Video Transcript for Thule Hitch Locks THSTL2 Review

Speaker 1: Today, we're going to be taking a look at the Thule Snug Tite Hitch Lock and Anti-Rattle Device. This unit is used to lock your bike rack to the hitch of your vehicle and reduce the amount of play and rattle from within the hitch. The unit does feature the integrated dust cover. This is going to keep the lock clean, so that does a great job at keeping dirt, grime, and moisture out of the lock core. Flips up to expose the shutter and then folds down, snaps into place to keep the elements away and out of the lock core. Now, the unit also features the Thule One Key System compatibility, so it can be keyed alike with other Thule One Key System locks. Keyed alike locking cylinders are available in packs of two, four, six, eight, and 10, all of which are available on and sold separately here at etrailer.com.This is designed to work on both 1-1/4" and 2" hitch-mounted racks from Thule. It fits the Thule Parkway, Revolver, Ridgeline, Roadway Hitching Post Pro, Vertex T2, Expressway, and Trailblazer Series bike racks.

The pin diameter is 1/2". Few measurements to go over with you real quick. The pin length from the bottom of the bolt head to the end of the pin is about 4-1/2", and then the threaded area, that's going to measure about 1-3/8" long to that point there.Again, this is designed to not only lock your bike rack to the hitch of your vehicle, but as it threads through, it actually pulls the shank of the accessory or of the bike rack to one side of the hitch, which is going to reduce the amount of wobble, reduce the amount of play and rattle from within the hitch. Then, this just snaps on the other side, and then you would need to move it to a locked position.Does come with two keys as well as the included tool to get it tightened down inside the hitch. You could also use a 3/4" wrench or a 3/4" socket.

Then, this key right here is the key that you would use to insert the lock into the lock housing. Then, these two keys are the ones that operate the actual lock. That's going to do it for today's look at the Thule Snug Tite Hitch Lock and Anti-Rattle Device.

Ordered the Draw-Tite 24763 for my 2015 Honda Civic Sedan, and was very satisfied at the speed and detail of not only the correspondence and email between etrailer.com but also the shipping speed and condition of packaging. I received this in six days from start to finish of order. I did not spring for faster shipping and was satisfied with this type of time frame considering the size and weight of packaging. I also got the Thule Hitching Post TH934XTR four bike rack and THSTL2 hitch lock anti-rattle device. I had planned ahead by watching all of the great videos on etrailer and printed out some instructions from the site. I guess I shouldn't have been surprised with their attention to detail that this was unnecessary as they included a copy of the same instructions I printed in the box. The install went exactly like the instructions/videos said it would and if I hadn't been interested in getting the beauty plastic underbody piece back on I could have been done in fifteen minutes with a lift and another set of hands. All in all a very easy kit to install, and thanks to etrailer for the speed, quality, and including all the necessary hardware and instructions. 5/5 would definitely do business with again and recommend. 269804

For reasons unknown, Thule manufactures the TH958 Parkway bike rack to attach to a standard 2" hitch with a bolt that only goes halfway through the business end of the slinger. This lock unit also only threads halfway though and you affix the keyed end on the left hand side of the TH958. This works particularly well, if you are left handed. Why the TH958 was not tapped out throughout is problematic, because if it was, then you could place the lock on the left, or, if you are right-handed, on the right. The THSTL2 does protect the slinger section from being taken. However, this leaves the pivot section and the arm assembly vulnerable. Both sections are are affixed with hex screws and bolts that can easily be removed with two crescent wrenches. In order to remedy the situation forget the bolts and make the attachments with the hex screws and invest in a couple of stainless steel wingnuts. In order to make sure your unit will stay yours be best prepared to break down the rack and store it inside your vehicle. The wingnuts will make the chore easier. At 44 bucks and change it is not worth it. Perhaps Thule will one day address these issues. In the meantime, caveat emptor. 79154

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review here Bill. The reason behind the shorter bolt is that all the bolt-in Thule hitch mounted carriers have a nut welded to the inside of the stinger portion that s into the receiver and this bolt only needs to pass through that nut to snug this up in the receiver. We found that with a longer bolt there is too much redundant tightening if the bolt were to pass all the way through, that is also why the STL2 bolt is not fully threaded. As for the locking features, these are intended to deter any theft or vandalism, as with all locks.

Decide last year to go with a trailer hitch bike rack. We had other strap-ons but they were all terrible. The actual hitch was easy to install, according to my husband. He and a friend attached it with no difficulty. As I have a Subaru Outback, I bought the specific one indicated and worked great. As for the Thule bike rack, we could not be happier. So easy to use and solid! No movement on the bikes at all. Our son lives in New Orleans La. and we spent 2 weeks with him over the Christmas/New Year holidays. He had a bike trail close to his house and then we went north to another beautiful trail. 3000 miles round trip and the bikes and rack didn't so much as "blip" on the ride. We checked the bikes and racks when we stopped and never were we concerned about safety. We always had the bike locks in place, but we were not concerned bikes or the rack would be a problem. I have been approached by people asking if I liked the rack and where did I purchase it? I give praise to e-trailer for their products and customer service, always recommending them. Looking forward to another season of biking and using the rack! 374860

Thanks for following up - impressive. The products I bought from etrailer are great. The rack turned out to be quite the attraction as I had several people see me with it in use and come over to see how it works and ask where did I get it. Hopefully you received some orders from some of the people I referred to etrailer. The products I purchased and your service is great.

Good lock. When tightened down, it really locks the hitch and rack together. Driving down the road, I noticed no shake at all - even going over some low grade bumps. Of course you can use the bolt Thule furnishes to lock it down if you don't want the anti-theft protection. I would have rated it "Excellent" except for the cost. Surely 50 bucks is overpriced! - BUT, it does the job 146478

Both the rack and the lock are working quite well. The rack is a quality product and I enjoy using it.

Still using this product. Works fine. There is a little movement in the hitch. I thought with the bolt threads that this product would secure the bike rack tightly.

Angel M - 05/29/2014

The threaded bolts will pull a lot of the play out, but they can't always get it all. You can snug them down pretty tight too. We use a 1/2 inch drive ratchet with a socket. We'll get it snug, then give it another 1/4 to 1/2 a turn.

Kudos to etrailer.com! They made my first time experience great and I would recommend them highly! Not only were they knowledgeable about their products and excelled in customer service beyond expectations, they emailed me the order status at every step and provided a UPS tracking number. Katie was exceptional and even called me to ensure complete customer satisfaction. Thank you, Katie, for your personal follow up as you are truly a valuable asset to etrailer.com. Oh, by the way, the products were exceptional quality and the hitch was extremely easy to install. Your pricing was the best compared to other competitor websites! Wishing etrailer.com continued success! 352207

Everything seems great so far with my Hitching post. Hook up was a breeze on my wife 4-Runner and my Ram. Hitch lock works well, as does the swagman adapter bar on my daughters bike. So far I've used it for daily trips to my commuter parking lot to bike from, and a long trip to the ADK mountains. The only gottcha I've noticed so far is that you have to watch how much you pull on the bikes with the strap when using the sway cradles. While loading up and attempting to lock a rental my dad got, I noticed we almost ripped off the plastic bars that the cradle mounts to under the rack. Otherwise, been very happy. Good customer service and timely shipping were appreciated. 276242

Well built and sturdy rack. It was east to assemble and slid right into the hitch. I didn't know about the extra bar for womans bike so it was a hassle getting my wife's bike on the rack. I will be purchasing the adapter bar. 226915

I seldom write reviews of products and services, but I do want anyone looking at a bike carrier to know, you want to go through ETRAILER. THULE is an incredible brand, and we have a car top carrier from them, and love it. What’s great about ETRAILER was their website, the delivery, the follow up and overall sense of commitment to the customer. So, my THULE carrier is on my JEEP, we’ve already been using our bikes more than ever, and I can’t wait for an out of town trip to use it....The product is incredibly well designed and constructed of solid materials....couldn’t be happier! Thanks THULE and ETRAILER! 515580

Easy to install....etrailer corp. was fantastic with their advice and guidance. Product so much easier than roof mounted racks. Looking forward to extended use. Thanks for your help. 406560

I would say that a locking anti-rattle bolt is a must, I'm just sorry that Thule requires so much money for this. I would buy a cheaper device but I could not be sure the threaded screw would work on a Thule hitch carrier. Another issue is the locking end of the bolt sticks out a good bit from the side of the hitch receiver and is not as thick as the screw end so if someone really wanted the bike rack I think they could saw the lock end off. I guess, like other things, this won't guarantee against theft but it is a deterrent and it's a lot better than nothing, but pricey. 409529

Horrendous customer service once I paid, just like everyone says. They are thoughtful and responsive in terms of selecting the appropriate product -- in my case, the hitch mount and Thule bike rack and the THSTL2 lock set. They never sent the lock set, and I had to sit through the interminable holds for customer service (funny -- when I was looking to buy, I could talk to someone right away, but once they had my money, it was very different). After several rounds, a supervisor (Carmel) assured me that she would refund my money, but never did so. Aargh. 402713

Product order/delivery experience was outstanding. Product is definitely to carry my two bikes safely. Assembly was easy and fits on my new truck just fine. The shipment contained all three items that were ordered all coming in one box with a label clearly showing content of shipment.... so nice to not have anything missing. Out of the box in just a few minutes and passed my test drive.... solid fit, no rattles, and looks pretty good too! I purchased the Snug Site Hitch Lock and Anti Rattle Device Bike Adaptor Bar for my wife's bike. Very satisfied! 339375

The THSTL2 Snug Tite-Lock is simple to use. The bolt shank the lock attaches to projects far enough beyond the receiver that it could be cut with an air chisel or hacksaw, particularly with a 1-1/4" receiver. I don't know if the bolt is made with hardened steel. Yakima's lock system looks very similar. This lock will slow down a thief and probably discourage them. I wish I could have had a choice on the lock cylinder--I have a Thule cargo box and I would have liked to have gotten a lock cylinder that matched the locks on the cargo box. 24804

All the products I bought are in super quality, road way bike carrier, women bicycle adapter and the Thule Snug Tite Hitch Lock and Anti-rattle Devise. The lock is really good. Do not worry even it is longer than you need. It took 10minutes to get everything installed. It is so easy and convenient to use it. I wish I have obtained those products long long time ago. I can not express how gratefule I am for the fast service, fast respond and high quality of the products from etrailer.com. Thank you is not enough for my appreciation. 21770

- THSTL2

by:

The lock is very sturdy and easy to install. The locking cylinder is packaged separately and must be installed in the lock body. The instructions are simple and straight forward. The only difficulty I had was caused by my own clumsy fingers and impatients while trying to install the lock cylinder. Of course it was also after I had been working t assemble about 6 other things in a 95 degree garage. The bottom line is that if you want a way to secure watever you have in your hitch receiver, you can't go wrong with this lock. 22171

As described, this is the perfect hitch lock and anti rattle device for my Thule bike rack. After ordering it, I got a call from etrailer customer service to make sure I had ordered the right item and letting me know it would be shipped immediately after I confirmed. I have never received a proactive call from any other company after making an order to ensure I was getting exactly what I wanted. This was extraordinary and welcome and clearly differentiating service. Thank you etrailer! 202698

by:

No problem with the product. For those who have a 2 1/2" x 2 1/2", this lock will work. The design of the lock plugs in straight, giving you room to use the lock. Other locks when used creates an "L" shape when in lock position, and no room to maneuver. Why no 5 stars is for UPS shipping. I live in PA. Tracking went from MO to PA to NJ, back to PA, then NJ, finally arriving about 10 days after ordering??? I like Etrailer, and will continue to shop there. 517802

The product was great and the correct one for my bike rack on the very first order. Plus I was also trying to order another part and my salesman Anthony did a great job of customer service. He took time to send me links for my additional part. I was very happy with the product and service I received. The instructions and pictures that came with the part were also easy to understand too!!! In English. I would definitely order from Etrailer again. 309012

by:

Not sure wat to say about this. the lock arrived broken. It seems the quality of the lid is not as good as other Thule products. However, I contacted etrailer customer service and I received a new one without any problem. I read many comments about how the bolts were not steady or moved a lot, I have to say that I did not experience anything like that. I used the materials on the package and all fitted perfectly and nothing has been loose on my car. 252055

- THSTL2

by:

Being blunt, this lock works very well. Worth the investment, being you never know whose around the corner who might try to make a quick buck off of your bike hitch. This lock swivels once in the hitch, which is nice because you can unlock the lock from any angle. I purchased a master lock trailer hitch lock, and getting it in place when it is in a fixed position is a pain. A must buy for ANY Thule hitch rack. 156735

- THSTL2

by:

While this does lock the part that fits in the hitch of your car, it doesn't secure the main tower that holds the bikes. That is a separate piece that could be taken by removing a bolt. So purchasing this piece doesn't actually secure your rack on the car. You need an additional method for the whole rack to be locked on your car. I haven't looked yet but I'm sure for more money it's out there. 277429

I had been looking at racks awhile and knew what I wanted. Frankly found etrailer through a random search. You guys rock ...as usual! Seems like I just ordered this hitch lock and it is here already! Thank you for the quick turnaround. The lock went on easily and works exactly as advertised... I ordered a Thulle bike rack for my jeep liberty. I love the rack. It's easy to use and it lowers the bikes down. The only thing I have a problem with I can't open my back unless I lower the rack. I wasn't sure if it would fit my bike rack since my 932pro was no longer being made by Thule, but to my satisfaction it fits perfect. I already have an idea of what my next purchase will be. 123638

Works great and should be an automatic for anyone ordering a Thule trailer hitch. I just installed it a few days ago. Did not even tried it out on the road. The first observation is that the lock is not fitting tight but rather swinging around on the bolt body. Don't know why they called it "Snug tite", because it is not. Hope it will not be a detriment to its function. 49203

  • Best Swing Away Hitch Bike Rack Recommendation
  • My honest opinion is that the Thule Apex # TH9027 is a nicer rack with the exception of the anti-rattle device in the shank. There the Yakima FullSwing part # Y02465 has the advantage. So your best option is going to be the Thule Vertex Swing # TH9031XT with the hitch lock part # THSTL2. The Vertex is basically a stripped down version of the Apex, but since it has the older style shank that works better it would be your best option. • If you have a Thule accessory, like a bike rack, then the lock and anti-rattle device from Thule, # THSTL2, is the only one that will work. (See THSTL2 product page for the racks the lock fits.) It fits 1-1/4 and 2 inch Thule hitch mounted racks. The reason it only fits these Thule models is the way that the lock and racks are threaded. They are uniquely threaded to match each other. I have included a video and instructions for this lock below.

  • Differences Between Thule Hitching Post Pro # TH934XTR and Vertex # TH9029
  • Other than the outward appearance of the more modern-looking Vertex, there are a few other differences between the Vertex # TH9029 and the Hitching Post Pro # TH934XTR. To fold the arms down or to tilt the rack back away from the vehicle, the Hitching Post Pro uses snapper pins that need to be removed, while the Vertex uses quick release latches. Both mechanisms serve the same purpose, but the Vertex latch is easier to use. Since the Wrangler has the rear mounted spare tire, clearance...

  • Comparing the Thule Hitching Post Pro 4 Bike Rack to the Curt Premium 3 Bike Rack
  • The racks you are comparing have several things in common. They both fold for easy storage, tilt for access to the hatch, and include anti-rattle devices and anti-sway cradles. So, my recommendation will depend on how often you plan to use the rack. If you travel with your bikes very often and want a rack that will stand the test of time, I recommend spending the additional money to purchase the Thule Hitching Post Pro, # TH934XTR. One reason this rack is so popular is that Thule is...

  • Comparing the Thule Vertex and Apex 5-Bike Carriers
  • There are several differences between the Thule Apex, # TH9026 and the Vertex, # TH9030XT. Apart from appearance, the main difference is the cradles. The Apex has the top of the line cradles with road-dampening technology to better protect the bikes. Basically this cradles have more cushion and sort of act like shocks. The Vertex has traditional rubber cradles. Both racks have anti-sway features. The other major difference is the shank (the part that slides into the receiver). The Apex...

  • Thule and Yakima Swinging Hitch Bike Rack Comparison, Which is Best
  • The Yakima FullSwing 4 Bike Rack # Y02465 is basically the fully upgraded version of the Yakima Swingdaddy # Y02464 that you also referenced. It features a nicer frame cradle system that is much easier to adjust and load/unload bikes on as well as locks that lock the bikes to the rack and the rack to the hitch. On such a long road trip where the bikes would be loaded for such a long time it would be worth the peace of mind for me to know the bikes were locked to the rack as well. The...

  • Which Trailer Hitch Pin Locks Will Work with Thule Trailer Hitch Mount Bike Racks
  • The Thule Snug Tite Hitch Lock and Anti-Rattle Device, # THSTL2, is the only hitch pin lock that can be used with Thule bike racks. The racks and lock are both uniquely threaded to be compatible with each other so another lock, like the Softride Lock, # SR25219, that you have referenced will not work. I have included a link to a video review of this lock for reference. I recommend adding a cable lock, like # CAB-10, and using it through the bikes, around the rack, and attach it to the...

  • Replacement Hitch Pin for Thule Bike Rack
  • Your Thule bike rack uses a threaded hitch bolt, both for security and to hold the shank of the bike right tight up against the side of the receiver tube to prevent the bike rack from wobbling around. Because it uses a proprietary threaded bolt, you unfortunately wouldn't be able to use the Master Lock # 1470DAT lock you mentioned as the threads would prevent the hitch pin from working. If you lost the threaded hitch bolt as well as the lock itself, you'd need part # THSTL2. If you're...

  • It sounds like you are looking for hitch bolt # 853-5917. Even if you don't have the Snug Tite lock you can still use this bolt. But if you wanted to add the lock as well you could instead get # THSTL2 this is the lock, bolt, keys, washers, and a little wrench that you can use to dig through tools to find a better wrench to use to tighten the bolt. I have linked a video review for you.

  • Comparison of Thule TH9027 Apex and TH9031XT Vertex Swinging Bike Racks
  • There are a few differences between the Thule # TH9031XT Vertex and # TH9027 Apex Swinging bike racks. The Apex provides upgraded Hold Fast cradles with two layers of padding to product the bikes during transport. There's a big difference in how the racks attach to the trailer hitch receiver. The Vertex uses a traditional set up, where the shank of the bike rack would be slid into the receiver, the hitch pin inserted and tightened down to hold the rack in place and also to prevent rattling...

My recommendation is to instead use the EcoHitch Hidden Trailer Hitch Receiver 2" # 306-X7192 which is confirmed to fit. You can then use the Thule Hitching Post # TH934XTR or any of the other Thule 4 bike racks I've linked. • Since both the Softride Dura # SR26247 and Thule Vertex # TH9029XT use a threaded hitch bolt that draws the shank tightly against the side of the receiver, both bike racks will be very stable in the receiver and should not move around on you. The Dura includes a lock that attaches to the hitch bolt, while with the Vertex the lock # THSTL2 is sold separately. When overstretched, the straps on the Dura are more prone to breakage. I always tell folks to resist the temptation to tighten...

  • Trailer Hitch and Swing Away Bike Rack Recommendation for 2017 Toyota RAV4
  • For a trailer hitch for your 2017 Toyota RAV4 the best option is the Draw Tite part # 76134 for a few reasons. It has a concealed crosstube which means it won't be as visible from the rear of the vehicle, it's a 2 inch hitch size which is required for 4-bike racks, unlike the Curt option it does not require a stabilizer strap to carry a non-supported load like a bike rack and is quite a bit less expensive than the EcoHitch equivalent as well. My favorite bike rack to recommend is the...

However, in order to lock the rack to the vehicle you would also need to use part # THSTL2.
