Video Transcript for Curt Receiver Hitch Extender Review

Randy: Hey guys. It's Randy here at etrailer.com. Today we're taking a look at Curt hitch extenders. These are designed for use in a two inch by two inch receiver tube opening and they're going to in an 8, a 14, and an 18 inch length. This is going to be a really good way with obstructions on the back of your vehicle whether it's a Jeep like this with a spare tire, a truck with an in-bed camper or even a UTV hitch that's just buried underneath and hard to get to.This is going to get our pinwheel much further back allowing us to clear any obstructions that we might have their accessories. Here is one of the many situations where a hitch extender is going to come in handy.

As you can see we've got a folding style bike rack back here. We just can't get it in far enough before it makes contact with the tire. So by buying that 8, that 14, or that 18 inch extension it's going to give us the room to get our items in place without any interference. Now something that sets this extender apart from some others you can see and extremely durable, solid shank here goes into the backside of your receiver tube. That's going to give you supreme durability. It's going to be very, very rugged, actually quite heavy.

To secure it we're going to slide it in our receiver tube opening. We want to line up the pin hole in the extender with the pin hole in our hitch. Once that's in place use a standard 5/8th diameter pin to slide through there and get it secured with our clip. Now you can also use anti-rattle devices with this but keep in mind, since it is a solid shank we can't put anything inside we we'll have to use an external type. Now the pin's going to be a standard Class 3 style pin, 5/8th of an inch in diameter. So if you don't already have one of those at home be sure to pick it up.

It's not included with the extender. Now overall this going to be a very heavy-duty extender. It feels heavier than just about any of the other ones that we've dealt with. Now this is a two inch by two inch receiver tube opening. That's going to be very compatible with a lot of accessories out here. This would be like what they consider would be like a Class 3 size.

Pin hole here on the side is going to be 5/8th of an inch in diameter and just like a receiver tube opening on a hitch. So any anti-rattle devices and things like that, you won't have any issues getting those in place. Now for ball mount use, I don't know that those are very important. You're going to have a little bit of movement with a ball mount anyway. But putting cargo carriers in here, putting bike racks in here, I would definitely want an anti-rattle there just to keep everything nice and solid. Now here's a pretty good example of what we we're talking about with the movement that we have at our connection between the extender and the hitch. As you can see with this bike rack on here going down the road it'd have quite a bit of play. So we recommend the use of an anti-rattle device here at our connection point so we can limit that and keep everything nice and sturdy. I don't think it's as big of a deal when towing but it's something to keep in mind. Any hitch extender without an anti-rattle device is going to give you that same movement. These extenders also get really good reviews from our customers. It's like Billy said, "I have a Jeep Wrangler with a spare tire on the back. Because of that, I needed this product in order to use a cargo basket so that the basket will clear the spare tire. This product fits the bill and it is very sturdy. Now when using this hitch extender we're going to have the 350 pound tongue weight maximum. That's the most downward force we can put on it. We going to have a 3500 pound gross trailer weight rating so it would be the total weight or our trailer and anything that we load up on it.We also need to check our hitch for it's capacity. Take that down by 50% and use whichever of those numbers are lowest. Also to help ensure that this is going to look good and last for a very long time, Curt's put their black powder coat finish all around everything, giving it a nice clean look.

Rock solid, heavy-weight, and inspires confidence. I ordered two and linked them together because I couldn't find something longer without spending a lot more and a complicated install. I had a simple problem to solve - a deep keel 22 foot sailboat at a boat ramp and I needed another few feet of tongue length to keep my tailpipe out of the water. I stop at the top of the ramp, hook up the two lengths, and I have just enough distance to keep the pipe out of the water. Of course I remove the extenders for any travel over the road. The two pieces together are very easy to handle as components and the price was much lower here than other vendors. And, did I mention that I ordered early one morning and in a different time zone and George J had it out the door in under 2.5 hours. I figure he processed my order right after he got to work and before he went to the coffee maker. Thanks George. 395167

Thanks for asking, I’m very satisfied with it but don’t use my extension apparatus all that much. It was for my boat trailer and I had to deal with a ramp situation that had me concerned. It solved the problem and I keep it stored safely away for the next time. I only trailer once or twice a season and sometimes not at all as we have the boat at a slip. But, if a hurricane is coming and there is a need to pull it quickly the extension will make all the difference in the world. Thanks again.

I haven't used it yet, but it fits fine on my 2017 Nissan Frontier. It appears to be solid and has a great finish. I'm excited that I can now pull my scooter/motorcycle trailer with my tailgate down allowing for more cargo and camping gear in the bed. Potential buyers should keep in mind that you will likely need longer chains and a lighting wire extension for your trailer. 512088

Purchased to use on my 2020 Yamaha Drive 2 golf cart hitch. I ordered this and an 18” receiver extension. When I placed my online order I received a phone call the next morning asking if was aware that the extension and the receiver hitch were different sizes and would not work together. I was very grateful for the call as I had not realized I had ordered items that would not fit together. Great Customer Service!!! 797937

  • 36 Inch Hitch Extender for a 2 Inch Trailer Hitch Receiver on a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500
I do have options for you but you cannot install two of part # C45796 together to get a total of 36". Doing so would completely diminish your trailer hitches weight capacity. The most cost effective solution I have for you would be to use part # RP45292 for 24"-34" or part # RP45018 for 41"-48". However, both of these options will require a 2-1/2" trailer hitch receiver like the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # C15860. The best solution I have for you to get a 36" hitch extension...

  • Availability of Extra-Long Ball Mount and Hitch Extension for 2-Inch Hitches
Hitch extenders such as the Curt 18-inch model # C45796 and the others shown on the linked page can give you more space between vehicle and trailer but they do so at the cost of reducing your hitch's capacity by half. This is true for virtually all such adapters. There are longer extensions that do not reduce capacity but these extenders such as the 4-foot TorkLift SuperTruss Hitch Extension # TLE1548 require that your tow vehicle have their specialized dual-receiver SuperHitch. • Using Extra-Long Ball Mount vs. Hitch Extension When Towing with Jeep That Has Rear Spare Tire
When towing with a vehicle like your 2013 Jeep Wrangler that has a rear-door-mounted spare tire you will probably need either a hitch extension like the Curt # C45796 that you referenced, OR you may be able to use an extra-long ball mount, which is actually a preferable solution. There are a few advantages to using a long ball mount versus a separate hitch extension like # C45796. The first is towing capacity. Extensions cause a 50-percent loss in hitch weight capacity. The other advantage...

  • Recommended Hitch Extension for Flat towing Jeep Grand Cherokee
I have an option for you, but I'm afraid the Curt Extender for 2" Receivers -18" Long, part # C45796 won't work for your application. It has a capacity of 3,500 lbs, and from what I found, your Jeep Grand Cherokee exceeds that. If a 12" extension is enough for what you need, your best option, with a 10,000 lb capacity, is the Bue Ox Hitch Extender # BX88264. This is the longest extension with the highest capacity we have available for a 2" receiver. Otherwise, please let me know the...

We do offer many trailer hitch adapters that will extend the hitch receiver on your 2016 Ram 2500. The particular product you need will depend on how far out the hitch needs to be extended to clear your Cirrus 820 Camper, and the amount of weight you plan on towing with the small trailer or carrying with a hitch-mounted rack. You can take a measurement from the center of the hitch pin hole on your trailer hitch to the outermost edge of the camper to see what kind of clearance you will need....

The longest hitch extender that is available for the Class IV 2 inch hitch on your 2008 Dodge Ram 3500 is going to be an 18 inch like part # C45796. Please keep in mind that using a hitch extension is going to reduce your hitch's overall capacity by 50 percent. For a 24 inch extension your Ram would have to be equipped with a Torklift Hitch, # TLD1102-30 for Ram with factory hitch or # TLD1101 for Ram without factory hitch. For a 2 inch hitch like what you'd have on your Chevy Silverado 1500 we have an 18 inch long hitch extender part # C45796 which would be a decent option. But you should note that with hitch extenders like this you end up cutting the capacity of the hitch in half due to the increased leverage so you'll need to keep that in mind and be sure not to exceed half of the capacity of your trailer hitch.

  • Option to Increase Turning Radius of Trailer Towing Setup Without Losing Weight Capacity
Hitch extenders can add enough length to give a better turning radius but the problem is that they cut the tongue weight capacity of the hitch by 50 percent.
