing room around luggage. Also, if the box were one inch taller, I could not pull into, nor out of, my garage due the height of my garage entrance. The box fits perfectly on my 2013 Subaru Outback, allowing the hatchback to open and not protruding over the front windshield. The box installs easily on the cross bars and locks securely in place. A feature of the Yakima is that when the locking handle of the box lid is closed, the box lid is fully closed and locked. You do not have to worry about the lid being partially unsecured. This gives confidence when traveling at interstate speeds. The quality of construction and the material is very good. The box does cause a reduction of MPG's of about 2-3 gallons. This is not the box's fault; just physics. The only negative is that the floor of the box is not a smooth/level surface due to the locking knobs that clamp the box to the cross bars. This is more of a nuisance than a problem. Even with that caveat, I still give the SkyBox 16 a five out of five stars. I should also add that purchasing this box through etrailer was the best decision I made; good prices and excellent customer service.
I bought this (with Rhino Rack Roof Rack Legs and Crossbars) for my 2019 Honda Civic Hatchback and it was perfect: it fit correctly snugly, it gave me all the storage space my family needed, and I felt safe with it on my car.
This was my first time using and buying anything like this before and I found setup and installation easy, no special tools required. My advice is that you take your time and you'll have no problems.
My only wish was that it had a combination lock instead of a key lock; I'm better at remembering a combination than not losing a key ; )
This box was perfect! Added an enormous amount of additional storage capacity for our Rav4. I was able to fit one large "checked-bag", a "carry-on", a pack-n-play, small storage bin, bungee cords + some kids toys all on the roof! Standard Toyota cross-bars. Installation was super simple; the box closes very securely and stays quite snug to the installed position. It was a bit unnerving at first carrying so much on the roof (i've seen the horror stories of boxes opening/flying off at 80MPH) but this box held up perfect! We averaged about 75-80MPH over 3000 miles of driving with maybe 100lbs of load in the box. Fuel economy dropped by a few mpg (36 -> 33) but overall this was a great purchase. etrailer was a fantastic retailer as well! Delivery estimates were right on schedule, and delivery was relatively straight-forward.
