What’s the weight limit for the NX Skinny, and how do I know if I’m exceeding it with my gear? 2024 kia sportage – Nicole

Great question, Nicole! The Yakima SkyBox NX Skinny Rooftop Cargo Box # Y93QD itself can hold plenty of weight, but here’s the catch: your vehicle and roof rack system will be the limiting factor. Most factory racks top out around 120–150 lbs total, including the weight of the box (41 lbs in this case). So you might have 60–100 lbs of usable cargo weight, depending on your setup.
Check your owners manual for your vehicle’s roof weight limit. It’s better to stay well under that limit, especially if you’re loading bulky items like coolers or camping gear. If you have the factory roof rack, it looks like it can hold 165lbs, but I do recommend verifying.
Let me know if you need any additional help with this. I know it's strange that the roof box itself isn't weight rated, but again, that's because the roof rack and the vehicle's roof have weight limits lower than that of the box.
