Features to know about

Solid Extension for Better Handling: Durable Steel Build

When you're towing with confidence, knowing your setup is robust makes all the difference. The Curt Extender for 2" Hitch Receivers is built from powder-coated steel that resists rust, ensuring durability and long-lasting use. This 18-inch extension adds that much-needed clearance for trailers without compromising on strength. It fits snugly into your 2" hitch receiver, making it better suited for heavy-duty towing demands, as echoed in multiple reviews. It’s a no-nonsense, sturdy solution when you need that bit of extra reach for your tow.

Ultimate Control with Added Clearance: 18-Inch Extension

Get a full 18 inches of extra reach with this hitch extender, measured from the center of hitch pin holes. It’s exactly what you need when your standard setup just isn’t enough to get past that extended truck bed or tailgate. Whether you’re hauling a jetski, a camper, or an ATV trailer, this feature is invaluable for maintaining safe towing distances and improving your vehicle’s handling—all while ensuring your trailer stays securely in place.

Versatile Towing Solutions: Compatible with Various Accessories

Mount your bike rack, cargo carrier, or even your spare tire holder without fuss using this extender. It's the go-to accessory when space is limited, allowing you to haul additional gear effortlessly. As mentioned by thrilled customers, it can be used for camping trailers, ATVs, and much more—showcasing its utility across multiple setups and applications. This versatility means you're not just limited to trailers; anything requiring clearance from your vehicle gets the perfect assist with this extension.

Technical Peace of Mind: Thoughtful Design for Safety

The Curt Extender ensures you don’t have to compromise on safety while gaining that extra length. It features a maximum gross trailer weight of 3,500 lbs and a 350 lbs tongue weight, making it functional while ensuring stability during hauls. However, do keep in mind that using an extender reduces your hitch's overall capacity by 50%, a small trade-off many find acceptable given the benefits offered.

Effortless Setup and Usage: User-Friendly Design

With its simple installation, you can easily get this extender set up and ready for your towing needs. Designed for convenience, the extender seamlessly fits into your existing 2" hitch receiver without a hitch, literally. This user-friendly aspect means less time fussing and more time focusing on the road ahead. Whether you're a new tower or an experienced hauler, set up is a breeze.

Resilient Finish to Combat the Elements: Powder Coat Finish

A black powder coat finish not only adds to the aesthetic appeal of the Curt Extender but also offers a reliable shield against wear and tear caused by the elements. This means you can count on your extender not just for its strength but also for its resilience against the elements, ensuring it remains part of your towing kit for the long haul.

Video Transcript for Curt Hitch Extender for 2" Hitch Receivers Review

Hi, John with etrailer. If you have a vehicle that has a rear-mounted spare tire, then you know all too well that there's a lot of accessories that just don't want to work with your vehicle. Well, now they can. Today we're gonna be taking a look at the CURT line of hitch extenders. Now these come in a variety of sizes, anywhere from eight inches, 14 inches, up to 18 inches in length. Now having different size hitch extenders is gonna help you for different situations.

You know, our situation today, we have an H2 that could never have a bike rack on it from the factory, and so we use CURT's 14-inch extender. We now have a bike rack. We don't have to shove the bikes right off the trail into the back of it. We can put it on here, and this 14-inch fits the Hummer nicely. Even when the bikes are off, we can fold this up into the stowed position, something that, again, previously we couldn't do.

We've had a lot of questions for like special cases like this, or even Jeep owners, that also have rear-mounted spare tires. There's also situations with SUVs and some minivans where they have a recessed hitch, and so they're running into the same situation. Will this fit on my one vehicle It might fit on another vehicle, but you don't wanna buy two different bike racks or two different cargo racks. If you can get one nice rack or one nice carrier, and use it for both vehicles, then that's the way to go. Now, another reason for the different size hitch extenders is a situation like this, where towing would be either very difficult or nearly impossible to do without an extender.

You can see just in this instance, we're using the eight-inch extender, and that's gonna bring our hitch ball almost dead even with our spare tire. So getting the jack up and down, hooking up, all of that stuff is gonna be much, much easier. One thing to keep in mind when you are looking at hitch extenders is with your safety chains, realize that you're pushing your trailer however many inches back, depending on the extender size. So you may need to lengthen your safety chains to be able to make sharp turns and such. So we're back in the shop, and we've got the three solid shake options laid out for you here.

Now let's talk about some of the weight capacities, and how this could affect your towing performance. Each of these is rated at 3,500 pounds gross trailer weight rating, and 350 pounds maximum tongue weight rating. Now, the one thing you need to keep in mind when using hitch extenders is that if there's anything under 12 inches, such as our eight-inch extender here, then this is gonna reduce your tongue weight rating on your hitch by 25%, just because of the mechanical advantage and the leverage that we're putting on the hitch. Anything over 12 inches, such as the 14 and 18 here, this is gonna reduce your tongue weight rating on your hitch by 50%. Also, how does this affect your gross trailer weight rating Even if your hitch is rated at five or six or 7,000 pounds, we have to abide by the lowest number. And on these hitch extenders, that lowest number is gonna be 3,500 pounds. Now, a few options you may wanna pick up with your extender is an extra pin and clip. Since you're gonna have an additional piece of equipment back there, you'll need an additional pin and clip. These are gonna take your five-eights inch pin and clip, probably recommend possibly a locking one. We have those here at etrailer. Also, there's gonna be an anti-rattle clamp that may do you some good. These sometimes tend to be a little sloppy, once you start hooking up equipment back there, and you're gonna get some noise and possibly vibration out of it. The anti-rattle clamp is going to eliminate a lot of that movement, and just make for a nicer ride. So how do you know which hitch extender is gonna be right for your particular situation Well, CURT measures these extenders from pinhole to pinhole. So for instance, this eight-inch is gonna read eight inches from the center of the pinhole to the center of the other pinhole, and so on and so forth. So it puts a 14 and the 18. So for instance, when we hook the camper up to the H2 here, we measured from the center of the pinhole on our factory hitch, and by the time we added the extender and our drop ball mount, it put us exactly where we wanted, which was out at the edge of the spare tire here. So in the end, no matter which hitch extender you choose to alleviate your situation, I just don't think you're gonna go wrong. Whether it comes down to the welds, the powder coat finish, or the reinforced collar, I think CURT's quality is second to none. One thing is that these shanks on here, on all three of them, they're solid steel. This is something that's just gonna last, and it's gonna be a great addition to your towing equipment. So that's gonna complete our look at CURT's line of hitch extenders.

I got this hitch extender to put on my camper so that I could mount my bike rack. It worked like a charm!! The bike rack and bike were super solid on the trip cross country!!

Came as described, did what i wanted it to do which was extend my Dirt bike rack out past my tailgate, so i could some Hooligan/ neck breaking [stuff]. Really solid well built part though durable, worked well have no complaints or isses with the product.

Purchased to use on my 2020 Yamaha Drive 2 golf cart hitch. I ordered this and an 18” receiver extension. When I placed my online order I received a phone call the next morning asking if was aware that the extension and the receiver hitch were different sizes and would not work together. I was very grateful for the call as I had not realized I had ordered items that would not fit together. Great Customer Service!!!

by:

Ordered on a Saturday afternoon and received on Wednesday morning. It doesn't get much better than that. No more bending under the rack to hook up a trailer.
Thanks Etrailer

It’s a quality product and I highly recommend it if you need an extension on your ATV.

by:

Very well made, the male end is solid 2”x2” steel and the female end has a steel band around the end for increased strength. Nice hard baked on finish as well, it arrived with the box damaged, but the 18 inch hitch extension didn’t have a scratch on it. I deducted one star because it is not made in the USA.

by:

My truck bed camper is so easy to access with the hitch stair and extender. Having them has finished my project off perfectly. Thanks.

by:

This product work perfectly. Very strong material, it will not bend under a load. I use it to extend out from under my UTV to attach the salt spreader.

by:

E trailer customer service and employees are the best. Also, the selection of products was very impressive.

by:

Works great. Gives me the space I need to swing my Jeep's tail gate open further so I can access the rear cargo area. One thing that would make it a five star would be safety chain rings welded on so I didn't have to buy more chain to extend the already very long chains all the way to the bumper, which leads to a lot of chain dragging on tighter turns.

Keep in mind that using an extender such as this will lower the capacity of the hitch both towing and tongue weight capacity by half.

Going fishing and hunting will be much easier now. Now I can get in the bed of my truck & get things out easy. I have a brand new truck & didn't want to scratch up the tailgate. Also shipped very fast. Thanks

Needed this item to be able to tow my boat behind my pick-up with 9 foot camper.
Had put off towing because I thought I needed a very long extension bar coupled with a weight distribution system...which would not be compatible with my trailer anyways. So I gave up on the idea of towing with it, leaving the boat behind on trips for over ten years. That all changed when I perused the etrailer web site for solutions. Found the solution with the Curt 18" extension bar and the Roadmaster Quiet Hitch (RM-061). With a 12 inch ball mount on the end, and securing both with a pair of Roadmaster Hitch Quieters, it turned out to be perfect. I can move forward and turn either direction just past 45 degrees with out danger of a jack-knife event. My boat/motor/trailer weighs about 1,300 lbs, so I was well within the reduced weight limits imposed by using an 18" extension bar with the class III hitch. The Hitch Quieters were like "icing on the cake," eliminating 3/8" of horizontal and especially vertical "slop" and associated noise. The boat can go with me all the time now.

Just great! I tow without a worry. The set up quite often becomes the topic of conversation at the boat ramp when others see it.

by:

Exactly as advertised.

by:

Rock solid, heavy-weight, and inspires confidence. I ordered two and linked them together because I couldn't find something longer without spending a lot more and a complicated install. I had a simple problem to solve - a deep keel 22 foot sailboat at a boat ramp and I needed another few feet of tongue length to keep my tailpipe out of the water. I stop at the top of the ramp, hook up the two lengths, and I have just enough distance to keep the pipe out of the water. Of course I remove the extenders for any travel over the road. The two pieces together are very easy to handle as components and the price was much lower here than other vendors. And, did I mention that I ordered early one morning and in a different time zone and George J had it out the door in under 2.5 hours. I figure he processed my order right after he got to work and before he went to the coffee maker. Thanks George.

Thanks for asking, I’m very satisfied with it but don’t use my extension apparatus all that much. It was for my boat trailer and I had to deal with a ramp situation that had me concerned. It solved the problem and I keep it stored safely away for the next time. I only trailer once or twice a season and sometimes not at all as we have the boat at a slip. But, if a hurricane is coming and there is a need to pull it quickly the extension will make all the difference in the world. Thanks again.

Great products arrived super fast, super quality, I'll send a picture when I get them installed. My gate was closed, I hand carried the package down 400 ft. of driveway. Now I'm resting, good quality weighs a bit. Thanks a million.

by:

The Curt 18 inch extender arrived on time especially for this time of the year. It is seriously heavy duty, well constructed. It will be used on my Gator for towing a log splitter, will save my back big time for those familiar with the rear hitch receiver location on a Gator. I am sure I will find other uses for it on my P/U or MH. Great product at a fair price and shipped for free. How good is that?

The extender is working out great, I have used it many times, I like it even better after each use. Fantastic product and company to deal with.

by:

Received my 18" extender for my 2" receiver in 3 days. It's going to work perfectly, enabling me to haul bikes with the Thule spare me bike rack at the same time as cargo on a luggage rack at the end of the 18" extender on my Jeep Wrangler. Product is super heavy, therefore, super durable.

by:

I bought this extender after a lot of looking around, this one does the trick!!! It is SOLID Square, not heavy wall tube, the only thing that might hurt this is a Atomic Bomb!!!!! I plan to tow my boat behind my truck with the tail gate down because the camper is 8', and my truck bed is 6'2", the 18" model was exactly what I needed. Shipping was fast, the whole buying experience was PAINLESS, will order from these folks without worry!!

by:

First off, I love Curt products. When I found this item at Etrailer at this low price I was shocked. I was prepared to receive a knock off. I tried my luck and was amazed the product not only showed up at my doorstep the next day but is a very high quality Curt product. My handyman was working on the house and he couldn’t believe the quality at that price. Thanks Etrailer! You are my new go to for my traveling needs.

by:

I haven't used it yet, but it fits fine on my 2017 Nissan Frontier. It appears to be solid and has a great finish. I'm excited that I can now pull my scooter/motorcycle trailer with my tailgate down allowing for more cargo and camping gear in the bed.

Potential buyers should keep in mind that you will likely need longer chains and a lighting wire extension for your trailer.

Everything was top notch with this purchase. Juanita T. was an excellent and helpful CSR and the product was exactly what I expected. The delivery schedule was spot on per Juanita. Kudos

By the way I had previously tried to purchase this product elsewhere and I was strung along for three months.

The extender is very well constructed and fits well in the receiver. Works for me.

Thanks

It depends up on the loaded weight of the trailer and the capacity if the hitch. The extension reduces your hitch capacity by 50%, when you calculate that figure, compare it to the 350/3,500 pound capacity figure of the extension and abide by which ever is less. There should be an ID plate on the camper that list the GVWR or Gross Vehicle Weight Rating. The trailer when fully loaded should weigh no more than the GVWR. To determine the weight of the trailer, you can either add the weight of all the items you put in it to the dry weight on the trailer ID plate or you can take it to a scale at a large fuel station and weigh it.

To carry your Honda EU3200i generator the only option is a hitch-mounted carrier from TorkLift: - 24x27 TorkLift Lock and Load Maximum Security Cargo Tray for 2" Hitches # TLA7752 The # TLA7752 has inside tray dimensions of 27-3/4" long x 24" wide x 5-1/2" deep and you can either mount it on a front hitch of your truck if you have one, or use an extension like the Extender for 2" Hitch Receivers -18" Long # C45796.

  • Extending a 2 Inch Trailer Hitch 30 Inches to Clear In-Bed Camper when Towing a Boat Trailer
For a regular extension that fits a 2 inch trailer hitch receiver the longest available is going to be 18 inches such as # C45796. In order to reach at least 30 inches you would then need to use a ball mount that measures at least 12 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the center of the ball hole. But I do not know how much rise or drop you need to tow the trailer level. So what I did was include a link to the fixed ball mounts that would be long enough, as well as a link...

  • Option to Increase Turning Radius of Trailer Towing Setup Without Losing Weight Capacity
Hitch extenders can add enough length to give a better turning radius but the problem is that they cut the tongue weight capacity of the hitch by 50 percent. So your best option would be to go with a longer ball mount to gain the extra clearance without sacrificing capacity. For example we have the Brophy Ball Mount part # BM20 which is 13-1/4 inches in length and has the same 6,000 lb capacity as your vehicle. I attached a review video for this for more info as well.

  • Safety Chain Configuration When Using Hitch Extender to Tow Trailer
When using an 18 inch long hitch extender like the Curt # C45796 you can certainly use two sets of chains like you mentioned, one set from the truck to the extender's receiver and one from the receiver to the trailer. Technically only the chains from the receiver to the boat trailer would need to be crossed to create that cradle for the coupler in the event that it becomes unattached. If you'd rather not weld on D rings to the extender you can also just use one set of longer chains from...

  • Is a Hitch Extender Safe to Tow a Camper With
It is safe to tow with a hitch extender like the Curt # C45796, but it is important to note that using any type of adapter, including an extender, reduces the weight capacity of your hitch by 50 percent.

  • Using Extra-Long Ball Mount vs. Hitch Extension When Towing with Jeep That Has Rear Spare Tire
When towing with a vehicle like your 2013 Jeep Wrangler that has a rear-door-mounted spare tire you will probably need either a hitch extension like the Curt # C45796 that you referenced, OR you may be able to use an extra-long ball mount, which is actually a preferable solution. There are a few advantages to using a long ball mount versus a separate hitch extension like # C45796. The first is towing capacity. Extensions cause a 50-percent loss in hitch weight capacity. The other advantage...

  • Recommended Hitch Extender to Clear Truck Camper on 2016 Ram 2500
The dual tube TorkLift extenders that you mentioned do offer a longer extension but they are designed specifically for dual receiver trailer hitches from TorkLift like # TLC1204. Unfortunately there is not one currently available for your 2016 Ram 2500 so your only option will be with a standard single tube extender. The longest standard extender we have available is an 18 inch long unit like the Curt # C45796. This inserts into a 2 inch receiver like what you already have on your truck...

  • Can the Curt Combo Bar C49360 Be Used as an Extender?
The Curt Combo Bar # C49360 is generally used as a weld on receiver for custom applications on trailers, RVs, or service vehicles. I spoke with Curt and they have not tested the # C49360 as an extender, so they couldn't give me any specifications as to capacity as an extender. With that being said, I cannot recommend using it as an extender. The Curt Hitch Extension and Reducer for 2-1/2" Trailer Hitches # C45048 may be a better option. This arrives at 34 inches long, but can also be trimmed...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch Extender for use with Cirrus 820 Camper on 2016 Ram 2500
We do offer many trailer hitch adapters that will extend the hitch receiver on your 2016 Ram 2500. The particular product you need will depend on how far out the hitch needs to be extended to clear your Cirrus 820 Camper, and the amount of weight you plan on towing with the small trailer or carrying with a hitch-mounted rack. You can take a measurement from the center of the hitch pin hole on your trailer hitch to the outermost edge of the camper to see what kind of clearance you will need....

  • Hitch Extension for Use With Truck Camper
By extension that "uses chains to the corners of my truck hitch" I assume you are talking about an extender such as the TorkLift SuperTruss Hitch Extension # TLE1521 which attaches like in the accompanying photo. The SuperTruss extenders that use chains are only fits for TorkLift SuperHitch dual-receiver trailer hitches so these would only fit if you had one of those on your truck. As for 18" hitch extenders such as the Curt # C45796, there are none we carry which use chains that attach...
