Highlights

  • Improves Output From Small Arrays: 98% efficient MPPT tracks changing light better than basic controllers.
  • Handles Battery Upgrades Cleanly: Supports lithium, AGM, gel, and flooded with dedicated charge profiles.
  • 10 Amp Output Defines System Capacity: Charge current sets usable array size, especially on 12V systems.
  • Protects Small Loads From Over-Discharge: Load output disconnects at a preset voltage to protect batteries.
  • Real-Time Monitoring via Bluetooth: VictronConnect app supports wireless setup, monitoring, updates, and sync.
  • 75V PV Input Sets Wiring Limits: Input voltage cap matters when panels are wired in series.

Features to know about

Pulls More Energy From Small Solar Setups

Small systems lose charging time fast when a basic controller cannot keep up with changing light. This unit uses ultra-fast Maximum Power Point Tracking with 98 percent maximum efficiency and an advanced Maximum Power Point Detection algorithm for partial shading. You get steadier charging from a small array instead of watching output fall off when light conditions shift.

Adapts to Battery Changes Without Replacement

Switching battery types can force a controller swap if the charging profile is too limited. This unit supports lithium, AGM, gel, and flooded batteries with automatic voltage selection and dedicated charging profiles. You can move from lead-acid to lithium or replace a battery bank later without replacing the controller too.

Protects Small Loads From Pulling Batteries Too Low

In smaller setups, even a modest DC load can drag battery voltage down faster than expected. This controller includes an intelligent load output with built in protection that disconnects loads at a preset voltage, and the BatteryLife algorithm adjusts load disconnect levels to ensure regular full recharging. The result is a system that keeps small loads running without repeatedly draining the battery too far.

Gives You Real System Visibility Without Extra Hardware

Limited feedback makes it hard to tell if charging is normal or if settings need attention. Built-in Bluetooth Smart connectivity works with the VictronConnect app for wireless setup, monitoring, updates, and charging synchronization, and the VE.Direct communication port supports wired connection to GX devices, computers, and the VRM remote management platform. You can check charging behavior and adjust settings without adding a separate Bluetooth module first.

Recovers From Deep Battery Discharge

A deeply discharged battery can leave a small solar setup looking dead even when the controller is still in place. This unit includes fully discharged battery recovery capability that initiates charging from zero volts and reconnects to Li ion batteries with integrated disconnect protection. You can bring a protected or heavily drained battery back into charging instead of assuming the controller has stopped doing its job.

Video Transcript for Review of Victron Solar Charge Controllers - SmartSolar MPPT Solar Charge Controller - VN23ZR

Hi everybody, Andy here with etrailer. Let's take a quick look together at this Victron SmartSolar MPPT Solar Charge Controller. Now this controller's job is to take the power that's coming in from your solar panels and charge your batteries as efficiently and safely as possible. Now this does use the MPPT technology, which stands for Maximum Power Point Tracking. In simple terms, that means that this is constantly adjusting itself to pull the maximum usable power from your solar panels, especially when sunlight changes due to clouds, shade, or time of day. So this can noticeably improve charging efficiency.

This is designed for small to medium solar setups. This is gonna work with 12 or 24 volt battery systems. It's gonna auto detect which one you have, which is great. This can handle up to 75 volts from solar panels, and it's going to give you up to 10 amps of charging current to your battery. So that's gonna make this a great fit for things like your RV, van, boat, small off-grid cabins, sheds, or backup power systems.

One of the nicest features is that this does have Bluetooth built in, so you're gonna be able to connect to it using Victron, free Victron Connect app on your smartphones, it's a free download either in the Android or iOS app store. And with that app and that Bluetooth capability, you're gonna be able to see how much solar power you're getting. You're gonna be able to check battery voltage and charge status. You can change settings based on your battery type, whether it's AGM, lead acid, lithium, so on. And so because of that, no extra screen or accessories are gonna be needed.

Your phone becomes that display. And this also includes smart battery protection. This uses multi-stage charging to avoid overcharging and it's gonna help prevent deep discharge and it's generally going to extend your battery life. And if you wanna connect to a larger Victron monitoring system later, this does also have a VE direct port for wired communication. So a lot of features packed into this small package.

Speaking of size, lemme give you some measurements here just so you have a good idea of the size and with the space that you're thinking about putting this in. So looking at the overall, what I'm calling width, pretty close to 4-1/2-inches. And then the height about 3-7/8-inches, almost 4-inches. And then the depth about 1-1/2-inches deeper. So let me back that up just a little so you can see, 1-1/2-inches. So if you're looking for a reliable, efficient, and easy to monitor solar charge controller for a smaller system and you like the idea of checking everything with your phone, this is gonna be a great, solid, really well respected choice from the from Victron. It's not going to be what you want to say the most inexpensive option to go with, but Victron is known for quality products, accurate products, and really long-term reliability. So it's gonna be a great investment. If you happen to have any other questions, whether it's about this or anything that we have here at etrailer, don't hesitate to reach out. One other thing, if you need help installing something like this or with the solar setup in your RV or camper or what have you, we do have an installer locator on our product page. We partner with installers around the country in case you want something installed that you don't wanna mess with it yourself. So typically underneath the photo section on this product page, we have a installer locator link. If you hit that link, put in some information about where you live, that locator will find an installer that we're partnered with in your area to help you get this installed. Well, again, my name is Andy. Thank you for joining me.
