Video Transcript for All You Need to Know About the Curt Pintle Hook for 2" Hitches

What's up everybody it's AJ with etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna be checking out this curt pintle hook. Now, this is going to go in your two inch hitch. We have an adapter on our two and a half inch hitch here, right now, today, that's going to allow this to fit in there. And this is going to hook up to your lunette ring, so you can pull those kinds of trailers. It's going to be really easy to operate and use, and you can pull the pin here, and pull up on this latch, that brings this part up.

Now, it's ready for you to back up that ring, put it down, lower it over hook, close it back out, and you're good to go. Let's check it out. So this is going to work with lunette rings with a inner diameter of two and a half inches. So, just keep that in mind, when you're thinking about what trailer you're going to use this with, this will hold up to, it will tow up to 20,000 pounds, so, you have to keep that in mind too, with whatever you're going to haul on your trailer, and put on your truck. The whole construction of the pintle hook is going to be a steel forged construction.

So, it's going to hold up to the elements that you leave in the back of your truck, on the hitch all the time, or you throw it on the inside. It's going to hold up, it's going to last you a long time. One thing I will note though, it does not come with a pin and clip. So, that's what you're going to put here in the hitch pin hole. So, I recommend getting an each a locking pin and clip.

It's got a barrel lock on the end, and you turn it to tighten it down, and lock at the same time, which is going to keep it protected against people trying to lock, pick it, or even just mess with it. Now, it's time to go ahead and hook up that lunette ring. So, I'm gonna just back up the pintle hook in the place, and we'll get it attached. Now, I got back up, and in place, I can go ahead and lower the trailer, which is going to lower the lunette ring into the hook there. That's good right there.

Now, we got to lower down in to place into that hook, push that back down, and then, place our pin. Overall, super easy to use. I back it up with no issues, stopped right on the dime, dropped it down there, you see the lunette rings down there in that hook. It's nice and secure, it's not going anywhere, especially with that pin in place, and this part last up here. Now, the only thing I would say is it doesn't have some of the features of the other premium ones like, "I like that there's a bumper, I want the other curt ones that you can back into that ring right into, and then, lower it from there." That's really helpful. I like that one. And then, some of the other ones that actually had the ball mount on there too, that way you don't have to switch it out, depending on what your towing. So, if you just want to tow your heavy equipment, you need this, or you have a boat with a coupler. You could hook that up there with a ball mount, and use the same one. But, if you don't have another trailer, you only got to work trailer. It's going to be just fine for that. You don't have to swap anything out. Thanks for hanging out. And I hope this helped..

  • Dimensions of the Curt Pintle Hook # C48004
Definitely! The measurement of the circular area when the hook is completely closed on the # C48004 is 2.03" across. As far as the distance between the narrowest point of the top and lower of the opening when the hook is open, that measurement is 2.5" across. Both of these measurements were conducted with calipers. I went ahead and attached pictures of these measurements for your convenience.

  • What is the Tongue Weight Capacity of Curt Pintle Hook
Tongue weight isn't considered as much of a factor for pintle hooks because there isn't as much downward force onto the hitch like there is with a standard coupler. With that being said a pintle hook's tongue weight is considered to be 1/4 of the GTW, so for Curt Pintle Hook # C48004 the tongue weight would be 5,000 pounds.

  • Can Curt Pintle Hook # C48004 be Used with 3 inch Lunette Ring
Hey Audry, yes the Curt Pintle Hook for 2" Hitches # C48004 will work with your 3 inch diameter lunette ring. This is perfectly safe to use with what you have. Larger rings have a bit more capacity. It's like hitch balls. Smaller balls are okay to use with lighter trailers but larger balls are needed for bigger trailers.

  • Curt Pintle Hook for 2" Hitches C48004 - What Is The Diameter Of Retaining Pin Hole?
Hello Michael, thanks for getting in touch. The Curt Pintle Hook for 2" Hitches # C48004 does use a standard 5/8" pin for the retaining pin or hitch pin as we call it. For a standard pin and clip you can use part # 337HP6256WC, or for a locking pin use part # e98881. Reply below and let me know if you need anything else.

  • Looking For Pintle Hitch Ball Mount
Hello Robert, thanks for reaching out. I am happy to look into this, but I am not quite clear on what you are looking for. What kind of connection does your trailer use? Does it have a lunette ring? If so, we do have a pintle hitch mount that can work with a standard 2" hitch receiver like most truck use. Take a look at the following: - Curt Pintle Hook for 2" Hitches - 20,000 lbs # C48004 Is this what you were looking for? If not let me know more details and I am happy to look into it.

  • Can the Buyers Products Pintle Hook Hitch Be Used W/ a Dexter Lunette Ring
Hey Terry, the Buyers Products 10 Ton Combination Hitch with Mounting Kit # 33710057 is more designed to work in the utility/construction space so it's not going to be the best suited to be used with the Dexter Lunette eye # T1812800. To use that Lunette ring, you'd be better off using a standard pintle hook like the Curt Pintle Hook for 2" Hitches # C48004. If I can help you with anything else, please feel free to drop a comment and let me know!

  • Options for a Pintle Hook to Connect to a Trailer with 8 Inches of Rise
As you obviously have already learned there are a lot of variables into building a trailer. And I can't tell you what is or isn't completely safe in your exact circumstances. I highly recommend having your setup evaluated by a professional welder who has experience with trailers. Some of the components you're trying to combine may be just fine but only someone with experience and ability to test such products can really tell you that. I can't recommend using # RP45294 with # C48550....

  • Difference Between Curt Pintle Hooks for 2 Trailer Hitches
The only difference between the two pintle hooks you referenced is the weight capacity. - Curt Pintle Hook for 2" Hitches # C48005: 10,000 lbs - Curt Pintle Hook for 2" Hitches # C48004: 20,000 lbs Apart from that, both pintle hooks are made of forged steel, fit lunette ring couplers with a minimum inner diameter of 2-1/2", measure 14-1/2" total and 9-1/2" from the center of the hitch pin hole to the center of the pintle hook. • What is the Difference Between The 2-1/2 Inch Pintle and a 3 Inch Pintle
Pintle hitches are made to fit certain sized Lunette rings. The rings that we carry are only available in 2-1/2" or 3" diameter sizes. For example, the Curt Pintle Hook for 2" Hitches # C48004 fits lunette ring couplers with a minimum inner diameter of 2-1/2". If you already have a lunette ring measure the inner diameter and make sure the Pintle hitch you choose will fit the ring. As long as it fits and is rated high enough for your trailer's weight it'll work for you.

  • Pintle Hitch That Fits 2" Receiver and Lunette Ring With 2-1/2" Inner Diameter
We do have a pintle hook that fits in a 2" hitch and will work with a lunette ring that has an inner diameter of more than 2-1/2", the Curt # C48004. I asked some colleagues and we weren't quite sure what you were referring to in terms of cross-section but if you were referring to the width of the ring itself then the Curt pintle hook would still work. Should you mean something else by cross section or have other questions let me know. I've added a link to a video review of this hook for...

  • How To Tow Military Trailer with Lunette Ring Using 2" Hitch
It sounds like you are looking for a hitch mounted pintle hook to use the lunette ring mounted on your military trailer. If that is the case then the Curt Pintle Hook part # C48004 is what I recommend. That said, there really isn't one that will be more secure than another.

  • Tongue Weight Capacity for Pintle Hook part # C48004
For the applications that we normally deal with we don't have a trailer hitch that has a 5,000 lb tongue weight capacity. The Pintle Hook part # C48004 does have a 5,000 lb tongue weight capacity though so if you have a heavy duty vehicle that was rated for that you'd be able to take advantage of that.

  • Recommended Pintle Hitch for a 825l Gator with 2 Inch Trailer Hitch Receiver
We have a couple options for you. I recommend the Curt Pintle Hook for 2" Hitches - 10,000 lbs # C48005 or # TR63043 either of which will fit in a 2 inch receiver as you stated. This is rated for well over what a UTV can handle. We also have the Curt Pintle Hook for 2" Hitches - 20,000 lbs # C48004 which is rated for double that capacity.

  • Pintle Hook Recommendation with 20k Capacity
Sounds like you are looking for a pintle hook style ball mount to tow your trailer that weighs right at 19,500 lbs when fully loaded. The part # C48004 will fit a 2 inch hitch and has a 20k capacity and the # C48010 will fit a 2-1/2 inch hitch and also has a 20k capacity. Either should work well but you will need to measure the size of the hitch opening on your truck to determine which you would need.

  • 2-Inch Pintle Hook for Use with M614 Military Surplus Trailer
Military equipment, including trailers, does tend to be built to a pretty high capacity. The 20K Curt 2-Inch Pintle Hook # C48004 is a good example. Pintle hitches are often found in industrial, agricultural and of course military applications so they tend to have pretty substantial capacities. The lighter side of overkill is safety margin, a good thing always, but if 20K seems a bit much for your camping application then you might prefer Tow Ready 10K pintle # TR63043 or Curt # C48005.

  • Is There A Shorter Length Option For The Curt Forged Receiver Mount Pintle Hook for 2 Inch Hitches?
The reason for the long neck on the curt # C48004 is to help prevent your trailer from hitting your vehicle if ever jack knifed. Sometimes trailers using the pintle setup have a bit bulkier coupler so it could come in contact with your vehicle a little easier compared to the sometimes smaller 2" ball couplers. The only options we have for the 2" hitch are going to stick out just as much unless you go with a different type of pintle setup. If your concerns are running into the pintle whenever...

The Curt Pintle Hook for 2" Hitches - 20,000 lbs, # C48004 will be at its full capacity for a 10 ton trailer, but is rated to handle it. Your 2010 Ram 3500 HD is only rated to tow 12,100 at the bumper unless you have done extensive upgrades in making it a service truck. My concern with this application isn't the pintle hook, but rather your transmission, so I recommend looking into your vehicle capacities with the upgrades and allowing that to limit your towing for safety.
