Question:
is there a particular reason the distance between the rear of the hook and the pin hole are so far apart? Do you know if anyone makes a 10 ton capacity Pintle hitch with a shorter neck?

The reason for the long neck on the curt # C48004 is to help prevent your trailer from hitting your vehicle if ever jack knifed. Sometimes trailers using the pintle setup have a bit bulkier coupler so it could come in contact with your vehicle a little easier compared to the sometimes smaller 2" ball couplers.
The only options we have for the 2" hitch are going to stick out just as much unless you go with a different type of pintle setup. If your concerns are running into the pintle whenever you're not using it I recommend getting the Pivot Lock Hitch Pin - 5/8" Diameter - 2-5/8" Long Item # 37201031.
This will make removing and installing your pintle quick and easy.
